Bruce is not this harsh in life he is very compassionate of his subjects, and photography with an amazing amount of respect
towards people. He is a master with a 28mm and a 285!. Look at his work on the loss of housing in America that will make you cry out in anger against our society ! His take on the change of NY is somewhat sad the city is changing, keep kicking ass Bruce!! Miah
i agree with the majority here who consider his approach to be both brash and invasive. perhaps he is a celebrated photographer but after watching this i can almost get a sense his arrogance by the look of the facial expressions of his subjects. nice images, poor attitude
Hes arrogant, invasive and rude, I say so what. That's how he is.
Since when was there a clear cut set of rules on street photography. The mans work is fantastic. Some people are discreet, He's not. He's taken a whole different approach.
Yes I would punch him too, But you have to admire his work ethic. Not many people would do this. His images might look lousy, but the reaction he gets from people are completely different from other street photographers.
If he's trying to capture the body language of people reacting to an inconsiderate arse hole that jumps in front of their face and takes a picture without their permission, then he is a genius. And hats off to him to having "no ethics", as it's essential for the type of work he does.
But in my opinion his approach is not one that should be celebrated, and neither are his pictures. They're just not that good.
wish i had a tenth of the balls he's got! i'm too chicken to get close like that and take photos of people. although i'm not a fan of his technique, it's his way, then so be it.
i just wish i was able to get so close and be confident to take photos of people like that.
lol @ the part where he told the men to stop smiling but then still took the shot.

p.s if street photography offends you dont click on the link, what do all you haters expect street photography to consist of ? juggling acts or some other cool but bullshit subject !
I imagine his crass style has gotten him into a few altercations. Just look at the photos... those aren't natural looks he's photographing, it's people's reaction to an odd man lunging towards them.
He lunges so quick that you don't know if he's holding a camera or a weapon.
If someone lunged at me like that my first reaction would be to punch him in the face (and I'm a nice guy).
Street photography is supposed to capture candid moments, not create them with negativity and fear.
He actually tells people what to do, too?
I would not have sympathy for him if someone knocked him flat on the ground for invading their space and verbally treating them like some cheap hooker/model.
1. don't compare a hooker to a model. they are NOT cheap you fuckhead.
2. who cares if he's invasive.
he's only invading a persons walking privacy. which is just a small amount.. it's his style
as many photographers have said/. if your photos are not good enough. you're not close enough. i agree with that and bruce is the perfect example of that. this is TRUE street photography. none of that panzy telephoto stalker crap from across the street, you're better off being a paparazzi asshole
I see zero street photography shots. All I see are controlled model shots. Do you even shoot street?
Obviously you haven't shot like Bruce does, so you don't even know how much of a negative response you'll get when you try to pass off the public as cheap (ie. FREE) models.
Oh, wait. I see one street shot on your flickr with a person it it (called Watching, Waiting) but the person is 100 meters away.
@ourvinylcollection you probably missed his point. he just tries to get through. as he said, he walsk on the west side of the street. that is the completely different way that the people use to walk. so conflicts are programmed.
Definitely not the technique i would use. If this guy were in Paris, he'd be screamed at and possibly punched too. Flashing people's faces the way he does isn't my idea of street photography, at all!
Christ this guy is nightmare and i have not even met him. The scene he is capturing is a false street scene smell or not , stunning people by hammering them with flash tends to produce a character from a normal individual.
So what? It would be a boring world if everyone acted exactly the same. If you don't like it, don't shoot that way. In the grand scheme of things he's not harming anyone. The Photoshop retoucher that wipes away all the "imperfections" for magazines has worse morals than Gilden, in my opinion.
The inner essance of his work is great. I understand it might be rude to flash someone in the face, but its all in the name of ART. yep, that's the american way huh? somebody slightly inconvienences you and the reaction is to sue them because you are such a righteous person...idiot
what a fantastic character, each individuals have their own way of taking their photos, even know his is a very intrusive style he produced some fantastic shots. Well worth it!
@raggedphoto You're saying you cannot compose an image while hipfiring? Believe me, some photographers are perfectly able to carefully and precisely compose an image without looking through the viewfinder.
bad luck. maybe it depends on the photographer.maybe you looked vulnerable to him. or maybe you are too intrusive. its all psychological. dont make that incident let you down, keep photographing. if ppl get angry with you, id say its WORTH IT!
At first I wasn't sure about his "attitude". The way he just flashes into people faces out of nowhere etc. But I really liked his images and now after watching this a few times I'm thinking, I wish I had the balls to do this myself. But i just don't think I could.
I appreciate his style in capturing pictures but I don't appreciate his attitude. I'm going to try out his style, but my attitude sure isn't going to be the same as his.
guess you got to be abit somewhat crazy in things liike such to become part of the world renowned photographer shooting team: magnum. to make them somewhat unqiue
What an ass. And the thing is, he makes some good photos but only a small percentage are great. A VERY small percentage. I'd never buy one of his books....
I just wondered can someone like him can shoot whoever he wants on the street? What is the common law? He is a bit annoying...And don't know how can his pictures are good photos?
He's being rude and inconsiderate? Uh, duh? That's kind of the point. Art isn't all pretty flowers and kittens.
This guy is old school New York. He doesn't give a damn, he's going to do whatever he wants and make compelling work out of it. The world needs people like this; the ones who shut the fuck up, get in your face, and just do it.
I wish I can do what he does. But somehow, if I do it, I might get arrested or may be not. May be I should act an ass like this guy does to get what I want to shoot. Then will my pictures will get as much attention as his guy's? I don't know aobut that...I need someone to promote my work...A lot of the time, it is not how good your work is but how good you or your agent promote your work to get you to be known...And I am sure he has the connection that makes him well known...
whether you agree with his style or not doesn't matter. The point is he's making great prints. He understands what he's doing, he knows why he is shooting, and he could care less about anyone else. He reminds me of Dylan
hehe.. last yr. ive watched this video , thinking .. what the hell!!! thats not right !!! ---but now taking street shots almost a year now ! all I can say is WOW !!! lol - --
robert capa also did street photography. But whoever you listen to tell you his oppinion about him, he would tell you he is decrete. You didnt notice he was there.
anyway, I dont think this guy, magnum or whatever, can claim these pictures, it's anethical, stupid, megalomaniac, and egoistic
thats not right. Nobody owns anyone, nobody owns the street. You can't do that and say this is my photograph. No its not yours. You are a silly old annoying man. Holding a camera does not give you any right to do that. Actually holding a camera should be like a burden. An extra weight. You should be thinking how to shoot and the object to come with caracter, and the shoot to have character rather than thinking ways to lift your career. where is your ethics? You should have humility against peopl
as usa rights of a photographer goes, as long as there are many people in a group around watching the same thing, and it's in a public accessible to everyone, it's permitted.
It's his style, why should anyone have anything against it?
The pictures are good, but I think that's because I've not seen the like before, however, I'm not a fan of the person. I know he say's he has no ethics, but that's not the same as empathy which every human needs to survive as part of society and I don't think he has this, such a shame.
He doesn't capture the real expression because he's too invasive. A flash a few feet from someone's face is hardly going to provide a natural street shot, rather someone's hand up, trying to look away, certainly aware of the photographer. I admire his courage but not his work.
Just because its not your perfect ideal of what street photography is, doesnt mean its not good street photography. Look at some of his work from haiti and from the 60s and 70s and youll feel lame for not appreshiating his awesome work.
I'm referring to his work in relation to this piece, because that's what's being discussed here. Blasting a flash in someone's face from a couple of feet just seems like a very lazy approach to street photography, IMO. Guts, yes. Talent, no.
I agree in a way. He shoots people who don't smile and people who get flashed in their face will either look surprised or serious/angry. Never happy ,so the range of emotions is very limited or orginal.

Exactly what is Bruce Gilden trying to "capture"?
If he's trying to capture the body language of people reacting to an inconsiderate arse hole that jumps in front of their face and takes a picture without their permission, then he is a genius. And hats off to him to having "no ethics", as it's essential for the type of work he does.

Respecting people is important.

This guy is a crock of shit! And his pictures just stink. WTF does he think he's doing? I see better stuff on fucking Flickr. Whatever dude....

The world needs people like this; the ones who shut the fuck up, get in your face, and just do it.
speedgraphic 2 years ago 6
I wish I can do what he does. But somehow, if I do it, I might get arrested or may be not. May be I should act an ass like this guy does to get what I want to shoot. Then will my pictures will get as much attention as his guy's? I don't know aobut that...I need someone to promote my work...A lot of the time, it is not how good your work is but how good you or your agent promote your work to get you to be known...And I am sure he has the connection that makes him well known...
wikct2 2 years ago
whether you agree with his style or not doesn't matter. The point is he's making great prints. He understands what he's doing, he knows why he is shooting, and he could care less about anyone else. He reminds me of Dylan

Good pictures but his behavior is completely inacceptable

is that a reflex? and i think that the ISO must be around 800 or high
anyma19 2 years ago
It's a Leica. He's using flash so he could use 100 ISO and be fine.
This guy is so in-your-face! Not really my style to use flash like this but to each his own.
fodera6 2 years ago
mm youre right about the leica and the flash..
the street photography needs to have a little tact

that is not rude, i mean its just a photo!

robert capa also did street photography. But whoever you listen to tell you his oppinion about him, he would tell you he is decrete. You didnt notice he was there.
anyway, I dont think this guy, magnum or whatever, can claim these pictures, it's anethical, stupid, megalomaniac, and egoistic

I love this guy. Totally aggressive street photography approach. I thought I had been too aggressive before, but now I see just how far one can go.
Janakin 2 years ago
you really need another person to see this?
alexanderrrrrrrrr 2 years ago
thats not right. You should have humility against peopl
rockhardandloud 2 years ago
as usa rights of a photographer goes, as long as there are many people in a group around watching the same thing, and it's in a public accessible to everyone, it's permitted.

Fredolow 2 years ago 5
Just because its not your perfect ideal of what street photography is, doesnt mean its not good street photography. Look at some of his work from haiti and from the 60s and 70s and youll feel lame for not appreshiating his awesome work.
abcdenjoi94 2 years ago
Ethics > Techniques.
Photographer without proper ethics is fail, regardless at what he produce.
hertian 2 years ago 3
who says its not street photography?
if he uses a flash and doesnt capture real expression it just stops it being truly documentary. but its still street phtography
icklewillywoowoo 2 years ago
I'm referring to his work in relation to this piece, because that's what's being discussed here. Blasting a flash in someone's face from a couple of feet just seems like a very lazy approach to street photography, IMO. Guts, yes. Talent, no.
Fredolow 2 years ago 2
I agree in a way. He shoots people who don't smile and people who get flashed in their face will either look surprised or serious/angry. Never happy ,so the range of emotions is very limited or orginal.
royalsteven 2 years ago 2
i'm not so brave to take those kind of shots. even with my telephoto lens i get timid. lol
