  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful song and Beautiful vid, thanks for posting...who needs Optrex!

  • Wonderful footage : )

  • lovw this song soo much <3

  • Dun na nGall an gairdín draíocht na hÉireann Donegal, the enchanted garden of Ireland

  • best coastline ever <3 glencolumbkille and sliver sands x

  • So glad I stumbled on this tune and video. I have made two solo trips to Donegal and visited all the coastal towns portrayed plus Letterkenny and Lifford. The friendliness was outstanding, especially being an O'Donnell.Owenis Bar in Dunloe and many other pubs where very memorable,I would love to do an annual pilgrimage but have been hit by the recession, I willreturn one day to complete my journey; ...Arranmore and Tory Island.

  • well done guys for posting this beautiful song, the pictures are great, they add a sense of depth to it, god bless and god rest Sean

  • Pure class.

  • you don't have to be Irish, just listen with your guts and you'll cry your heart out

  • Hi Luke. :)

Years ago you introduced us to Pete after I'd commented on this video. Well, we toured Ireland last week (including Donegal) so "I just dropped in to see you" and thank you for making that introduction. We'll be coming back over in September too.

    Hope you're well.

JahLove from all of the band.

  • Mum : this was your favourite song . You're gone now before I could tell you how much

I loved you for all you did . I pray that one day we'll walk along the beach at Derrybeg

arm in arm on a summer evening . Mary, Queen of Heaven , look after her who spent

her life caring for others .

  • Fascinating to see the old pictures of these places, most of them would be pretty much unrecognisable now. Many changes but much is still the same.

  • 7.33 mins...you think they could have stuck a few more towns in like Downings, Carrigart, Cranford, Portsalon, Manorcunningham, Kerrykeel, Cresslough, Dunfanaghy, Derrybeg, Killybegs, Redcastle, Ramelton, Rathmullen, Malin, Carndonagh....

  • @mikeswimming or killybegs!

  • @mikeswimming - Carndonagh and Ramelton both in there

  • Make's me proud of being a donegal man, home is where the heart is.

  • what an emotional song, even better live!!

  • beautiful song...

  • I've only heard Keith Harkin or Celtic Thunder sing this (mp3 off internet...they won't come to England...) and it's now my favourite song. But this is amazing. True old Irish music. Amazing. Makes me happy.

  • Sean Mc Bride was the head master in St. Baithins in St. Johnston, where I grew up. He taught me Irish, Irish history, geography and a lot more besides. This song is so special to me and Paul Brady does justice to the song and the man who wrote it . R.I.P. master Sean Mc Bride,

    Pàdraig Ó Guaille.

  • thanks

  • anyone know what album this is off?

  • @fardownfarmer

This version by Paul Brady is from his 1985 album "Back to the Centre"

  • Ortodox Celts "Cant say another prayer" !! Donegal, please listen song !

  • such a great song...x

  • Such a gorgeous song....!!

  • such a lovely song.....xx

  • mm

  • worked in nearly all the places depicted. the towns have hardly changed apart from some town centre development in the form of a fancy pavement etc. looking back i think the old town scapes are way ahead. so much for modernisation. most countryside shots have changed alot what with new buildings. moving north from lagg chapel you'll find malin head, irelands most northerly point. well worth a visit for scenery and stress relieving. nice walks from the tower to hells hole and devils bridge.

  • Makes me proud to be a McBride and a Donegal man any time I hear this :)

  • Can't beat the high notes on a tin whistle for emotion. Love this.

  • special song special place !

  • This is a very beautiful video, I'm from Letterkenny, my mother's from Glenties and my father from Cardonagh. I work regularly in Glenties and Carndonagh. They haven't changed all that much. Still as beautiful as ever xxxxxxxxxx

  • youre right christy after all lifford is the capital of the county

  • why didnt you include lifford?

  • What a memory. Master mc Bride, he was our teacher in our primary in St. Johnston and he wrote this melody. We had a lot of stick from him. but survived. Lovely melody-

  • ahhh what a beautiful song and well sung by Mr B

thanks for posting ,the pics add a bit of atmosphere to it

RIP Sean heavens gained another great Irish man

  • Isn't ''the hills of Glenswilly'' the same air

  • Would love to hear Daniel O'Donell sing this song as he is a real donegal man, no offence of course to you strabane folks.

  • Lovely..what a voice Mr Brady has.Is it me or is the melody very similar to "The Lakes of Ponchartrain"?

  • O K. So he did'nt write this song. Sorry. But he sings it beautifuly do's he not?

  • Paul Brady! wot can u say. But if u like this check out a brilliant rendition of "Steel Claw" sung by Tina Turner on her "Private Dancer" album. Cant believe the same bloke wrote both songs, but they're both classic.

  • We just came back from Letterkenny..rented a farm house for three weeks. Nice memories....we are going back when we can afford it ...loved Burt Castle ...

  • This haunting song is a testamony to a bygone age. I pray, that the simple sentiments contained, will once again florish in homesteads of the future.

    M. Glynn

  • Thanks Marty;))

    Maya

  • awww, Just cus its sunday night...

  • back again

  • No Ballyshannon. What an omission!

  • @telboytube On Purpose perhaps!

  • Thanks SO much for sharing this!

  • A time long gone....in a country that will live forever through the hearts of its people.

  • well donegalraymie those would be a very wet and deep few yards if there was,nt a bridge between lifford and stabane one thinks!!!!!! personaly speaking i think paul brady is more of a donegal person than tyrone ( no offence ment tyrone people) as he spent more time in donegal playing music tha in strabane, but i dont think we donegal and tyrone people will fight about that as we both agree he is one class act.

  • @inishtrahull1

Then thank the Lord for bridges! We agree on what matters.

  • Strong emotions rising. I guess I should go back for a visit. I left Donegal many years ago.

All the best from an Irish exile

    Class of 1968

  • reminds me off my first time fishing ,with my friends in kellybegs

  • this is the best version of this song by a million miles and that is from a donegal man who never will tire of hearing it, the tin whistle on this is so so soulful and bewitching, paul brady may not be a born donegal man but he puts so much felling into this song that we are proud paul to call you one of us.

  • @inishtrahull1

Well, he's a West Tyrone man from Strabane! We're only talking about a few yards now. Be reasonable!

  • The smells, the memories for a little child to keep.

  • well put together, some nice photos

  • I can almost smell the turf on the air. I'm a Derry man but I think any Irish person , yank, aussie etc who spends any time in Donegal knows that place is the essence of the aul sod. This song by The Brady fella captures that essence and his genius is clear.

  • one of paul brady`s best.

  • Great version.

  • Donegal is the best place in the world, i am probably being a bit biased because i was born and bred in Donegal, but i just love it and will definately die here.. Anyone that has never visited, put it down on your list as a must do before u die.. You ll not regret it.. Great Video..

  • fantastic,!...god it makes me homesick, I spent every summer, the whole summer in Cleendra nr Dungloe and out in Churchill nr Letterkenny. And cried and cried all the way to the boat in the car. If I dont go home every year its like not having Christmas, its a must. Brilliant footage, well done......everyone!...never forget your roots! xx

  • My grandparents and an uncle were born and raised a couple of miles from Horn Head. I've visited there and I don't know which I love the most, my rellies or the wild beauty of the area. On the last evening of a visit, an aging cousin sang this song to us. I haven't heard it again til now. Lovely. Thank you.

  • I am from derry city my best hols was in donegal, what a great place just on our door step, some people just don't know what they have ontil they travel to other places.

  • Beautiful song... does anybody know any other songs similar to this 1?

  • @banddinbc

'Fraid it's not me, banddinbc. I'm not a famous actor. :(

    LOL.

  • Absolutely brilliant. I love Donegal and Paul Brady.

  • Thanks for posting this. Great to see Dungloe up there, I grew up on the fair hill until I was fifteen before moving to Dublin. My Granny owned Campbells hotel at the bridge in Dungloe, when there was only Sweeneys hotel and Campbells hotel in Dungloe. Anyone out there who would have went to Dungloe national school in the sixties?

  • A hauntingly good version. Always in the heart. Simply beautiful. Makes my thoughts travel.

  • Keith Harkin of Celtic Thunder does a beautiful rendition of this great song. I prefer it to this one, but both are worth taking the time to listen to. Check out the Keith Harkin version, just for grins.

  • Thanks for your thanks. I am now fast approachng 65 years of age and living on the other side of the world. But I cast my mind back to those early years in Donegal when life seem ed perfect. The only watch I needed was my stomach. When I was hungry that was dinner time. Thanks for brinning back so many happy memories. If I get to heaven before you do I will try and let you know if it's as beautiful as Donegal. If it is not I'm packing it in and going some where else

  • @k242rgdvhx247 with tears in my eyes i read your words, i too have fond, fond memories of Donegal, i don't know what it is but it is a special, special, place, you captured it so well, god bless you

  • @deslhurley Thanks. About five years ago my brother, myself and our wives spent a week in Fakcararagh, their first visit there. They were surprised at the friendliness of the people; there are not many places in the world where a total stranger will wish you good morning. My grandfather's cottage is just a ruin now but it was the most welcoming place one arth. Fifty years just rolled away as my brother and myself pointed out to our wives where we lived our boyhood adventures.. Heaven!

  • @k242rgdvhx247 How lovely that sounds what you just said. I am 60 and a grandmother of 3 but I love Irish music and history, and this is so peaceful and a lovely song and ictures of Ireland. I have only been to Dublin last year with my husband.

All the best to you !

  • @k242rgdvhx247 it is wonderful to har that your emoroes are so rich and that you have reached a ood age .....donegal is a fond memory for me also and I still go back as often as possible....I grew up in the Gaeltacht of Rosgoill and there was a real life happening there that was down to earth and filled with the mysteries of life!

The people loved their neighbours as themselves! Merry Christmas!

  • @k242rgdvhx247 that's beautiful

  • A shake down was a makeshift bed, a couch or even a bale of hay, just somewhere you sleep comfortably. As a schoolboy I spent my summer holidays in Donegal at my grandfather;s small farm. If there is a heaven it must be something like Donegal

  • it is heaven no doubt about that!

  • @k242rgdvhx247 chill out its only donegal dont cum

  • @k242rgdvhx247 i can totally relate as a child we spent every summer in Donegal and cried many tears on our return to scotland!

  • nice one luke as a donegal man well proud al l though thats a strabane man singing very good ta tu go maith

  • Class song im from Derry but Donegal sounds better lol thanks for posting up this song and vid

  • Back for another look around since I missed Donegal last month. Great auld pics. Especially touching is the one at 135 of the thatched roof cottage. It appears the 'door' isn't even solid? Maybe just enough to keep out the animals?

Would be interesting to juxtapose new pics taken from the same spots....hint, hint...it's been awhile since you made a vid!

  • i love this thx for posting

  • great song, great slideshow, great county.

  • beautifully presented

  • A lovely slide show to accompany Brady's definitive reading of a great song.

Just as he did with "Arthur McBride", Paul makes this song his very own. A supreme interpretation by an incomparable talent.

  • Are there houses to be born in?

  • Is it a village or at a particular place?? Where is it?

  • What does the "Bloody Foreland" mean?

  • Cnoc Fola "the hill of Blood "(Bloody Foreland) is so called because the sun, particularly at evening, lights up the rocks to a reddish hue. In the autumn ferns turn russet redish brown.

  • Saw Paul perform this in Castlebar,Co.Mayo at the beginning of April 2009.Gosh was Paul in grand form that night! Makes you always happy to be living in the Westttttt!

  • the best version ever

  • One day I'll return home to my lovely isles. Till then I'm trapped away from home. Drink a ginger for me till then.

  • As an ex-pat living in Boston, Mass; This song breaks my heart Absolutely beautiful...

  • AAA+ video. Thank you for posting it.

  • Love Paul Brady. My Dad was from a tiny central Donegal village called Ballybobaneen. One of my fav Donegal songs is "The Hills of Glenswilly" which I guess is a combo of 2 songs. It sounds a bit like "Homes"
