Man i remember buying this at HMV in 2005 seen it about five times its filled with cliche's but i still found this to one of those movies you just have to love. The film looks great the Acting was good plus the movie had a pretty powerful plot. It is not an action film like the trailer suggest its a Dramatic piece of art.
OMG this was so great... really made my cry... and I am 25 y old guy. The direction is very specific, but the feel of this movie and music cannot be undermined!!

My DVD is all scratched up now. I refuse to buy the American version since it has 20 minutes cut, some of the subtitles are unfinished, and no special features. WTF America.
This movie has absolutely amazing imagery. The storyline is great. There are some parts of it that are kinda stupid but it's easy to forget them.
The ending just leaves me with so many questions and yet I am fine with there being no sequel.
This is how neo sapiens are created. One of which out of pure anger manages to conjure up some relics of western past. Evidenced by the sudden appearance of a gothic castle that he uses as his base of operations. He manages to mass produce robots to battle the Eastern Federation. He uses nazi type symbols for his 4 man faction. A faction that eventually dwindles down to nothing.
I enjoyed it. The Eastern Federation appears to be some kind of Communist dystopia, evidenced by the use of Hanzi and Cyrillic. The national speeches also sound like North Korean Broadcasts. But the elites arent Chinese. They are Japanese. Despite europa being in the story, there appears to be no europeans left. There is section 7, which appears to be remnants of Chinese civilization. These people are labeled terrorists and their bodies to be used as genetic experiments.
Its a pretty good film from what I have seen so far. The story is dark and potentially offensive for some. But its my cup of tea. The edgy sci fi is also quite unique given that its a Japanese movie.

Casshern has to be the best example of Christian Averse Film since, Federico Fellini's Otto e Mezzo. Where in that film, the main protagonist gives up on creating a Space Rocket Launch pad, and spends all his time messing with a Singing, (TJIOM) Dramatic Family Drama.
What Casshern realizes for many Japanese people is the ability for the Japanese nation to realise their dreams in Computer Graphics and Drama, but not in real life. All the beautiful achitecture cannot be recreated in real life, because the Japanese dissuade individuals from eating too much, and from not fitting their expensive italian clothes. CC is BC.
this is the most amazing and truly beautiful film ive seen. it does have subtitles, but you must listen to their language and their real voices if you are to watch it.

Saw it about a year ago. I think it's best seen in pieces, because the storytelling style is a bit weird. It's like a really really long music video... good, but better if seen in sections because it feels like it's just the same music video that's been playing for the last hour or so. If it were a series of short films, I think I'd like it more, instead of one single movie.
the localization was a piece of shit. the cut out scenes, rearranged the movie, and changed the context with an inferior translation to the Japanese release. SHAME on Dreamworks for taking over 3 years to say fuck you to Casshern fans.
The music in this movie is soo sad to listen to. I bought the soundtrack because the music was one of the big keys in making this movie legendary. The movie has an amazing story and message to give, backed by an outstanding cast and music creator. I can't get enough of this movie. My favorite movie of all time :D

This movie is on sale in a couple of video stores in NYC. They're all in Japanese with English subtitles tho'! I still want this movie, but don't feel like reading sibtitles and watching the film at the same time.....yeah I know, lazy!! lol

Man, the first time I saw Casshern was on Sci-Fi Anime '95 week on cable. That's when they had Demon City Shinjuku, Loch the superpower, 8 Man after, Casshan the Robot Hunter, and some other one I can't remember. I didn't even know they had a live action movie of it. Nor did I know it actually came out in the 70's either.
i don't give a DAMN what anybody says...this movie is excellent! this movie actually made me CRY! can you BELIEVE it? if you can get a lil bit past the "cheese" action bits, you'll understand this is one of the most heartbreaking stories.

@rockette1991 i recommend a film called alive and a film callled versus. the ending to the film is basically the two of them recreating life out of love the way humanity originally came to be. but after time humans begin to think the only way to solve violence is with more violence. and so on and so on. they basically recreated life on another planet giving some one else hope or a chance for peace in their future, to start again. its all one big metaphor.

@project0omega no but yeah basically u got it the idea is that the definition of good and evil is always changing. and the idea is with different generation's heros and villains change. at one point the good guy could become the bad guy. there is no number 2 to but the director did another movie called alive which is awesome.
i wasn't quite so sure what to think of this film. it seemed like a really nice art piece up until the point where the neoroids attack and casshern starts smashing up poorly rendered cg robots. for a film that's all about the special effects, the special effect weren't all that good...anyone agree?
@technofrenik I dont think the special effects were supposed to look real, they were trying to create a hyper real world. I dont think the film was about special effects the film was a huge art piece on the effects of war and human violence. the effects were only a small part of it. the movie was trying to get across a interesting metaphor on human nature.
Maybe it was the bad translation, but this was the most baffling and confusing movie ever. Not to mention the fights had way too much shaky cam to be enjoyable, a la Batman Begins.
for the record, it completely depends on what version of the movie you watched.. the japanese original cut is really confusing. The north american release a year or two ago has a lot more scenes added in that make it a lot more sensible.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, regardless of the cheesey action scenes when hes fighting robots haha.
i got this film in a car boot sale in aberdeen. i thought the cover looked cool so i got it . i never thought it would be so good though. theres something about it i just cant put my finger on. something that makes it stand out.
The song name is 'Requiem', by a Japanese band called The Back Horn. The song title is レクイエム in Japanese, copy paste it if you're having trouble, the band name is usually in English.
hmm if u mean with similar also with alot of deep thinking i recommend ghost in the shell,but if u mean just sth with this kind of beautiful CG scenes u could check out goemon,i think its by the same director
Moves kind of slow though it was great but it seemed like they really tried to tell everythong too much which made it move slow but hey we usually complain when they leave stuff out still good movie to wathc if love the series and its really is a beautiful movie.
It makes me think "Final Fantasy" Because of the style of fighting and the amazing environments..I'm gonna go buy this from my work asap...it looks and sounds amazing

la trama del film è in gran parte diversa dall'anime!! secondo me hanno sprecato tempo nel fare questo film.. le uniche cose apprezzabbili sono il costume di casshern e i robot!

Wow that movie was impressive. It was pretty hard to understand everything. But the message of the film was just wow. U really have to get it or you will find it boring.

Man, the first time I saw Casshern was on Sci-Fi Anime '95 week on cable. That's when they had Demon City Shinjuku, Loch the superpower, 8 Man after, Casshan the Robot Hunter, and some other one I can't remember. I didn't even know they had a live action movie of it. Nor did I know it actually came out in the 70's either.

i don't give a DAMN what anybody says...this movie is excellent! this movie actually made me CRY! can you BELIEVE it? if you can get a lil bit past the "cheese" action bits, you'll understand this is one of the most heartbreaking stories.

@aniraina21 Heyy, I watched this today for the first time...I thought it was visually stunning...I managed to follow and briefly understand the storyline, but could you elaborate on the ending for me please....I didnt fully understand what happened when everyone seemed to have died...thanku......also do u know or recommend any other films that are similar to this? thanks

@rockette1991 i recommend a film called alive and a film callled versus. the ending to the film is basically the two of them recreating life out of love the way humanity originally came to be. but after time humans begin to think the only way to solve violence is with more violence. and so on and so on. they basically recreated life on another planet giving some one else hope or a chance for peace in their future, to start again. its all one big metaphor.

@project0omega no but yeah basically u got it the idea is that the definition of good and evil is always changing. and the idea is with different generation's heros and villains change. at one point the good guy could become the bad guy. there is no number 2 to but the director did another movie called alive which is awesome.

i wasn't quite so sure what to think of this film. it seemed like a really nice art piece up until the point where the neoroids attack and casshern starts smashing up poorly rendered cg robots. for a film that's all about the special effects, the special effect weren't all that good...anyone agree?

@technofrenik I dont think the special effects were supposed to look real, they were trying to create a hyper real world. I dont think the film was about special effects the film was a huge art piece on the effects of war and human violence. the effects were only a small part of it. the movie was trying to get across a interesting metaphor on human nature.

Maybe it was the bad translation, but this was the most baffling and confusing movie ever. Not to mention the fights had way too much shaky cam to be enjoyable, a la Batman Begins.

for the record, it completely depends on what version of the movie you watched.. the japanese original cut is really confusing. The north american release a year or two ago has a lot more scenes added in that make it a lot more sensible.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, regardless of the cheesey action scenes when hes fighting robots haha.

i got this film in a car boot sale in aberdeen. i thought the cover looked cool so i got it . i never thought it would be so good though. theres something about it i just cant put my finger on. something that makes it stand out.

The song name is 'Requiem', by a Japanese band called The Back Horn. The song title is レクイエム in Japanese, copy paste it if you're having trouble, the band name is usually in English.

BEautiful movie good too.
Moves kind of slow though it was great but it seemed like they really tried to tell everythong too much which made it move slow but hey we usually complain when they leave stuff out still good movie to wathc if love the series and its really is a beautiful movie.
