  • Susana1027- so right! He does it all on this song (and all his others!) Amazing. True epic stuff!

  • fuck tat mansound is shit, stop posting!!!!!

  • did u know billy joel dated ell mac phearson? that what the song was bout!

  • I've been listening this album again, he was definitely at his best vocally that year. He should have won over Micheal Jackson for best vocalist that year.

  • @pianodannmarr Agreed. Billy is a very underrated singer. He should have easily won over Michael Jackson.

  • An absolute genius! He writes, he performs, and he sings - and he does them all excellently. What more could you want or have in a musician?

  • Greatness

  • it was an homage to ludwig not a ripp off

  • What an incredible talent he is!

  • that is one beautiful song.

  • The key change where he goes into the chorus brings tears to my eyes. He was absolutely superb that night........Billy Joel you are the nuts

  • Because he ripped off Beethoven.

  • Ripped off Beethoven??? Are you on this planet ??? he complimented Beethoven into this song, and credited him too. Where do you get off claiming someone as talented as Billy Joel is 'ripping off' Beethoven. So what original songs have you written then mate???

    Mikey xx

  • i wish he would have liberty play with him again he was the shit.

and yeah the clasical piece is sonata pethetique 2nd movement. and there both sick pieces.

and i just wanna say the sax player for his band is a beast of a player too. best show ive ever been to was deffinitely one of the many billy joel concerts.

  • Is the sax player Mark Rivera - he realy rocks.

    Mikey xx

  • This is one of Billy Joel's best songs.

Although the chourus of the song is stolen from a classical music piece.

  • I have to say this, for the record:

    Christy Brinkley wrecked Billy Joel.

    Damn that bitch.

  • Sorry to split hairs on the date of this show but it was from 1984. The actress Torrey DeVitto was born on 8th June, 1984 and her dad Liberty was on drums and was a long time member of Billy's band then and was waiting on news to become a father that night, and Billy kept asking for any updates on her arrival during the show.

  • Do you have any more footage from billys innocent man tour

  • Fantastic memories of summer '85...

  • I have the full audio recording of this..he was in amazing voice that night!

  • Sorry but his voice is a bit flat here. He is struggling to pitch the notes correctly.

  • What are you talking about? Do you mean him "struggling" with the notes during the last chorus?

I bet you couldn't reach that high C!

Stop nagging if you couldn't do it better!

  • i believe that's a B flat. just saying.

  • o nevermind sorry, that is a c, the first chorus is a b-flat.

  • wrong, too.

The first choruses have g as the highest tone (in Fmajor), and the third chorus in Bb Major has c as the highest tone.

  • pretty sure the first 2 choruses are in Aflat major... i dont have perfect pitch so i dont know for sure.

  • Sorry, hcpiano1, but you're wrong.

The verses are in A major, the first two choruses in Fmajor and the last one in BbMajor. That's a fact, I do have the sheet music and checked this video by playing it at the same time on a keyboard.

  • been looking for this song, i love this song thank u for posting this. i learned that a part of the song is actually a part beethoven's 9th symphony?

  • It's Pathetique Sonata No. 8

  • 誰かはっぴ着てんじゃん。

  • そだね

  • I love this song !

  • wow, thanks 4 posting. Vocals are a little pitchy :(

  • this is, without a doubt, the greatest song ever. i love this song so damn much. And that saxiphone part is too nice. i wish i was around back then just to witness this performence

  • My thoughts exactly. Billy also performed this at his last concert at Shea, in the original key, and it sounded great. Billy's the man!

  • i agree with margblease....Im going to the Shea show on the 18th and paid through the nose on Stubhub, but would be happy if this were the only song played...let's get the word out!!

  • No, he has to play Through the Long Night. I have never heard that song live and it's my favorite song period.

  • Although he did rehearse it at Hershey he didn't perform it for that concert which was awesome. I, too, was hoping they'd do it. So you may be in luck hearing it at Shea playing!

  • salamat for posting this video, i really love this song.

  • has any 1 got more an innocent man album on them eg easy money? theres some classics on there why isnt an innocentman featured?

  • From Spain: Thanks for this song.

    5 Stars.

  • Incredible! How I wish he'd sing it in concert!

  • i just went to a show on June 13 and he did this song. It was by far the best performance of the night

  • You are soooo lucky! I would pay just to hear him do this song. It's been, what, 9 years? I think the last time (before 6/13) was at the millenium concert. I really hope he does it on July 3, cuz I'll be there--right next to the stage!

  • The first time I saw Billy in concert was during his Innocent Man Tour in June of 1984 at Madison Square Garden. I even remember how he started off this song, talking about highschool days and being at the Prom. I have seen Billy in concert 9x and even waited on line 17 hours to meet him at Tower Records in Manhattan. He was signing his Millennium concert cd. I guess one could say I'm a fan.

Thanks so much for posting the video....

  • have seen the great man 3 times, i would like to think this clip is from the wembley london england gig which i am trying to obtain in full, any helpers out there

  • I have a copy of the wembley show on vhs, but it is a 2nd generation and if I were to copy it, I am afraid it would be poor quality. Try a friend in the UK...that's where I got mine.

  • Hi there, did you ever get to obtain the full gig?.If not,i have this as a 1st generation vhs recording, and i'm sure its still in good shape.

  • One of Billy Joel's best songs. And yeah the chorus has the same melody as Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata

  • Is this based on a Beethoven hit?

  • Oh I love this song. Thank you for posting it. I saw the the show on TV back then in 83. One of the many brilliant songs he has made. thank you once again. Bring back memories.

  • The Innocent Man album was a tribute to the mid-60's - Easy Money (James Brown), Uptown Girl (4 Seasons), Tell Her About It (Supremes), etc. This Night fits right in - a beautiful song!!

  • Oh thanks so much for this gorgeous little gem...this is the sexiest, most romantic Billy Joel song ever...one of my faves:) "sigh"

  • Beethoven, Billy Joel and a mean saxophonist! What more could a girl want!

    Thankyou for uploading this

    Jxxx

  • thank you so much for that, this is my favorite Billy Joel song. he's sooooo talented, one day I will see him in concert!

  • I think we're talking about the same piece. Opus thirteen, Sonata in c minor, no. 8. Also known as, Pathetique. I'll have to listen to it again. I play alot of classical music and my mom told me she thought it sounded similar to the piece I was playing.

  • This song has portions that are based off of a Beethoven song called Pathetique. It's pretty amazing how he incorporated all the different sounds and made it blend.

  • actually the chorus is directly taken from beethoven's piano sonata no 8 in C minor

  • Innocent Man, was an awesome album. Loaded with some great hits....rare, nowadays, to find an album that has a good selection, instead of 3 good songs, and 7 worthless tunes.

  • This was my husband's and my song played at our wedding as I walked to the alter. I love this song! :)

  • The entire "2000 Years" album was overdubbed because, vocally, Billy wasn't that great - look at "Italian Restaurant" and "Fire" on here, you'll notice a big difference.

  • wow he had trouble singing it 24 years ago... i can't imagine him trying to sing that now... though he seemed to do fine on the millennium concert album.

  • Yeah he does seems to stuggle a bit at the end when it goes up a few octaves and seems to be forcing it a little but maybe with the brass section playing, he was having trouble hearing his own voice, a bit like how we shout when wearing headphones so we can hear ourselves. Nowadays they sometimes wear earpieces to get over that problem.

  • "it goes up a few octaves"?

octaves is a little much, don't you agree?

  • He did fine on the millennium concert because he sang it in a lower key. The highest note he has to hit here is a C, but the highest note he hits in MC is a Bb. In fact, if you listen to the 12 gardens album, you'll find that many songs are in a lower key (Piano Man goes from C->B) (My Life D->Db). I think he had his whole piano tuned down half a key, so he could play the same notes, but sing lower.

  • exactly right

  • I'm pretty sure he uses an E-Piano nowadays. That way, he can transpose any song in any key

  • You don't think Billy Joel knows how to transpose his own songs and just play them in a different key? WOW!

  • He has an electric piano inside of a grand piano shell. That way all he has to do is hit a button and play the same keys as he used to, just different notes come out (I'm not saying he can't transpose his own songs, I'm just saying, from what I've heard, he doesn't).
