  • Bobby Unser and Sam Posey couldn't agree on anything. Whatever Sam said, Bobby would would say the exact opposite (sometimes bluntly).

  • @cwphunky68 I agree! Bobby I luv ya but your in that dirty air!!!

  • karas kota palirmo..good driver

  • but why they dont get out of the car faster? a crashed car should be left behind always ASAP!

  • I miss this commentary team like none-other. Anybody know why they had to be replaced by marty reid and co.?..

  • Damn American commentary is low standard.

  • @Willis2992 don't listen to it then asshole.

  • @Willis2992 The only thing worse than these guys are the nascar commentators....

  • drama queen and i,m a mansell fan lol

  • methanol, when burning, gives invisible flames

  • Hot water from the radiator would penetrate that drivers suit easily. I would be freaked out too with a car resting inches from my head, smoke drifting down, and the start getting burned by radiator water.

  • I remember this clearly, I mean I didn't think Nigel had much of a shot against the Penske's but damn it would've been nice to see him try then this Vitolo idiot ran him over on the warmup lane while the caution was out, WTF was he thinking about? Nigel's 94 season was a huge turn around was 93...

  • Wtf why did the safety guy tackle him? Unprofessional this isn't UFC.

  • @Lights0ut1109 So far as I get it, it's precaution. I mean, had him burning methanol in his clothes, it would have the fire extinguished.

  • Classic theatrics from Mansell.

  • We were sitting right where this happened. There doesn't appear to be video of the crash itself, but it was pretty scary. Vitolo basically ran over Mansell, and I was sure he was dead, that his head had been struck. This video doesn't at all show the extent of the crash.

  • Thank goodness. I was really worried there for a minute, but then saw that Dennis Vitolo is perfectly okay.

  • Bobby Unser is such an asshole.

  • Sorry, but Nigel's not faking that. Water would have burned through his overalls, and he was quite right to say that Vitolo should not have been in that race. I mean, what sort of driver fails to slow down enough, hits the last car in a train that 's going onto pit road, and ends up on top of the lead car in that same train? And under yellow, I might add!

Mansell was one of very few drivers who was capable of giving the specially-built Penskes a run for their money that day.

  • Dennis Vitolo and Hiro Matsushita made Indycar exciting. Once the awful drivers left, then we got bored. Hiro blocking Emerson Fittipaldi or Dennis Vitolo wrecking Nigel Mansell made the races more exciting. We need more pay drivers of mediocre quality.

  • well when it comes to racing i find the 24 hours of le mans to be the most interesting. Although i enjoyed it more before the lm cars. Formula 1 can be both boring and interesting though. On the other hand i find Nascar a bit repetitive. Nascar can be quite thrilling when people drive dirty though but then again it's also kinda dangerous. One type of racing i can't understand is drag racing... It's dangerous stupid and requires only a superior vehicle

  • @ulf123456 re the drag racing, not necessarily. Reaction time is everything in DR. the fastest car doesn't always win and often you will see a car with a faster elapsed time but a slower speed win the heat.

  • I agree, Im not a mansell fan but Vitolo was a pretty shit driver for someone who was meant to be a pro... and mansell never did this in F1......he was genuinally injured or hurting after this accident.

  • What was wrong with him?

  • @ManowarFan1985 The Meth fuel burns with no flame. Mansell was actually on fire, you just can't see the flames

  • Bobby Unser is such an asshole. He clearly just wants to argue.

  • " confirm that danny sah, Wuts tHIIis, WHATS THIS!? lol **later on** WHYY HOW DID THEY GET TO THIS POINT? " lol

  • whats with the stewrad talk about " Welcome to last week "

  • Vitolo was a piss poor driver anyways, I'm not surprised he crashed into someone.

  • Dennis Vitolo? Was he the Milka Dunno of this era ?

  • @olechevy And he was more costly to the power teams too.

  • @olechevy He was a part-time racer who only did a couple of races per year.

On the telecast, DV admitted full blame, saying his right front tagged John Andretti's left rear. DV hurtled over JA and the late Scott Brayton, and that's how he got crossways on Mansell.

Incidentally, Dennis is now in sports marketing, running his own firm in Florida.

  • what's this slapped? 99% of drivers are the same - only 1% has genius...a driver can only win in the right car...senna in a virgin would be last...the greats when they get that tiny advantage win everytime...but i assure you when he retires alonso will have 4 championships and i'm prepared to put everything i own on that (which is 25p)

  • Why does Nigel fall down and cry like a teen-girl in miniskirt?!?

  • mansell was so over rated...even a child would have come 5th in the f1 championship williams he won with...look at what he did at lotus with de angelis he was slower and de angelis was second rate...he's a great old bird but always moaning and exaggerating his worth...look at the crash in the 2 seater footage...it's his fault and he blames "the other guy" who happens to be one of the best f1 drivers ever - Fernando alonso...but i wish mansell well he had as much guts as anyone

  • @rendlesham Alonso seems to be getting slapped by Hamilton pretty regularly at the moment, I don't see him as on the all-time greats.

  • @mezzer99 My how the tables have turned! Who is the point leader? Yeah thought so...and where is lil Hammy? Yeah, he's behind the greatest FA, and the two Red Bulls! Hammy was a one season flash in the pan and when he's under pressure chokes every single time.

  • @Orangetree547 I think that as soon as he has a car that is genuinely competitive through the season you'll find that you're eating your own words.

  • Mansell acted like it was a near fatal accident, he just got some water from the radiator on him.

  • F1 is far better.

  • This accident happened on the exit of the pits and the safety car is deployed for several laps.

  • @ballstothewall24 wasnt he being scalded by boiling water?

how is jumping out of that situation called over re-acting?

  • @flipsidedogchop yes he was. steam actually.

  • Bobby Unser, for how good of a driver he was, he was an idiot as an announcer

  • The ABC cameras did not catch the accident itself, just the aftermath you see here. There is, however, footage shot by a spectator in the stands of the actual contact. The local TV station aired it the night of the race and I have not seen it since. It is from a distance and a bit grainy if I remember right. If anyone has it, I would love to see it again.

  • I really like mansell, but what the f**k was he doing after he got out of the car?! Was he injured or was he just acting?

  • @bubi8894

he was being burned by the methanol fuel fire, the flame of which is invisible.

  • @Mikosyko oh ok thats a reason, sorry, I really did not see

  • @bubi8894 indeed because its invisible lol

  • @alenoguerol666 i think i know where will ferrell got the idea for that scene in talladege nights!! ;)

  • No1 is better than Senna, NOONE! not even schumacher...

Bruno may be good someday but for now he needs a car... what he is driving is a "cart" not a F1 car LOL! XDD

  • @Willbrse what about fangio.the greatest racer of all time.senna does not come close

  • I have good motives to watch F1 if you think well about this (i'm brazilian ^^).. there are 4 brazilians there and Massa in Ferrari can win this year.. brazil always had drivers there and good ones but still boring since Senna died..

I still wanna see Rubens wining F1 once... but I don't think that it gonna happen this year!

  • I like NASCAR too ^^

Also liked F1 but before, since 2000 F1 is so boring

I meant losing fans in all the world, specialy in Asia with the night race since they have more interesting things in TV to watch. As I said before: the difference between the cars is too big this year, u have the leaders, guys that stay 2 sec/L behind the leaders, others stay 4 sec/L behind the leaders, and the others stay 6/L sec behind the leaders... this isn't nice to watch I prefer to see the old and good side by side

  • and what I said about F1 losing fans isn't a lie neither my own opinion, u can find news about this topic if u search... or i guess u don't know about F1 at all...

  • hahahahahhahahaha lol @ you xD

don't do these jokes, you gonna kill me of laughing XD

ya I saw schumacher behind and behind.... XD LOOOL

the diference between the cars in F1 this year is so big, there are like 3 "leagues in the same F1" come on open ur eyes LOL, F1 is a big fail, go watch V8 Supercars then u'll see a nice race league LOL

did u see the last Indy race in Sao Paulo? it has more overtakes than in 10 years F1 LOL ^^

  • @Willbrse hahaha V8 amatures! What a load of clumsy, overweight, redneck aussie shite!

where do u think the best drivers are? Indy? nascar? or F1?

    id say thats fairly obvious

  • Your drivers are to scared to drive indy. It is the greatest spectacle in all of racing. And k-mart was a great sponsor.

  • @coolerindy There have been quite a few F1 drivers who competed at Indy--Graham Hill, Nigel Mansell, Gugelmin, Montoya & Villeneuve (before going to F1), Mario & Michael Andretti, Ascari, Farina, the list goes on. I like Indy, and it is more dangerous than most F1 courses, but in the end it's still an oval.

  • I never seen 500,000 fans at an F1 race before,

  • F1 is losing fans in tracks and also at home, specialy in Asia, good luck to FOM they'll lose lots of money ^^

Who watched last Indy race in Sao Paulo saw a true race! F1 is boring and it makes me sleep -_-"

  • Freak-out marshall!!!

  • whats menthanol

  • It's the cigarettes they put in their race cars - menthenol or regular. Sorry couldn't resist. That would be menthol they put in cigarettes. Methanol is blend of fuel these cars run on, not to be confused with ethanol. Methanol advantage: light and colorless and is not nearly as flammable as gasoline. Disadvantage: However when it is burning you can't see the flame as you can w/ gasoline.

  • flyteman, you got a problem with the national association of stock automobile racing, because it is just as hard as racing indy or formula, hell even CART

  • no.. jooljet is entirely accurate in his assessment of Vitolo. He may not have been the worst but he had no business being at this level. Unfortunately in this case he took out any drama that remained in this race. Mansell was the only car capable of challenging the Penskes. not in outright speed but he was getting very good fuel mileage that day and was staying within striking distance.

  • Yo JoolJet,

Your comment on Vitolo is so in-accurate!! Let me guess, your a NASCAR fan aren't ya?

    lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i hated to hear bobby unser as color man he thought he knew everything and most of the time he was a major dumbass

  • Yeah but I always kinda enjoyed it when it was him and Posey and he would correct Posey and say "No Sam, you're dead wrong." like 5 times during a race. Sam really was a moron. I'm no fan of Jack "Aroo" either.

  • I really respect Nigel as a driver but you have to admit he was a bit of a drama queen

  • Yes, especially after races, very dramatic swoons etc

  • Indeed, but compare to Jean Alesi, it is a short draw :):):)

  • @fueldragster

I love Mansell as a kid, had the chance to meet him at Brands Hatch a couple of years ago, bit of a miserable bugger in RL sadly....

  • @fueldragster if you broke your back, neck god knows what else, then maybe you would react like that too

  • @danuk55555 So a broken neck and back makes you more sensitive to mild fires that may or may not exist?

  • @fueldragster No, but watching your mate Elio De Angelis burn to death in an F1 car probably would.

  • @danuk55555 De Angelis didn't burn to death, he was overcome with fumes and the lack of proper rescue at Paul Ricard didn't help either

  • @fueldragster Regardless of what killed him, he was trapped in a burning car and died. Mansell saw the whole thing.

  • @fueldragster lololol yes yes yes! he was great to watch and I agree with you 100%, he should of tried acting after racing who knows I think he would of been good enough to get an award or may be he could of shown some soccer players who to perform,

  • @fueldragster if oyu watch the full length of this video you see that hot water is spraying him. I would imagine after a crash and feeling a burning sensation I would panic and think it was fire. I would probably leap from my car like that. Not really drama but a pretty human reaction

  • @fueldragster I disagree. nigel has a long history of Back and Neck injuries. this crash aggrevated a horrific injury he suffered at phoenix. he lept out of the car but as soon as he touched the ground his legs gave out. If you read his autobiography you can understand better what i mean. However, Vitolo shouldn't have been in the race. Allowing amateurs into a pro racing event is a seriously bad idea and this crash is the reason why.

  • @chrismarkbicknell Not really an amateur. He ran CART for 6 years prior to this race, and then ran again in 1997. He wasn't a great driver, but not an amateur either.

  • @fueldragster its how he motivated himself he admitted that

  • @fueldragster I totaly agree!!!

  • I grew up watching Nascar in the south eastern U.S . I can see why you say racing is more boring than in the early days , @ least Nascar , its too cookie cutter . they've slowed the cars down every year for the last 20 years ! Ok now about F1 racing , RRaquello watch some in car video brother , just because the driving skill and machines needed in F1 make I.R.L & Nascar look like weenies racing soap box cars does'nt mean they suck . Try enjoying watching the best of whatever sport it may be.

  • does anyone know where there is a video showing how this crash actually happened ?

  • I haven't found one yet - think Vitolo whacked John Andretti, took off, and ended up atop Mansell's car - he neglected to slow down when coming into the pits - that's the best I can do!

Mansell would not have beaten the Penskes that day, but I think he would have kept them honest.

Driver of the day for that race - Bobby Rahal - coming from 28th to 3rd in a car he'd borrowed for qualifying from Roger Penske, because the Honda engine was so underpowered!

  • lol...i mean, as serious as it is, Mansell takes that Fireman OUT!

Its like an old school enemy he aint seen for years and had to fuck him up!!

  • shut up we taught you to put engines in the back we won it when you said it couldnt be done he was the greatest british driver he went over there won it in his first year

  • Putting the engines in the back of the cars ruined racing. It might make more sense from an engineering standpoint, but not from watching it as a sport. And all this aerodynamic stuff has ruined every form of racing from F1 to NASCAR. They end up spending more and more money but taking every bit of competitiveness and excitement out of motorsports.

  • booby unser finds every chance to discredit sam posey.such a jerk

  • dennis vitolo was such a sorry race car driver hes now become a slum lord he owns a trailer park in NC and dont run it much better then he did his driving career

  • shut up all you idiotic americans. mansell taught you how to race. he was a racer - how many americans can race properly? not many!!

    GENIUS...........

  • 0:01 I assume Paul Page had seen The Nightmare Before Christmas just before coming into the commentary box or something. Thought he was going to break into song.

  • who cares about mansell's personality? it's what he did in the car that won him so many fans all over the world

  • Mansell was Mr. Sunshine in the Indy Car series as long as things were going good (his first year), but when they weren't 100% his way, he went crying back to Europe. Where was that English stiff upper lip then? Vitolo was a dumbass here, but he sent Nigel whining back to F1, which was good for the Indy Car series. We have enough crybabies here without having to import them.

  • Mansell was always a crybaby, even in Europe.

  • Well, not being American, and not voting for Bush even if I could have, I must be pretty intelligent then. Certainly more intelligent than some some illiterate Geordie. And finally I am an F1 fan and have been for 35 years. I'll compare my knowledge of motor sport against yours any day of the week. Now go away little boy.

  • i am not from newcastle and have just moved from london and have followed f1 for years and i think i know alot more than you and even if i were a geordie you biased pig and if you know anythink about motorsport you will know mansell was one of the best you fool

  • It appears that when you were in London you failed to learn how to write basic grammar. And the word is 'anything' not 'anythink'. Mansell was a good driver but he was also a hard driver and his driving style caused numerous failures which he then moaned about. That was my point. It is correct and easily researchable, however I doubt you have the desire or intelligence to do so as you'd then have to apologise. Just be quiet, that will be sufficient. Kids nowadays ...

  • yeh back to f1 the best series in the world which he won btw when did an american last win that and he carnt b that bad he won this shity indy car where you drive in circels twice

  • Dennis Vitolo is a retard, and should never have been allowed in an Indy Car. This wasn't the first incident in his brief career.

  • ...the first 15 seconds of the commentators talking is EXACTLY what I would've said.

"What the hell? How did this happen? What the hell? Why is the car on the other car? What the hell?"

    ...well, paraphrasing. XD

  • no mansell was not injured!! he was ok.

  • wikipedia says he had a concussion. you can see him sitting motionless (knocked out?) at the beginning of the video. so injured, but not badly

  • No wonder, according to the scene descriptions given here; he had no chance to prepare for the hit...

  • I missed the 90's and racing in general. Can't wait to see all the Indy cars back there after so many years. I reckon the series these days is bland compared to 5 or so years ago. way better characters back in the 90's Mansell included, people don't understand all the fighting he had to do to win.

  • No, it was a methanol fire. My dad and I were in the Newman-Haas pits that year, and not only did Mansell himself say it was a methanol fire, but the crew and track workers said that as well. There is also an interview somewhere on youtube of Mansell talking about the incident.

  • Take it at face value, Mansell has a history of talking bollocks for most of his life and to me, as a Brit, it put me right off the man. He 'needed' to be seen as the underdog, the down trodden hero and even if this was in fact a methanol fire he cried wolf to many times. British GP sticks in mind where he was POSTIVE his car was stuck in top gear then they showed the in-car and it was up and down the gears like everyone else. Just a single of MANY examples. ;)

  • was mansell injured???

  • Mansell ! King of Kings !!

  • Mansell got his backside boiled by the coolant pouring down from the car above him.

  • no, it was a methanol fire

  • Where is the interview? That was the best part

  • lol it looks like the they are wrestling. The safety guy trys to throw in a headlock and then mansell reverses into a cradle!

  • The traditional way to put out a methanol fire, is with the Iron Shiek Camel Clutch!!!!

  • I bet if they showed other camera views of this we would know what happened

  • The Kmart guy? THE FUCKIN KMART GUY????

Thats Nigel fucking Mansell my friend and dont you forget it!

He is STILL - 15 years after retiring - the 4th most winning driver in Formula 1 history with 31 wins - behind only Senna, Prost and Schumacher!

  • Vitolos car knocked the plenum off of Nigels car and that ignited the methanol in the engine. He was burned on the back of his neck.

    Oil fire my *** !

  • Nice tackle by the track marshall

  • i still dont understand what happened to the kmart guy??

  • kmart guy???

    That´s Nigel Mansell man...

  • ok heres the whole thing nigel was slated to be at an autograph session but due to his comments the autograph session was put off

  • The joke when Mansell was in F1 was that he didn't have a chip on his shoulder, but had a chip on both shoulders.

  • F1's greatest drama queen. He loved to show off a slight bit of pain. All the old F1 heros knew about Mansell's dedicated drama.

  • This guy could have been paralyzed from the neck down when he was in F1 yet he chose to continue racing. You don't know what you're talking about.

  • I sit on the outside between 3 and 4 in the north vista and saw this whole thing. They were definetly under caution and Vitolo just ran up over Mansel. If I remember correctly they were even on the inside pit lane when this happened. I could see fire in the engine area of Mansels car, which is why he jumped out like that.

  • Dennis is now working in the private sector...Just to let you all know, he has been a personal friend of mine for 11 years. At least he made it to the IMS....Which one of you have done that??? nuff said!!

  • oh and by the way:

what is Denis V doing these days??

  • .26 funny. marshall saving mansell over himself. Pretty dedicated for a yank. And guess what. Mansell is not an old tit. hes quite old but not a tit. A legend. that was lucky with the footage. an ayrton senna moment.

  • mansell was such a drama queen, cant count the amount of times he got out of a mild crash limping like a wuss. someone once asked mario who his favourite actor was....his answer? nigel mansell....lol

  • mansell always was a dramatic old tart

  • To be fair he broke his neck twice, before F1

He made his debut with a broken neck for Lotus when they said he would never race again. He was a pretty brave driver as well.

  • fuck off he's god.

  • what actually happened to mansell?

  • If you mean why he got so fast out of the car so its because hes ass was burning, they use metanol in these cars you cant see it when it burns and that burned trought the seat hes ass.

  • He probably lies down afterwards so that no one can see the hole in the seat of his pants...

  • Nothing wrong with that, Indy cars are dangerous after all, a fair bit more than F1 if you ask me. He was a great driver and could move around like that without effecting his career, It just always pissed me of because he was such a whinger

  • I liked the way Mansell was doing his usally daft "im hurt" acting as he sat there with his head on his side in the cockpit... Then miraculously leaps out of the car when he relises its on fire. Teach him to pratt about? nah, he still kept doing it after EVERY crash..

  • Mansell realized that Indy Series is way too dangerous and he left.

  • Highly disagreed with you. If its way too dangerous, why did he won the 1993 Indycar Championship? Mansell is bold enough to me...

An F-1 driver taking Indycar like a cake in 93, the year after that was the opposite way around.

  • Like In Suzuka 87 when he crushed his vertebra?

  • Comment removed

  • LOL! I remember this. The end of Nigel's American honeymoon. How he carried on. Indy's always has a guy with more money than brains who can buy his way in and sometimes they hit a big star like Nigel. If no one gets hurt, we can laugh about it.

  • The fact is Vitolo should never have been allowed to compete in a race like the Indy 500, he made a mockery of the race. Completely and utterly incompetent.

  • I watching this race & seeing this crash. What a freaking bonehead that Vitolo, the damn caution flag had been out for a while when this took place. I mean Mansell didn't have the car to beat but it was a top 5 car that he could've brought home intact had it not been for this incident. Newman/Haas had the worst luck of any big dollar team I think ever at Indy, thats probably why they elected to stay in the Champcar Series after the split.

  • ah nascar dude ur just in a huff because indy cars are made in the UK, should know by now that most of the best inventions are british :P aww u yanks love ye indy car aswel...srry to spoil that for ya

  • hoho, Senna was loved by FIA? Check year 1989, 90. He was in fight with FIA. Nobody was prefer by FIA. b.t.w. Mansell had a lot of bad luck, but in 1992 he came back as superstar of formula 1

  • I have been a fan of Mansell since the early 80's.

I think he is one of the most unlucky drivers. Senna was loved by the FIA and for some reason Mansell always was the bad guy.

  • mansell is still racing!

check out gp masters (with murry walker commentating) next race south africa 21-23 September 2007!! mansell won the last series in 2006. awesome :)!!!

  • Nascarandamdrag I don't know where the hell are you from but in my opinion Nigel was one of the greatest, bravest, and the quickest racedriver in the world. Everybody should respect him, even you!

  • well ok , you have a point that he is one of the best, but i hate rookies like Dennis Vitolo , actully, i love drivers like nigel and i don't hate british born drivers, but, i'll fuck up Dennis Vitolo

    for that

  • yeah ok!!! sure....your a typical asshole...go out and live on your own and stop sponging off your parents..

  • I was in L stand, right ion front of it and saw the whole thing unfold. There were a couple cars running through the warm-up lane, headed for the pits. Vitolo came rushing up behind them and just couldn't slow down in time, running over the back wheel of another car, got ariborne and landed on top of Mansell's car.

  • fuckin rookies

  • Methanol is very dangerous, one of the big reasons they got rid if it. It burns VERY hot and you cant see it.

  • "Methanol is very dangerous, one of the big reasons they got rid if it. It burns VERY hot and you cant see it." My model car uses a percentage of it can't say it's anywhere near as combustible as petrol. You have to take a naked flame to it to get it light. Petrol I find ignites by its vapour alone, explosively so!

  • Just a real quick note: Methanol is safer from a flame (it burns with less heat) standpoint (it is harder to ignite than petrol). Gasoline is FAR MORE DANGEROUS/EXPLOSIVE. The only reason the series doesn't currently use it is SOLELY because the IRL went to a 'green' movement and uses an ethnaol hybrid. It had NOTHING to do with why it was discontinued -- the dangerousness of it. Try again.
