I have to disagree with the post by leafkas. The best Vietnam movie is "The Boys of Company C." Because every Nam vet I've asked, including my godfather, say "The Boys of Company C," was the most realistic. If you want to know the Vietnam experience watch that movie. Apocalypse Now is just Hollywood. The film is good but it's actually a film adaptation of the Joseph Conrad Book " Heart of Darkness." The Marlon Brando quote "The horror! The horror!" Is the most famous motif from the book.

A movie that I do like that broke the mold of the disturbed and murderous Vietnam Veteran film is Rambo (yes I consider that a Vietnam movie). My hat was off to Stallone who demanded a rewrite so the main character didn't kill anyone. He said, "these guys have already been trashed enough and I don't want to be part of anything that does that."
vietnam war movies are cool but they need to make a film from the perpective of a south vietnamese, even though america was in vietnam, most of the battles and skirmishes were fought with ARVN soldiers from the beginning 1954 to the very bitter end in 1975

He was a helicopter door gunner on a huwee, and on his second tour, he did seard and destroy mission, he did "HALOs" High-Altitude-Low-Opening. @MRszwajkowski It is a lot of patriotism going around.. The characters are shallow- there are no conflicts of interest, no moral dilemmas between the characters. It seems like a typical depiction of black (VC) and white (USA). In Platoon you have tremendous characters that are in a big conflict of interest and moral values. Not to mention the themes that were traumatizing the USA of 60's that are mentioned in this one movie- racial tension, rich-poor, envy, american holocaust, VC brutality, ecc

I don't know about the best but "Hamburger Hill" and "We Were Soldiers" are the scariest and based on actual events. Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Deer Hunter, are little bit on the Hollywood side and always have some hidden liberal message, good movies but Hollywood. Oh yeah, 84 Charile Mopic is another good one if you can find it. 11c.

Yeah, it's as good as Vietnam movies ever get.
It's not as tragic as Deer Hunter, Hollywoodized as Apocalypse Now or over-the-top as Full Metal Jacket.
It's got the most memorable characters ever. I rank it as the best followed by Hamburger Hill, In Country, Born on the Fourth of July & We Were Soldiers.
I, being a guy, who on rare occasions cries at these movies or have to distance myself since they're very true to reality actually felt sorry for the men in Hamburger Hill

I don't know man. I thought it sucked for the main guy (Dylan McDermott) who's girlfriend left him the recording & was breaking up with him because she had no clue when he was going to get back.
I just about cried at that scene. Usually, I can handle depressing subject matter and just like "That stinks" but I felt so sorry for that guy. I was like "That sucks!"

For me #1 stands for Platoon- it is the most realistic depiction of the war in Vietnam.

#6- We were soldiers- great action scenes and realistic weapons at all- ¨there is no message, it is just a movie about a big battle in Vietnam.

@catherinefan32 Very very very wise. We were soldiers is probabbly the better most relistic version. I live with a veitnam vet myself actualy. He was a helicopter door gunner on a huwee, and on his second tour, he did seard and destroy mission, he did "HALOs" High-Altitude-Low-Opening. The vet I know says "We were soldiers" looks most relistic.
And platoon sucked too. It contained to much hollywood in it if you know what I mean.

Being there is the best movie. Our mission: Was to search and destroy.
Problem was that we couldn't kill them fast enough because they had over 300,000 entering their army each year and there's no way to kill that many short of nukes.
We need a complete new strategy for Afghanistan and it has to be just as brutal.
Problem is that our friggen politicians would just like to stretch everything because it is so profitable. Taliban has 20k fighters and we can't handle them? Give me a break.
