satvarmac, steel has 6 times the tensile strength of aluminum. I t all depends on how it is designed. A home made crane will almost always be better than a commercial one, even if it is made out of aluminum.
I designed and built a custom servo driven follow focus for a DSLR camera mounted to a crane. It is unique because it allows remote focusing of any DSLR camera mounted to a crane or anywhere within 6 feet of the camera. A rotating knob moves the servo wheel which is spring regulated and pressed against the camera focus dial.
If you use the mike in your camera, a slight servo sound is heard. Most videographers would use a separate boom mike or do an audio dub.

Curious does it add audio noise?

@cbizzyr I do not have plans at this time, just technical drawings of my prototype.

it shakes a lot when you stop moving!

korg01w all cranes do that. Normally you edit out that movement.

@jeffgrave not all cranes do this, here it is the steel flexing. aluminum works much better.
My diy crane made out of aluminum does not wobble like that!

@jeffgrave I know that steel is much stronger, only aluminum is much much stiffer or more rigid.
Maybe it isn't quite balanced?
I hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way, this build is great. I like the remote follow focus alot!

This is a prototype and is NOT for sale. Only commercial design/investment companies should contact me for more information.
