  • In their early days The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem sang a much rowdier version of this song, which had a one-word chorus of "Sh*t!" shouted in unison between each verse. Too bad they never recorded that version.

  • Great stuff. R.I.P. Ronnie.

  • Great Tune.

  • great song. always sing at family get togethers :)

  • Fucking love the Dubs.

  • Ronnie Drew we love you and luke too.

  • My favourite version of this is the acapella version sung by The Irish Descendants on their "best of" version. Gives me chills! And it has a nice change on the final verse that makes it particularly gritty.

I do particularly like this version, too. His gravelly voice has a nice effect.

  • My names Sam Hall,

It reminds me of one I was little and my auntie used to sing it to me.

    I love the dubliners

  • Ronnie Drew is brilliant! hes something special

  • he is.

  • gonna learn this. and i am a big fan of johnny, but cash just killed this song when he did it.

  • same name, different song... nice assumption.

  • its about the same story. and i would bet money that he listened to this song as a template.

  • M' agrada molt aquesta cançó i els Dubliners!

    ++++

  • yes paddy reilly does a very good version, seems a little slow compared to ronnies version, i like ronnies voice better, it was made for this song. how is the oul boy anyway, hope hes on the mend.

  • Yes he is getting better ! A lot of Irish Artists like Bono , Sinead O'Connor are doing a song for him !!! Definately a better version than Paddy Reilly's . Listen to Luke Kelly he is a fab ballad singer ! Regards !

  • the poor man is completely bald. must be the chemotherapy. what a legend!! long live ronnie!!!

  • Is voice sounds like centuries of Irish men going through History. Long live Ronnie Drew!!!!

  • can not beat this

  • Matter of personal opinion NicolasHazen. I also like Paddy's singing (very much) but I happen to LOVE Ronnie Drew's gravelly voice. Oh, and as for the 'Almost nobody' comment, that, too, could be very disputed. Ronnie is an icon!!

  • M' encantaaaaa

  • Wonderful! Nobody can sing this quite like the fantastic Ronnie Drew.

  • Almost nobody - Paddy Reilly is way much better than Ronnie.

  • Luke Kelly....

  • This song is about a notorious buglar, named Jack Hall. When a child he was sold by his parents for a guinea to a chimney sweep. He was hanged in 1701 at Tyburn prison.

  • Going on and on about the most "true" form is just a armchair-historical, elitist rant.

Who cares which version of the song is "true?" Johnny Cash's Americanized take is great, and this one is too - and any other version, as well.

    Settled.

  • great song

  • Damn your eyes is the original wording. The Dubliners sing a bowlderized version.

  • read the above

  • So what? The version given in the Child Ballads has "damn your eyes." Do you have a more authoritative source for your version?

  • Isn't it possible there could be several different versions?

  • In fact, there are many different versions. This is often the case with old folk songs. This song was originally written as "Jack Hall" after an infamous english thief who was hanged for his crimes. He was sold by his parents as a climber (children would climb the chimneys to clean them in the 19th century). The song is often believed to be related to "Captain Kidd) as it shares a similar structure. Such "execution songs" were popular and common in old folk tradition.

  • Its a folk song referring to Old Time Cat-Burglers. They would go into chimneys to rob people. One could assume when they were apprehended they claimed they were chimney sweeps.

  • This is a knock off by the Dubliners from a traditional English song about a hanged thief back in the 18th C. It has more verses and the ones used by the Dublines have also been amended

  • read the above

  • The True sam hall,

Not the Jonny Cash Knock Off,

Man this one is way better. This guy is matter afact, he is about to get his ass hung and he knows it. Not JC saying "AHHH DAMN YOUR EYES!" no just "an nare a word I spoke, as the hangman pulled his rope"

  • Its actually an old English, joe hall, became popular in Ireland, then a country version in the US,not written by the the legends that are johnny or dubs.
