Sorry. We wont repair wheels that have damage extending into the area where the tire bead seats. Too much risk for such little reward. Your life is worth more than the cost of a rim. But you are right in saying that welding a lip is far more durable than filler. Be safe
Good wheel shops weld damage and only use bondo in the refinishing process for minor nicks. If you weld a wheel it has to be done by a certified welder or you can be held liable for injury. The shop i work at wont repair wheels that have gouges be
Warning! it's not worth it to repair the wheel. If you don't do it right, you can weaken the metal and you could have a blow out on the highway. You can wreck your car and loose everything to save a few bucks.
Aluminum wont glow when hot in direct light, It will discolor when it gets so hot that I becomes brittle upon cooling. This is what I mean by saying someone can get into some serious trouble doing this at home. I fabricate in aluminum all day long at work. This metal is HIGHLY UNFORGIVING. You need to warn viewers about this.
@fatqwert200 well they looked like a tungsten rod form that video i really couldnt tell i didnt have me glasses on but their is a difference between tig rods and filler rods but this video is showing people how to fix cracked rims which if you have a cracked aluminum alloy rim its should be replaced not repaired not everyone understands metallurgy enough and are certified in the field to fix their own rims.
I am looking to get a set of Ford Focus SVT wheels from someone for $100, he has informed me that 3 of them are in perfect condition (his son swapped them out for custom wheels) but one has some damage on the inside of the wheel, from driving over a bridge that has a bad lowering mechanism (the county is out there working on it once a damn month) so he said it has a small dent inside it... is that repairable or should I just scrap that one and try to get a replacement?
Hey I just bought some used rims today, and they seemed alright until I got home and noticed a VERY slight wobble when it's rolled on the carpet. Theres no tire on it. Theres no visible dammage, and you can't feel there the damage is either. Can I still use them without getting them repaired?
@lolley1100 It is likely bent, you can use it if it holds air, but it is going to vibrate like crazy. You can usually get a bent wheel repaired locally for 100-150 dollars. Best of luck.
@91ludesit Nah, it was just the carpet i rolled it on that made them look like they were wobbly i guess...I got wheels on them 4 days ago and had them at 145 mph with no problems.
@dereklacy in the box there is a stainless steel abrader, you drag that through the bead of technoweld to break the surface tension and ensure the bond with the material.
I'll do it for $50.....No weld, no bondo no filler at all and if you can tell me where the damage was after I'm done it's free. The job above would go alot faster with one change. (an angle grinder and sctoch brite sanding disc) it wont digg into the metal or jump like a dremal......Not takin anything away from this guy, just trying to make it easier for anyone trying to do this at home.
Does the repair material have the ability to polish out for polished wheels? I know that some shops do a weld process to repair wheels, but I'm not sure of the proper materials.
Good question! Yes they can be powdercoated, that is the whole reason I did it this way. In fact one of them was powdercoated a second time, and they have held up for 2 years now. I think the fix was well worth the money and time I invested.
@91ludesit from expirience dont powder coat a heat treated wheel their isnt alot of them on the market yet its new but powder coating a heat treated wheel will make it 10 times as brittle as a standard wheel so check with your wheel manufacturer first
@chezbalz Instead of showing everybody your ignorance and poor grammar skills, you could have made the proper recommendation. Oh wait trolls have nothing but ignorance.
@Mega251181 Yea I suppose, but they've been on for over a year and through 2 sets of tires. Potholes, and my extremely stiff suspension without issue.
Ah I see, well it was the backside, which you won't see anyway. Once they were sand blasted the minor scratches in the paint weren't noticeable since it was gone LOL.
what if you have polished lipped rims? won' t the place where you bonded be different than the rest of the original paint. it's a good job but if you are painting them afterwards but for polishing what is the scenario?
@rneoman I would suggest letting a professional look at a polished lip, usually in that case they grind the marks out, and then grind the lip all the way around to match.
You could also have the sense of acomplishment of doing it yourself for under 60. Also bet thats 135 per wheel, I did 3 wheels for the cost of the techno-weld and the torch.
you can also just use a orbital sander with 320 grit and grind the lip of the entire rim, then paint. Saves you the $35 on gas and whatever on the brasing. You can also sand all wheels including steel and magnesium
hy first sorry for my bad english ... i want to know if it possible to give the right (angle) to my mag becauz i bought this rims from a guy y know but he he have do a lot of hand brake with and they are not bent but jost / can i do something or put it in garbage??
I am not sure I fully understand the question, but the material I use here will not bond to mag wheels. You can use a traditional welder for mag wheels, and then grind them back to shape the same way.
mine have graphite and something els but its not aluminum ( they feel like stones and there heavy as fuck) but would this type of thing still work. i would paint them so not matching is not a problem thanks
This will work on most metal alloys. However it might not work on your wheels. On the same page that technoweld is available from my link you will find a product called pyro putty. That is like epoxy on steroids and cures harder than steel. It will bond to anything and you can grind it to shape.
if you dont want to repair the wheel yourself go to rimspec.com for wheel repair or rim repair service
