Course she t'was born without one but thats niether here nor there. What I gots to say is RUN! GITS YOURSELF OUTTA HERE! BEFORE THIS DEVIL TAKES YOUR SOUL! Sob... It's too lates fur me... I's iddicted...
This is a cross between a mandolin and a bagpipe! When I first heard one of these I seriously thought it was a wind instrument, that the cranking somehow blew air over pipes or something. I can see doing Highland dancing to this. The drone, the rather ornate Celtic-sounding tune on top.
@fffoooREVeeerrr You're ignorant then. The music played on a hurdy gurdy is HARD to produce. Even SIMPLE songs like playing twinkle twinkle little star can be difficult. Plus, it's not meant to sound all whimsical like a flute or violin. It's a haunting instrument that emits haunting sounds.
FYI; a lot of the new hiphop songs they've mimicked the sounds of hurdy gurdys in their own music. (usually sounds more technologically based.) (1/2)
@fffoooREVeeerrr If you like celtic music, they use hurdy gurdys a LOT; especially with older folk-songs since the hurdy gurdy has been around for centuries. They don't always let the hurdy gurdy play the main melody (unless they're looking for that specific sound) usually they're in the background of the song. =p
Don't respect this music??? Alright. That's cool. To each their own. Just remember, hurdy gurdys are used a lot more than you think.
@fffoooREVeeerrr Now to not care for this music is one thing, but to not respect it? It's a unique sound and the man is playing it so skillfully. How can you not respect that?
Though in my opinion it's a beautiful instrument and makes me proud of my Celtic heritage!
The Hurdy Gurdy is the only instrument known to attract ninja, in fact they are mesmerized by it's sound, so much so, that they'll follow any HG player around with microphones and amplifiers hoping for just a glimmer of it's magical sound.
@scada99 I saw before a few days while I was in Boston someone who was playing a hurdy gurdy and he told me that it's French. So...can you tell me what the hell it has to do with ninjas?
Ah, I see. I just checked your profile and saw that you're Greek. You probably didn't pick up on it. But the guy you replied to was joking. So when you responded seriously, that's why I asked if you were kidding around.

@obglobgablob Well sorry if I don't get all the phrasal verbs that US have. Troll ya? I have better things to do. Just tell me something serious. Like....answer my question. Sorry if I gave such impression
You don't have to appologise for anything. If anything I'm the one in the wrong here for not looking sooner.
Just go back over what I said before. The point I was trying to make (albeit not very well) was that I think the reason you didn't get scada99's joke was because you're not a native of an English speaking country. So you may not be as familiar with the humour and the pattern of speech/language that he was using. But no harm done.
@obglobgablob Woewoewoe.....wait! What the hell? Oh, damn it. Dude there is a mistake here! I wanted to write my comment to another guy! Why does it appear at scada99? i had understood his/her joke. Well about the thing you said about the communication of mine, with the language....well i speak very well English but what you said for the humor.....hmm, maybe yes! :p Thanks a lot anyway
I looked this up because of a recent episode of Dr. House where he was in a hotel room with a prostitute who could play the Hurdy Gurdy. Having never heard of the instrument before I was compelled to look it up!
And what an awesome video I did find. Cool instrument talented musician and a microphone ninja.
Wow this is interesting. but does anybody know what the instrument is called that is a box and it has a crank on its side? it might be similar to this
That is called a hurdy gurdy also. I was just educating myself on Wikipedia (Gods bless Wikipedia!) and they say, "In the eighteenth century the term hurdy gurdy was also applied to a small, portable "barrel organ" (a cranked box instrument with a number of organ pipes, a bellows and a barrel with pins that rotated and programmed the tunes) that was frequently played by poor buskers (street musicians)" Just learned recently that the instrument in this video is also a hurdy gurdy.
@rouseg7 This guy refused my offer to make good his perceived problems and subsequently bought another gurdy from me !.He has apparently ordered one from another maker. I wish the maker the best of luck with this offensive pain in the neck . If you want to know more about him, just check out the style of his comments on other Youtube clips.
@Spaztronthemusicman That's actually a relatively common occurrence in old european folk music. It essentially switches between different scales in the same key multiple times in the course of a song. It's a way to give a sense of progression without actually changing chords or keys. The composer Bartok based a lot of his style on this practice.
@DonnyRedNr1 it's called a chanter. It does that when you hit a certain note or you turn it on...dunno exactly how that works but I do know what it's called and what it does XD
@RenaAngel It's done with a kind of flick of the wrist in the turning action of the wheel. It slightly speeds up the wheel causing a little loose part of the comb underneath the trompette string (the highest sounding drone) called the "chien" (literally "dog") to tap or vibrate against the soundboard.
stage crews at folk festivals often have very short periods of time to set up for each act, so they often work around the performer as she or he begins to introduce the set.
the ninja is because at about 0:25 a stagehand/roadie-type person comes on stage, knocks his mic of the stand then replaces it - for some reason he/she is dressed up in black ninja gear!
