  • You always hear that the diesel is on there for backup and power for lights for the passenger cars, but what about older mainline steam excursions back a couple of decades ago, like the C&O Chessie Steam Special excursion, and even a slightly more recent Frisco 1522 excursion in 1993, when they were running them with steam only? It hasn't been that long. It didn't seem to be a problem then, why is it all of a sudden an issue now where they need the diesel? I don't get it.

  • Sure do miss her.

  • It seems whenever there's a special train with an old steam engine, they always ruin it with a desiel engine.

  • this is due to the fact that the railroads want to avoid reviene loss if the steamer breaks down

  • Yeah, I guess that's a good reason

  • Just to let you know that Deisel engine is perviding backup power and power for the lights on the train for the passenger cars. It is also part of the inshurance that the steam programs have to fallow in order to run on the mainline. I know because I am part of the Milwaukee Road 261 crew.

  • Insurance/backup & if the excursion is run under Amtrak, then HEP for the passenger cars.

  • Yes! More footage of my favorite engine! Whoopee!
