32 rear-engined cars and one front-engined car started this race. The initial crash took out the only front-engined racer. No front-engined cars started in 1967. 1968 was the last year a front-engined car started at Indy.
Jim clark was a legend what a save when he spun the car but recovered still in the lead!! Then of course Graham Hill winning he may have been an Indy rookie but was one of the best F1 drivers at the time. I'd love it if the Indy 500 still counted towards the Formula one world championship would love to see some of today's F1 stars take on Indys best!
One of the best kept secrets ( for A while ) in auto racing is that Jimmy Clark actually won this race. It was later revealed that an error in USAC's timing and scoring had credited one of his laps to his team mate who was driving a car in identical livery, when he was actually a full lap ahead of Graham Hill and the rest of the field.
There have been disputes the scoring of Jim Clark in this race. Some say that he was not credited with one lap, while others say that he was credited with one lap too many. Part of the problem was that Clark spun out twice and Graham Hill, who had been lapped, made up his lap on Clark's first spin. Because of Clark's two spins and an extra pit stop he took as a result, there are even those that claim that Clark was credited with a lap that teammate Al Unser completed.
@MrMogwa Where do you get this info from? I can't find ANY info about this ANYWHERE. The two cars are different colors (Hills is white, Clark's is red with white walls tires too) Clark spun twice and there were only seven cars that finished the race....very hard to believe.
Th diffrence in the cars in just that 2 year period between the 64 indy 500 and the 66 is amazing, all the cars looked so old fashioned in 64 they look the same as f1 cars from the 40's and 50's, but in just that 2 years they has all cottoned on to rear engine designs.
that 11 car crash right after the green flag made it easy for graham hill to win the race the only competition that hill had was jimmy clark and he finished 2nd and by the graham hill became the 2nd rookie to win the 500 the 1st rookie to accomplish that feat was george souders in 1927
