  • who is this guy? i need to know

  • @marcuspinson

He's this guy. His entire YouTube channel is gramophone videos and one video of this song in his living room.

  • @briankdrag whats his channel's name

  • he lays down a mean hurdy gurdy

  • Sounds like a bagpipe

  • O.o The ninja took his monkey! That's why he doesn't have one...

  • I saw this instrument in the credits of COD4, and I'm like screw it. I wanna know what it is.

  • I feel like I wanna dance around with a big muk of beer

  • No monkey?

  • You rub me the wrong way when you talk. Just play damn it!!

  • Probably I'm the only one, but what the hell... Eluveitie brought me here :D

  • @kozagong

ur not alone, they brought me here to xD

  • @kozagong haha me too!

  • kozagong, dont worry Eluveitie brought me here too...

  • @kozagong yyoure not alone, i wondered what the fuck that thing was called XD

    surprisingly it sounds awesome

  • @kozagong ME TOO

  • He may not have a monkey, but he has a NINJA!!!!

  • sounds like a bagpipe and a violin mixed

  • @LlamaNomaNinja It is =D

  • Very nice!

  • 0:22 NINJA!

  • This is the Zodiac speaking...

  • "NO, I do NOT have a monkey!" - best ever!!!! :)

  • 1:20, where stuff starts to happen.

  • @ 00:28, it looked like he did have a monkey.

  • Hellfire! That thang is the Devil's work! When he started playin, me legs started a dancing one of them gypsy dances (ones that cause your belly to a'shakin!) and poor Claude t'was in the kitchen and she commenced to quakin and quivering and started to speakin in tongue. Course she t'was born without one but thats niether here nor there. What I gots to say is RUN! GITS YOURSELF OUTTA HERE! BEFORE THIS DEVIL TAKES YOUR SOUL! Sob... It's too lates fur me... I's iddicted...

  • my ears are bleeding...! Arrrrgggghhhh....

  • Great!

  • I find the droning makes it sound almost like it'd be at home in an Indian classical music ensemble. Lovely sound though.

  • does anyone know the name of the musician?

  • @channanator his name is gurdy hurdy

  • This is a cross between a mandolin and a bagpipe! When I first heard one of these I seriously thought it was a wind instrument, that the cranking somehow blew air over pipes or something. I can see doing Highland dancing to this. The drone, the rather ornate Celtic-sounding tune on top.

  • Some themes sound almost Scandinavian!

Then again we do have bordune instruments that are somewhat related like the Key Fiddle (Sweden) and Hardanger Fiddle (Norway).

    Really nice!

  • no ninjas are harmed making this video.

  • i need to get one of these things for LARP :D that would be awesome :P

  • The Hurdy Gurdy is so cool!!!! XD I need one!!!

  • One of my all time favorite instruments!

  • I reckon this would sound even better with a bit of bodhran behind it.

  • A hurdy gurdy!

  • Where Guitar Hero came from.

  • hmmm, sounds alot like a bagpipe. i half expected it to sound way different than that

  • It's good music, how come no one here seems to respect it?

  • Hahahahahahaha

    I'll be straight forward.

I have no respect for this music whatsoever. It kind of seems like a joke to me.

    Hahahahahaha

  • @fffoooREVeeerrr What is your problem, the man or the instrument?

  • @Silverthunder100 I'm not sure. All I know is it just makes me laugh. I'm not a bitch or anything, I just don't respect this music :/

  • @fffoooREVeeerrr You're ignorant then. The music played on a hurdy gurdy is HARD to produce. Even SIMPLE songs like playing twinkle twinkle little star can be difficult. Plus, it's not meant to sound all whimsical like a flute or violin. It's a haunting instrument that emits haunting sounds.

FYI; a lot of the new hiphop songs they've mimicked the sounds of hurdy gurdys in their own music. (usually sounds more technologically based.) (1/2)

  • @fffoooREVeeerrr If you like celtic music, they use hurdy gurdys a LOT; especially with older folk-songs since the hurdy gurdy has been around for centuries. They don't always let the hurdy gurdy play the main melody (unless they're looking for that specific sound) usually they're in the background of the song. =p

Don't respect this music??? Alright. That's cool. To each their own. Just remember, hurdy gurdys are used a lot more than you think.

  • @Minxies that's probably why I don't like this, because I don't listen to hip-hop and stuff :/

And yeah, I am ignorant. I get that a lot.

  • @fffoooREVeeerrr Now to not care for this music is one thing, but to not respect it? It's a unique sound and the man is playing it so skillfully. How can you not respect that?

Though in my opinion it's a beautiful instrument and makes me proud of my Celtic heritage!

  • @fffoooREVeeerrr You should lookj into more music then. You'd be surprised, there might be at least one or two songs you like =p

  • He should fire the kazoo player from his band.

  • This music is pure trance!!!!

  • who is this joker

  • Ninja FAIL! I saw him.

  • Impressive instrument very bitter musician :(

  • is he blind??

  • Is it supposed to buzz like that or is one of the ninjas playing a kazoo?

PS: He does have a monkey. But he's a ninja too.

  • hurrrrdy gurrrrrdy What a fucking stupid name lol.

  • i swear this guy could say anything and everybody would just hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • holy shit were can i get one of those awseome fucking istuments!!!

  • @sammo314 hurdygurdy com (put in dots at the blank space) That should answer more questions you might have. :)

  • The sounds remember me a something like Bagpipes !!! this is a fucking different instrument , Eluveitie use this !

  • @DLidersBand thats because of the low continuous hum with high wailing music

  • @MourningStar13666 Tanks man , this is istrument is so nice !!! and so different

  • Why do people insist on doing that clapping shit

  • Whay can't that guy shut the hell up and just play the bloody thing?

  • The Hurdy Gurdy is the only instrument known to attract ninja, in fact they are mesmerized by it's sound, so much so, that they'll follow any HG player around with microphones and amplifiers hoping for just a glimmer of it's magical sound.

  • @scada99 I saw before a few days while I was in Boston someone who was playing a hurdy gurdy and he told me that it's French. So...can you tell me what the hell it has to do with ninjas?

  • @MrRip1997

    You're kidding, right?

  • @obglobgablob No! Why should I do that?

  • @MrRip1997

Ah, I see. I just checked your profile and saw that you're Greek. You probably didn't pick up on it. But the guy you replied to was joking. So when you responded seriously, that's why I asked if you were kidding around.

  • @obglobgablob Yes I am Greek. So?

  • @MrRip1997

Buddy are you trying to troll me or are you really this slow on the uptake? Because I can tell you now I'm not about to lose patients with you just for being an idiot.

  • @obglobgablob Well sorry if I don't get all the phrasal verbs that US have. Troll ya? I have better things to do. Just tell me something serious. Like....answer my question. Sorry if I gave such impression

  • @MrRip1997

You don't have to appologise for anything. If anything I'm the one in the wrong here for not looking sooner.

Just go back over what I said before. The point I was trying to make (albeit not very well) was that I think the reason you didn't get scada99's joke was because you're not a native of an English speaking country. So you may not be as familiar with the humour and the pattern of speech/language that he was using. But no harm done.

Now lets all just enjoy some hurdy gurdy.

  • @obglobgablob Woewoewoe.....wait! What the hell? Oh, damn it. Dude there is a mistake here! I wanted to write my comment to another guy! Why does it appear at scada99? i had understood his/her joke. Well about the thing you said about the communication of mine, with the language....well i speak very well English but what you said for the humor.....hmm, maybe yes! :p Thanks a lot anyway

  • @MrRip1997

Forget it. Just listen to some hurdy gurdy.

  • @obglobgablob Fuck it, no one got it. So I will do as you say

  • @MrRip1997

That's the spirit. Considering that all we came here to do was listen to some hurdy gurdy. I think things got a little out of hand.

  • @scada99 thats why i love it

  • @scada99 He's the Ninjacatcher from hammeln xD

  • I've never seen a microphone ninja before!!!! WICKED!! =D

  • Yup! House is precisely why I looked this one up! Interesting, to say the least!

  • Hurdy Gurdy Hero!

  • hurdy gurdy durpy hurdy flurdy rurdly durdly

  • @seeriktus derpy snerpy herpy dooooOOOoO

  • sounds like vikings

  • wow what an awesome sound.

  • great name! Hurdy Gurdy lol only thing better is the sound it makes!

    I would love one.

Also seems like a cool guy

  • he's great!

  • Audience clapping wildly out of time

  • @sharperguy

Audiences ALWAYS clap ahead of the beat. I think it's a rule or something.

  • @MrFirstwow It's a technique for the Hurdy Gurdy by keeping rhythm by turning the handle/wheel faster.

  • I looked this up because of a recent episode of Dr. House where he was in a hotel room with a prostitute who could play the Hurdy Gurdy. Having never heard of the instrument before I was compelled to look it up!

And what an awesome video I did find. Cool instrument talented musician and a microphone ninja.

  • @ThePopeAndy That is PRECISELY the same reason I looked it up too.

I wonder if this guy knows Freebird...

  • @enisylo haha... House right?

  • LOL.

    Does "FF" stand for "FurFright"?

If so, I totally saw you there. :p

    If not, ignore me. <:

  • I need me one of these

  • @MrFirstwow the hurdy gurdy

  • what are those songs called?

  • Music starts at 1:20, finish it at 1:45

  • Music starts at 1:20

  • The ninja repaired his mistake.

  • Ninja's ...ninja's everywhere..

  • Wow this is interesting. but does anybody know what the instrument is called that is a box and it has a crank on its side? it might be similar to this

  • @abe1sapien

That is called a hurdy gurdy also. I was just educating myself on Wikipedia (Gods bless Wikipedia!) and they say, "In the eighteenth century the term hurdy gurdy was also applied to a small, portable "barrel organ" (a cranked box instrument with a number of organ pipes, a bellows and a barrel with pins that rotated and programmed the tunes) that was frequently played by poor buskers (street musicians)" Just learned recently that the instrument in this video is also a hurdy gurdy.

  • 9 people apparently don't like ninjas

Ninjas aside, this guy plays like a BOSS

  • SOMEBODY MAKE HURDY GURDY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This man looks like Lenin...who can play a bitchin' sweet hurdy gurdy!

  • Really nice. I bought a gurdy from Neil Brook and its so bad it cant be played. Just saving up now to get a good one and try to copy this guy.

  • @rouseg7 This guy refused my offer to make good his perceived problems and subsequently bought another gurdy from me !.He has apparently ordered one from another maker. I wish the maker the best of luck with this offensive pain in the neck . If you want to know more about him, just check out the style of his comments on other Youtube clips.

  • i thought the dude was about to get fuckin' robbed lol.

  • There's actually 10 ninjas in this whole video. Only one is in training though.

  • Who needs a monkey when you have a ninja?

  • i would crush this guy in hurdy gurdy hero any day

  • was that a fuckin ninja?

  • Not so good at playing.

  • So it's just a stringed bagpipe?

  • Awesome instrument!... Sound Quality is amazing too.... what were you using to record?

  • So the Scotts built the pyramids. Music is awesome.

  • least stealthy ninja ever

  • whoa...where did that melody come from? The constant switching between major third and minor third from the drone is tripping me out.

  • @Spaztronthemusicman That's actually a relatively common occurrence in old european folk music. It essentially switches between different scales in the same key multiple times in the course of a song. It's a way to give a sense of progression without actually changing chords or keys. The composer Bartok based a lot of his style on this practice.

  • Sounds actually really nice, but what is that sound that starts at 1:50? Did it broke there?

  • @DonnyRedNr1 I think it's called a "buzzing bridge" or something similar. It's supposed ot sound like that. Cool, huh?

  • @trombonejuggle

reminds of those mini vuvuzelas that sounded like ducks :P

  • @DonnyRedNr1 it's called a chanter. It does that when you hit a certain note or you turn it on...dunno exactly how that works but I do know what it's called and what it does XD

  • @RenaAngel

aright thanks then xD. That "feature" would still be the main reason why I wouldnt get that instrument :P

  • @RenaAngel It's done with a kind of flick of the wrist in the turning action of the wheel. It slightly speeds up the wheel causing a little loose part of the comb underneath the trompette string (the highest sounding drone) called the "chien" (literally "dog") to tap or vibrate against the soundboard.

  • this is cool as shit

  • Awesome! Gotta get me one of these.

  • love the first piece, when he hits a certain note it sounds so trippy to me :O

  • @achemie The brown note

  • @Poopaskull lol are you being serious, or you talking about the thign that makes you shit :P

  • @achemie The one that makes you poop your pants ;)

  • Comment removed

  • sounds like bagpipes.

  • @Blarghasaur No no no no, no no no, Sounds AMAZING :o I want one of them, It almost sounds like egypt music :D

  • He was there this year XD

  • Does anyone know who this is? i´d like to hear more of his artistic playing!

  • Wow- he's a really good hurdy gurdy player. Makes me feel like I'm in the 1600's.

  • Some sort of violin bagpipe.

  • whear can i buy one please tell me they sound so cool

  • @DaddyFunkful You need to either look online or go to finland either way its gonna cost you around $4000

  • love this man's patter i CSWPNTBISTBDMWRTWFF

  • "You spend 90% of your time tuning the instrument and the other 10% of your time playing it out of tune"

    I lol'd.

  • OH MY GOD THIS GUY HAS NINJAS FOR ASSISTANTS

  • Have you ever thought of getting one ? (a monkey)

  • I love these folk tunes.

  • Anna from Eluveitie plays it so much better :O

  • whats with the microphone ninja

  • stage crews at folk festivals often have very short periods of time to set up for each act, so they often work around the performer as she or he begins to introduce the set.

  • @GhettoBlaster100 The microphone is, obviously, to amplify the sound. The hurdy gurdy is an acoustic insturument.

  • @Silverthunder100 i said whats with the ninja

  • @GhettoBlaster100 Who gives a shit, It's a ninja.

  • genial

  • microphone ninja!

  • YES! haha

  • lol

  • sounds a bit bag-pipish...

  • It does but that's just because it's a droning instrument...meaning it has a droning character similar to that of a bagpipe.

  • that's because of the "drone strings" on the instrument.

  • This would be great with a bodhran.

  • @dadinck listen to Eluveitie. it's a metal band that plays both Hurdy gurdy and bodhran, in addition to Celtic whistles and fiddles.

  • Love the first song!!!

  • that will do for vaudeville LOL!

  • He needs a monkey

  • No, he doesn't have a monkey haha so funny and great!

  • impressive =D

  • What beautiful music!

  • Where do I buy such a beautiful instrument!!

  • Every1 who seems to ever encounterd a hurdy gurdy seems obsessed by it and they should be.

  • He is one awesome hurdy-gurdy man.

  • what ppl are talking about? ninja and digeridos? this is hurdy gurdy nothing! else matter!

    crazy instrument btw

  • the ninja is because at about 0:25 a stagehand/roadie-type person comes on stage, knocks his mic of the stand then replaces it - for some reason he/she is dressed up in black ninja gear!

  • but now, consider:

    - there is a gudy gurdy, which is awesome (in fact, there is a hurdy gurdy player making jokes about hurdy gurdies, raising the awesomeness even further).

    - there is a ninja, which is awesome

    - it makes people think of didgeridoos (more awesomeness) and bagpipes (even more horrible awesomeness).

This pretty much demonstrates how a ninja with a hurdy gurdy would blow any awesomeness-meter through the roof!

  • @BubblefishOfTrem Bagpipes>Didgeridoos. Have someone play Amazing Grace on the bagpipes and I'll be balling like a baby. Got more Scott blood in me than I know. lol
