  • great musicians

  • Temptations was better

  • wonderful...

  • Why must people on here talk about how good music is and then brag about how young they are, is that supposed to mean something? Who really gives a shit. Just a thought. And Michael's awesome.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • CCR IS THE ORIGINAL!!!! FUCK MICHAEL MCDONALD I TELL CCR U MAKE THIS SONG DIE DIE DIE HURRY UP TO DIEE!!!!!

  • @wanodst1 LOL how stupid are you. CCR version is just another cover. now you DIE!!!! or whatever it is you wishes other people usual.

  • Marvin was Mike's hero (after Ray Charles) and he thought long + hard about the Motown albums... walked away from the project couple of times until they offered to make him a Motown artiste in the deal. Would you refuse that chance? The reason for the reticence is that he felt no one (including himself) could match Marvin and is there much point playing second fiddle on a classic song? In the end he accepted Motown's pleas that it would help keep the man in the light for a modern audience

  • Now this is music

  • great !

  • Is there anything this man can not sing ? Sweet soulful voice throw any song at him and he will deliver.

  • omg. michael mcdonald can get it! he can sing to me everynight! so much soul.....

  • no one can sing that song like marvin gaye hang it where you from everone thats marvin song please!!!!!!

  • @Winter412

Actually, if you'll look, Smokey Robinson did the song before anyone, so you don't know what you're talking about...

  • @Winter412 Exactly, nobody sings it like Marvin - that's what's great about music, it doesn't belong to anyone, and everyone is free to offer their personal take - I love Marvin's various versions, but I also happen to like this. Hey I like oranges AND apples, and so do many others! I 'd bet a lot of money that Marvin would like this...

  • OK no song belongs to anybody in particular - relax! If you suddenly find yourself singing this in the shower I'll bet you don't just shut up!!!!!

  • this video is timeless.. Love what the brother is doin. but I fell in love Yvonne Gage.. Baby girl has something wonderful going on. I only wish she could sing with band. Wow

  • i agree with you charrmmee marvin gay would in "heaven" listening to michael doing this song ....then again michael is probably the only one that could sing this song as good as marvin...

  • coolest white man ever!!

  • @betrekwoman Hahahaha - bollocks - there have always been loads of "cool" white people and any amount of black a*****es - and of course VICE VERSA. What a stupid fucking tuppeny halfpenny racist comment. You need to get out more!

  • @twangbarfly Hmmm . . . i'm really trying quite hard to see things from your point of view, but i'm having some difficulty fitting my head far enough up my arse. Do you have any suggestions?

  • @betrekwoman Yep - I suggest you get someone to take a photo and post it on here so we can all see how cool you look ....

  • nunca esteve no brasil, infelismente!

  • Saw Michael in Concert at Leeuwin Estate on Sunday...and he + his band were brillant!!!!

  • i L-O-V-E this music on his voice!

    this is my favourite music!

  • I still don't think any version beats the Gladys Knight and the pips version.

  • Wow. 15-year old me would hate this guy, but he kills!

  • marvin would be so proud. 2 of my fav's.

  • Pat Coil is from Dallas. Great to see him hooked up with a great act.

  • Im sorry but, what happens with the women in the audience at about 10-12 seconds just put me off the whole performance

  • They do look a little ridiculous, but that ruins the show for you??

How about people urinating in situ at an outdoor Jimmy Buffett concert? How about fans getting crushed in mosh pits? Or crowd surfers vomiting as they pass over? I'd say that's a better way to ruin a performance.

But admittedly, pretending to "get into it" - while sitting on your ass before the song is even past the intro - is trying a little too hard for soul music.

  • @badders0waffle0blade Hahaha - truly pathetic - nobody but you saw that - relax and listen to the music! Think how lucky you were that the concert was only spoiled for you here on YouTube, where it didn't even cost you USD 0.00000001, and that you didn't have to shell out USD 80 or more to focus your attention on the women 10 rows in front of you rather than on the music. You should get a special prize for gratuitous whinging.

  • @badders0waffle0blade You are joking, right.....lol

  • @badders0waffle0blade then I think you were just looking for a reason to not watch this video.

  • @badders0waffle0blade what? what happened? all I saw was some guy picking his nose and then realising he might be on camera.

  • super cool

  • Who are the sisters singing back ground? Does anybody know?

  • @dorfgnal

Francine Smith, Simbryt Whittington, Yvonne Gage - Backup Vocals.

  • This man is better than Marvin Gaye! I would like 2 see Jahn Teigen take on this song.... If u aint heard him sing u need to check him out, he is on youtube. his best performance is mil etter mil from the 1978 eurovision contest!

  • A Marvin Gaye only comes once in a lifetime. I forever Grateful that he came along in mine

  • I'm amazed! Outstanding! One of the last really big ones! Great Show! I've just rediscovered Michael McDonald...

  • i think thw world should be very proud of all MM has contributed, a voice unlike any other...melanie

  • very talented guy

  • I'm just glad to see m'girl Simbryt singing in the middle there at 0:40. She's so awesome. Go Sim!!!

  • For another (amazing) interpretation of this song, by the Doug Anthony All Stars do a search on youtube for "heard it through the grapevine DAAS". It's spine-tinglingly good.

The video ID is C-fLZOJ-huE if you know how to paste that into a youtube video URL (I can't work out how to get youtube to accept a comment that has a full URL in it).

  • Realmente no dejo de deleitarme con esta maravillosa voz...siento tanto que no haya venido a sud -america a presentarse en vivo...lo seguiremos esperando

  • Fantastic!!!!!

  • Get down Brother!! Love you Michael.

  • Another song, another victim of Michael McDonald

  • Thru the decades, I always wondered how much Black tail Michael McDonald pulls. Women love a man who can sing...especially if its a White man who can sing soul so convincingly from within.

  • Someone should post the studio version by Michael McDonald; It rocks! Marvin Gaye would be proud!

  • Let's also add a compliment to the BV artists. Superb accuracy and style. And, let's also add that girl in the middle is sensationally pretty.

  • The man can sing. He has a unique voice and he dose this song with such great passion and soul.

  • Great cover. So often covers lose the 'point' of the original. This improves upon the original.

And that drummer. Wow - o bloody hell wow!!

  • It's sure a great cover, great voice but it's impossible to top Marvin Gaye. The original was and still the best version

  • The song was recorded first by the Miracles, actually. Apparently, it sucked. So did the attempt by the Isleys, which also preceded Marvin's recording. Berry Gordy thought Marvin's version sucked also, and had Gladys Knight and the Pips do a take which was released first. If it weren't for Norm Whitfield (one of the songwriters), Marvin's version might still be pressure-canned in the Motown basement.

  • great voice

  • !aaMacdonald Rocks!

  • and the lady on the drums is dead on it

    I love this sound

  • he sounds like a bruthah!

  • I know he could have been one

  • One of the best voices to EVER sing a note !!!!

  • nossa esse cara canta mtooooo sem contar os musicos dele q são realmente mtooo bons!!!

eu recomendo...esse video é mtooo bom!!!

  • dude hes my second cousin

  • this is one down white dude, go head boy i see you

  • very good song...good interpretation

  • Very good.

  • Awesome. I saw him live at Birmingham Symphony Hall, it was the Soul Speak tour and he was absolutely amazing. A true legendary musician.

    Fantastic band too.

  • now this is REAL music. Id rather listen to this than this bull crap music industry these days and im 25 lol

  • Great version from a great blue eyed singer,.ktf.

  • Love his motown cd. x

  • it is brill 0ne and 2

  • thanks motown for share love this sound

  • he has a great soul voice

  • Yes he has Bob, thanks I like him

  • Michael > Marvin

  • He's very cool and did credit to the song and those before him.

    ACES

  • This man have so much soul, I enjoy his motown covers so much. Wow he was teary here!!

  • omg iam 29 years old how the hell did i miss a voice like this .iam now his no 1 fan .

  • Excellent cover of a classic hit... thank you for uploading this!

  • wow that band is kicking.

  • right Tommy...woman in the middle is awesome!

  • There's something sexy about watching ladies make music in general - but yes, the bg singers are classy in this performance. So is that violin player we see so much of here (must be the glasses). All so focused, yet obviously having a great time.

  • his voice feels like heaven.. this guy is soo awesome

  • he sounds just like the CD!

  • That is what I'm talking about. If you are not going to re-invent something this beautiful. Stay faithful to the original. Great great great!!

  • u do knoe that marvin gayes version aint the original rite?? gladys knight and the pips did the original 2 years be4 he turned it classic

  • Thanks for the fact motownkrazy... It is important to know. I also discovered recently that a song like " R E S P E CT" had been around for a long time before Aretha shot it to the moon !

  • Not quite. Berry Gordy would not release Marvin Gaye's recording, which was done before that of Gladys Knight and the Pips. In 1968 one of the songwriters, Norman Whitfield, got Marvin's recording put on "In The Groove" despite Gordy's reluctance (because the song had already been a hit). It was requested highly as a single and eventually got made into one later that year. But no, Marvin's recording was not the original, per se. One or two other groups recorded it previously.

  • I am great fan of Michael McDonald and simply love all of songs :-)

  • Marvin Gaye would be proud! :]

  • Michael is one of the FEW "white" people with soul, no lie

  • Seriously. This man has a KILLER voice. SO much soul..god I love his voice

  • hell he is one of the few ppl left with soul

  • Not demigration to the other women singing back up, they are great also. But that one in the middle YEAH!!!!

  • Yeah, none of them have any problems with looks or voice, to be sure. The singer you're talking about is Simbryt Whittington. I dig Yvonne Gage, actually. But all three make a very classy performance.

  • of the 3 back up singers , the chick in the middle is all class!! thats a real woman right there!!

  • for real! I'm getting j fever!

  • What a Great Voice!!!

  • Marvin Gaye was good for his time , Michael McDonald was good for his.

  • Awesome, thanks for sharing it, I had been looking for a videoclip of mike mcdonald performing this song for ages!

  • Michael McDonald > Chuck Norris

  • Chuck Norris...haha... if Michael McDonald ever takes a job with Fox News, I'll kick his ass like Chuck Norris.

  • He has an amazing voice.

  • Amazing, almost better then Marvin.....Thanks for sharing this video ;-)

  • He's a class act and when he finds his comfort zone like singing Motown Classic like "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". What Soulfulness this man has. Michael Mcdonald was "Soul Patrol" way before Taylor Hicks took it his own way.

  • Amazing!!

Michael McDonald and his stylish music!

    ^^
