  • I DID A FIRE (thom hanks) " cast away" like lol

  • How fucking G was that!

  • b for blowjob

    thumbs up if you misread

  • ASSUME THE POSITION

  • My teacher, a firecrafter, can pop a spark in 6 seconds

  • @jmiersmasexy apply a whole lot of pressure and only use dead wood. harder wood for the spindle, softer wood for the base board.

  • uhm.. is that knife REALLY sharp, or is that wood really soft? because you cut trough it like butter at 2:30 :O

  • @lhtrf a bit of both really. the base board needs to be a really soft wood, and the knife blade appears to be Scandinavian edge grind (perfect for wood cutting). a third thing that could of contributed to this is him pressing really hard :)

  • So, if I understand this correctly, you should use a hardwood drill and a softwood hearth, right? Nice video and well-presented... thanks.

  • @Raksaht yup

  • @jmiersmasexy it doesn't take long to get COAL. but it takes a few days to get a COIL.

  • he always sounds nervous

  • @justyoustupid What? He seems pretty mellow to me.

  • @sonofursus his voice quivers

  • CONGRATULATIONS your vidéo is really great !!!!!

  • what are some other good woods to use?

  • Fun! Fun! Fun! I like dry cyprus wood for board and spindle.

  • What would be the best type of wood to use in the tropics?

  • A wild Andrew appeared!

Wild Andrew used smokescreen at 3:34!

you are blinded by the smoke!

  • that could be a smoke bomb

  • Plantain leaves for a coal catch?

  • @iceshark55555 what kind of wood are you using?what problems are you having?

  • I think I saw this guy on a show called Snowdonia 1890 :)

  • Nice :o I thought it would take an hour or something :P

  • b for boobies

  • What kind of knife is that, and where did you get it?

  • Question. Do the combustion points of the wood have to match up good? Say the point of combustion of the base piece as oppose to the combustion point of the drill? Should one be of higher or lower points?

  • Guy and Girls get the DVD it's much better. You won't regret it I promice you.

  • its very good

  • I did that over the weekend and I'm only 12!!! :) :) :)

  • What kind of wood would you use if you couldn't find ivy? Ceder?

  • did you get your knife of an online store ? if so please reply 5*

  • looks so easy but its not

  • @kobbio22 toatly

  • the man looks like hamster from top gear

  • ivy hearth and hazel drill are the best combo imo sycamore works well but wears really fast

  • Can you use animal tendons if there's no available string?

  • lol

  • You could use sinew yes.

  • you dont need this when you have a zipo!!

i am kidding this is a primitive way but its a good way to know !!

ive try it its too hard

  • 3:20 smoke grenade!

  • siberia do it so--- It is necessary to put a dry grass at once.

Then where you saw ready apertures in wood in a tree.

You still sale of ready holes make in a tree.

    Americans will buy =))

  • fuck this is hard ive tryed it

  • Anyone know if your shoe laces will work?

  • as long as they're strong

  • Shoe laces work great.

  • Ok, ty.

I only ask is because anytime I see Less Stroud or Bear Grylls they never use shoe laces, it's always an elastic thing from their bag or underwear or something.

  • why shouldn't it?

as long as its durable enough.

  • Glorious! I've got an ember using willow in 46 secs, thats my record :)

  • He did it less than twenty seconds? Good god what am I doing wrong?

  • just practice more :D

  • @woody1time i hear ya. i give up in less than 20 seconds!LOL

  • @woody1time Lot of people don't use enough weight pushing the spindle into the hearth. Just a guess

  • @woody1time maybe you are using a wrong wood. try a dryer one. good luck and greetings from portugal

  • @woody1time

I have seen people do it in 7 seconds:D

It needs a lot of practice

  • @woody1time Materials and form are key elements. Using non resinous softer woods for the spindle & fireboard are helpful. Keeping your upper torso above your spindle and using the whole length of your bow are aos important. What color is the dust you are generating and what type of wood are you using?

  • @woody1time could be the type of wood your using

  • The Masai tribe in Kenya and in fact most tribes don`t use the bow at all. they just use their hands. The bow just makes it easier.

  • You can get an ember quicker using the hand drill method in those temperate, arid climates!

  • I saw that! Hardcore stuff :D

  • does it have to be those woods?

  • No, as long as it's dry.

  • a question to your question.....does all wood burn?

  • ..yeah, pretty sure

  • well gee i wonder how that could help you with your question

  • everything burns haha

  • some people are just plain retarded

  • cheers

  • ok so is the harth harder then the spindle or vice verca

also i used a gerrn stick and it was to tight so shoud i use a dead stick for the bow

  • 3:36 = Boom, Fire!

  • Very few plant cordages can take abrasion, they are strong enough but fray quickly. Raw hide is a good fire bow stringing material.

  • are you speaking from experience or speculation? If this is true I wonder why there have been bow drill used for centuries before nylon chord. There are photos of bows that used yucca fiber cordage. It also depends on your technique as well.

  • I Agree Voice of Reason

  • I wonder why people complain about him using man made cordage. If you are serious about bushcraft, you should assume that eventually you will be completely adept at making your own natural cordage. But I guess most of the people complaining are the same arm chair survivalists that think Bear Grylls is cool...

  • epic win right there...

  • WAYYY harder than he made it look it takes so much work and effort in real life go try it its not easy

  • its that easy.. with wood thats dry and not something you just got out of the bush.. wood has to be very dry or you will be going at it like mad till the wood drys then wants to light

  • i dont care if its been sitting around for years if you dont know what your doing and havnt practiced it for a very long time the best you will get is smoke

  • the hardest part is learning how to use the bow and drill smoothly. after you master that, it gets much easier

  • I know iv done it before, im just saying its still not all that easy especially here in michigan where the woods always damp most of the time

  • its actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. It's almost too easy once you get it. The hand drill is way cooler.

  • You could also just use your boot lace.

  • That's really useful. Thank you for sharing :)

  • Sweet! Thanks for sharing!

  • What are some of the uses for Holly wood and what makes it better than others for a particular uses?

  • would weeping willow work?

  • better to use same wood for both drill and hearth, the set lasts longer

  • does it matter what type of wood to use for the construction of bow and fire board??thanx

  • try willow on willow

  • any other wood besides willow...thats on the video here is what i mean. ya know oak, hickery, ash. maple,ceder,spruce,redwood,........

  • yes mate red and yellow ceder sycomore cristmas trees as a starter try hazle on sycomor or sycomore on sycomore but it hard to learn just remember keep your wrist tight into your leg

  • Where are ya gonna find these items out in the wilderness? You gotta be able to make a fire without a knife, piece of cord and milled timber.

  • use sharp rock to edge out the wood, your shoelace for cord and scrap bark of a tree for tinder

  • Very simple, actually. You don't.

You go into the wild, you go prepared, if you don't a knife it was your own fault.

  • dude that makes no sense at all....

  • I was responding to Johnnycake.

It makes perfect sense if you read the correct comment...

  • oh... ok that makes sense

  • look! what's you created.. you!!! made a fire!!

  • I was at a camp, and just for fun I decided to try this. I didn't know about the notch though, and ended up just working at nothing for about five hours.

  • 5 Star video I find one thing missing in most fire making videos. A simple statement that you should have EVERYTHING you need to start and sustain a fire before you start. I am a chef and this practice is called Mise en place in culinary circles. Every raw material and tool required for a task at hand in an organized fashion before you start. this practice will always increase your rate of success in any project.

Who does the opening song? I love it. I'd like a copy.

  • It is funny how many people will from the comfort of a sofa say how they will just rub sticks together if they ever were in that situation. Let me tell you, I was out at my cousin's camp last week, and for laughs I sat there TRYING to just rub sticks and I ended up with wood that got sort of hot, and tired arms. If you ever try a friction method, you better try to one with the least arm work possible. Trust me!

  • The very BEST thing is that 1 kind of lighter where you shave bits of magnesium , then you use a sparker to ignite it!

    Whoa!

HOWEVER, it will be good to know how to start fires in OTHER ways in the decades to come!

    Trust that!

  • i can never get this right

    ill keep trying tho

  • its damn easy when you know how.

  • kinda surprised he didn't mention using your bootlaces as the bowstring.

    whatever

    very cool

  • depends on the bootlace. some will never hold up to this kind of abuse.

  • search for a site called "m40 selections"

the guy who runs it has some awesome knowledge of bush craft. one of the things he mentions is whenever you get a new pair of boots you switch out the laces for high test paracord. stronger that any boot lace.

check out the site! its really great.

  • i think once your technique gets very good you can get maybe a few coals. but then you have no lace haha. i guess its best to also master making strong plant cordage

  • hes got a sharp knife, it cut through that wood like butter!

  • its so cool i will go to forest and try it my self

  • Three words: THAT WAS BRILLIANT! Dave watson from woodland survival crafts is very good at this 2 and the hand drill, everyone must go 2 the wilderness gathering!

  • carry a lighter, a magnesium fire starter, AND a magnifying glass.

im not putting this method down, its great to know it in the event you loose all of your other methods, but save energy and time by carrying multiple easier methods.

  • guiltybystander77----NEVER underestimate the power of the lens of reading glasses, even the cheap ones bought at a drug store.

    Talk about start a fire.

  • i don't underestimate it.

carrying multiple methods is just smarter though...use the glass when its sunny, the flint when its not, and the lighter when its an emergency.

  • Seven little sisters is the band

  • survival rocks!1

  • whats the name of the song in the beginning?

    its very nice

  • Too bad I never see someone making the bow from scratch. :o(

  • look up cody lundin on youtube. the bow can be almost anything. or look for a ray mears clip, he shows how to make one

  • At least this guy doesn't have to fake it. Bear Grilles is a fraud.

  • hazza to that

  • do you mean huzzah?

  • Bear Grylles tries to put himself in the worst position possible to try to show you what to do if that happened. Im personally a Les Stroud fan, but Bear Grylles is alright.

  • doesnt matter if he is, stil showin u what to do

  • survival trivia checkout my channel changes weekly

  • i love these videos! i wish you would make a long 2 or 3 hour dicumentary of hands on things. like go into the woods for a few days with just a pocket knife and put all this stuff to the test. ide buy that video for sure :)

  • We would love to make a longt er one but we do all this with zero budget..we are hoping someone will like it enough to pay us to make a longer feature.

  • @undercurrentspaulo why is it that not one person out of 20 or so videos shows how to wrap the string around the spindle so it don't slip?. Every time i do it my string slips and i have it tight. I cannot even get it to turn but a few times..very frustrating. I need instruction on the bow string to the spindle to make it turn.

  • @BestFreeWow

you might want to make sure your spindle is not so smooth as to let the rope slip... rough it up a bit or possibly carve some edges into it (like a pencil)

  • Thanks for that!
