So glad I stumbled on this tune and video. I have made two solo trips to Donegal and visited all the coastal towns portrayed plus Letterkenny and Lifford. The friendliness was outstanding, especially being an O'Donnell.Owenis Bar in Dunloe and many other pubs where very memorable,I would love to do an annual pilgrimage but have been hit by the recession, I willreturn one day to complete my journey; ...Arranmore and Tory Island.
Years ago you introduced us to Pete after I'd commented on this video. Well, we toured Ireland last week (including Donegal) so "I just dropped in to see you" and thank you for making that introduction. We'll be coming back over in September too.
7.33 mins...you think they could have stuck a few more towns in like Downings, Carrigart, Cranford, Portsalon, Manorcunningham, Kerrykeel, Cresslough, Dunfanaghy, Derrybeg, Killybegs, Redcastle, Ramelton, Rathmullen, Malin, Carndonagh....
I've only heard Keith Harkin or Celtic Thunder sing this (mp3 off internet...they won't come to England...) and it's now my favourite song. But this is amazing. True old Irish music. Amazing. Makes me happy.
Sean Mc Bride was the head master in St. Baithins in St. Johnston, where I grew up. He taught me Irish, Irish history, geography and a lot more besides. This song is so special to me and Paul Brady does justice to the song and the man who wrote it . R.I.P. master Sean Mc Bride,
worked in nearly all the places depicted. the towns have hardly changed apart from some town centre development in the form of a fancy pavement etc. looking back i think the old town scapes are way ahead. so much for modernisation. most countryside shots have changed alot what with new buildings. moving north from lagg chapel you'll find malin head, irelands most northerly point. well worth a visit for scenery and stress relieving. nice walks from the tower to hells hole and devils bridge.
This is a very beautiful video, I'm from Letterkenny, my mother's from Glenties and my father from Cardonagh. I work regularly in Glenties and Carndonagh. They haven't changed all that much. Still as beautiful as ever xxxxxxxxxx

We just came back from Letterkenny..rented a farm house for three weeks. Nice memories....we are going back when we can afford it ...loved Burt Castle ...
well donegalraymie those would be a very wet and deep few yards if there was,nt a bridge between lifford and stabane one thinks!!!!!! personaly speaking i think paul brady is more of a donegal person than tyrone ( no offence ment tyrone people) as he spent more time in donegal playing music tha in strabane, but i dont think we donegal and tyrone people will fight about that as we both agree he is one class act.
this is the best version of this song by a million miles and that is from a donegal man who never will tire of hearing it, the tin whistle on this is so so soulful and bewitching, paul brady may not be a born donegal man but he puts so much felling into this song that we are proud paul to call you one of us.
I can almost smell the turf on the air. I'm a Derry man but I think any Irish person , yank, aussie etc who spends any time in Donegal knows that place is the essence of the aul sod. This song by The Brady fella captures that essence and his genius is clear.
Donegal is the best place in the world, i am probably being a bit biased because i was born and bred in Donegal, but i just love it and will definately die here.. Anyone that has never visited, put it down on your list as a must do before u die.. You ll not regret it.. Great Video..

Thanks for your thanks. I am now fast approachng 65 years of age and living on the other side of the world. But I cast my mind back to those early years in Donegal when life seem ed perfect. The only watch I needed was my stomach. When I was hungry that was dinner time. Thanks for brinning back so many happy memories. If I get to heaven before you do I will try and let you know if it's as beautiful as Donegal. If it is not I'm packing it in and going some where else
@k242rgdvhx247 with tears in my eyes i read your words, i too have fond, fond memories of Donegal, i don't know what it is but it is a special, special, place, you captured it so well, god bless you
@deslhurley Thanks. About five years ago my brother, myself and our wives spent a week in Fakcararagh, their first visit there. They were surprised at the friendliness of the people; there are not many places in the world where a total stranger will wish you good morning. My grandfather's cottage is just a ruin now but it was the most welcoming place one arth. Fifty years just rolled away as my brother and myself pointed out to our wives where we lived our boyhood adventures.. Heaven!
@k242rgdvhx247 How lovely that sounds what you just said. I am 60 and a grandmother of 3 but I love Irish music and history, and this is so peaceful and a lovely song and ictures of Ireland. I have only been to Dublin last year with my husband.
@k242rgdvhx247 it is wonderful to har that your emoroes are so rich and that you have reached a ood age .....donegal is a fond memory for me also and I still go back as often as possible....I grew up in the Gaeltacht of Rosgoill and there was a real life happening there that was down to earth and filled with the mysteries of life!
The people loved their neighbours as themselves! Merry Christmas!
A shake down was a makeshift bed, a couch or even a bale of hay, just somewhere you sleep comfortably. As a schoolboy I spent my summer holidays in Donegal at my grandfather;s small farm. If there is a heaven it must be something like Donegal
Back for another look around since I missed Donegal last month. Great auld pics. Especially touching is the one at 135 of the thatched roof cottage. It appears the 'door' isn't even solid? Maybe just enough to keep out the animals?
Would be interesting to juxtapose new pics taken from the same spots....hint, hint...it's been awhile since you made a vid!
What a fantastic collection of photographs. As for Paul Brady. What can I say. This version is awesome.Well done to the people who posted and worked on this slideshow.Ive some slideshows on You tube if you get a chance check some of my town Balbriggan and its people.User name martinfanning1.Tabhair aire.Martin
Cnoc Fola "the hill of Blood "(Bloody Foreland) is so called because the sun, particularly at evening, lights up the rocks to a reddish hue. In the autumn ferns turn russet redish brown.
Saw Paul perform this in Castlebar,Co.Mayo at the beginning of April 2009.Gosh was Paul in grand form that night! Makes you always happy to be living in the Westttttt!
I have never heard this excellent tune until today.....and its a beautiful one, ...... but I also have met many a Donegaller and loved each and every one. UP DONEGAL
Have watched this many times and appreciate the work that's gone into it. Would be lovely if a modern version of colour photos was done too....Donegal is soooo colourful!!!
paul brady never left donegal when he was young, he used it for inspiration, his mother taught here,he played ballybofey quite a bit before he made it,hes the best guitar player to come from this island.our island, nobody can take away the spirit of the music and song and people, live long.
Love Paul Brady. My Dad was from a tiny central Donegal village called Ballybobaneen. One of my fav Donegal songs is "The Hills of Glenswilly" which I guess is a combo of 2 songs. It sounds a bit like "Homes"
Only been to Donegal once and just found Paul Brady this morning when a friend on Youtube introduced me to his songs.. oh my gosh ..makes your heart just ache. from a descendant of the old sod here in Denver USA
i wonder what the venn diagram for listeners to Paul Brady and "lmfao - party rock anthem" is?

All the best to you !

A lovely slide show to accompany Brady's definitive reading of a great song.
Just as he did with "Arthur McBride", Paul makes this song his very own. A supreme interpretation by an incomparable talent.

What does the "Bloody Foreland" mean?
sportsnut712001 2 years ago
Cnoc Fola "the hill of Blood "(Bloody Foreland) is so called because the sun, particularly at evening, lights up the rocks to a reddish hue. In the autumn ferns turn russet redish brown.

One day I'll return home to my lovely isles. Till then I'm trapped away from home. Drink a ginger for me till then.

An Irishman should only ever drink ginger after it has been thoroughly diluted with Brandy!...

Love Paul Brady. My Dad was from a tiny central Donegal village called Ballybobaneen. One of my fav Donegal songs is "The Hills of Glenswilly" which I guess is a combo of 2 songs. It sounds a bit like "Homes"
