You can use either shichi or nana when counting '1 2 3 4...'. There are some exceptions when you should use nana or shichi and you can't use those names when refering to how many 'objects' there are (think hitotsu, futatsu, etc).

Well I guess I have a couple of advantages, I live in Japan and my wife is Japanese but I started studying 3 months before coming to Japan by seeking out Japanese people through language exchange, reading beginner Japanese text books and listening to Japanese conversation on CD in my car and on my walkman frequently. Oh and I used some Japanese computer learning software in the library for an hour a day. I learnt a fair bit in 3 months and anyone can do it. :)
