okay i just saw a chipmunk running from a nearby patch of mulch and i let it go on its way. then as i walked by the mulch i heard a bark much like the second one coming from a hole. are they mating at this time of the year?

Yes, throughout March and maybe into April, it's chipmunk breeding season. They like to chase each other around.
