I like this, but I prefer the Irish Descendants version the best.....it's slightly different...last verse is,..Oh my name is Sam Hall chimney sweep, chimney sweep
Oh my name is Sam Hall, and I hate ya's one and all, you're a bunch of muggers all, damn your eyes...damn your eyes...You're a bunch of muggers all, damn your eyes.
In their early days The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem sang a much rowdier version of this song, which had a one-word chorus of "Sh*t!" shouted in unison between each verse. Too bad they never recorded that version.
@niels10100 The Dubliners do it best - Johnny Cash is also very good and so are Johnny McEvoy he realy sing this song very well - sorry i lost the tape with Johnny McEvoy
Theres 3 young guys who play in a pub in Galway on Fri and Sat and they sound just like the Dubliners....old school and a proper session, dont even use mics, but what voices .....do a crackin version of this song too
I.R.A bombing brit govie work..false flag..taxes,drugging,color of law Laws..Piss poor stae of afairs folk..Our kin are rolling in their English placed graves..why do we(as a species) take this shite?
My favourite version of this is the acapella version sung by The Irish Descendants on their "best of" version. Gives me chills! And it has a nice change on the final verse that makes it particularly gritty.
I do particularly like this version, too. His gravelly voice has a nice effect.
yes paddy reilly does a very good version, seems a little slow compared to ronnies version, i like ronnies voice better, it was made for this song. how is the oul boy anyway, hope hes on the mend.
Yes he is getting better ! A lot of Irish Artists like Bono , Sinead O'Connor are doing a song for him !!! Definately a better version than Paddy Reilly's . Listen to Luke Kelly he is a fab ballad singer ! Regards !
Matter of personal opinion NicolasHazen. I also like Paddy's singing (very much) but I happen to LOVE Ronnie Drew's gravelly voice. Oh, and as for the 'Almost nobody' comment, that, too, could be very disputed. Ronnie is an icon!!
This song is about a notorious buglar, named Jack Hall. When a child he was sold by his parents for a guinea to a chimney sweep. He was hanged in 1701 at Tyburn prison.
In fact, there are many different versions. This is often the case with old folk songs. This song was originally written as "Jack Hall" after an infamous english thief who was hanged for his crimes. He was sold by his parents as a climber (children would climb the chimneys to clean them in the 19th century). The song is often believed to be related to "Captain Kidd) as it shares a similar structure. Such "execution songs" were popular and common in old folk tradition.
Its a folk song referring to Old Time Cat-Burglers. They would go into chimneys to rob people. One could assume when they were apprehended they claimed they were chimney sweeps.
This is a knock off by the Dubliners from a traditional English song about a hanged thief back in the 18th C. It has more verses and the ones used by the Dublines have also been amended
Man this one is way better. This guy is matter afact, he is about to get his ass hung and he knows it. Not JC saying "AHHH DAMN YOUR EYES!" no just "an nare a word I spoke, as the hangman pulled his rope"
Its actually an old English, joe hall, became popular in Ireland, then a country version in the US,not written by the the legends that are johnny or dubs.
That song was awsome!!! Never been much into this kind of music but damn!! Its got soul. Its the white mans blues.

Going on and on about the most "true" form is just a armchair-historical, elitist rant.
Who cares which version of the song is "true?" Johnny Cash's Americanized take is great, and this one is too - and any other version, as well.
Settled.
