  • Hi, I am looking for videos of chains for a video montage I am making. Please can I use this one? I will give credit in the end. Thanks!

  • @srinikasturi

if your video is "non profit" then sure.

    Thanks

    Geoff

  • @GeoffCoope Thanks. I do not intend to make money with the video. Thanks again.

  • i just completed a collage course in 3ds max that is really good NICE ONE

  • @GeoffCoope thanks bro

  • Search for "3DSMax Fracture"

  • I am going to study this :D

  • nice

  • Cheers :)

  • wow dude awsome

  • That would be a flail, not a mace.

  • Thanks for the correction

  • that seem more like just a ball and chain, its flail commonly have handles, this could also be utilized as a trowing weapon, i dont see how though.

  • I've been wanting to animate a chain, much like you did. Can you help me, or suggest a tutorial on animating a chain?

    Fantastic animation

  • In a nutshell

    1. Create a chain (separate link objects and not touching each other)

    2. Add rigid body to scene, add links

    3. Open reactor panel from Utilities panel, Give each link mass and friction.

    4. Make top link unyielding (can also animate it)

    5. click the Preview in window button, and then Simulation menu->play and hopefully gravity will pull all the links down.

If you have issues with the links breaking away then use point to point constraints on each link.

    Cheers

    Geoff

  • how were you able to animate the top link? whenever i try this, the other links just ignore it's animation and stay in one spot...

    suggestions?

  • If your using torus meshes as links make sure that they start off interconnected like a real chain (but not touching).

in Utility panel select MORE and run "Reactor" utility to change the following parameters:

Give each link 1.0 Mass and tick Concave Mesh.

    Make the top link Unyelding

From max main menu, click reactor->Preview Animation then click the menu Simulation->Play

All your links should drop down with gravity and hang there as the top most link is Unyielding, now animate it.

  • @GeoffCoope Hey can u upload the file to anyhost ? Because I'm trying to do it, and my computer goes mad and freeze.

    Tnhx anyway !

    Nice video.

  • hi, often i have problems with reactor in 3d max 7 , do you have any tutorial about or about other thinks in 3d max?

  • unfortunately I don't but a good resource is the CGTalk forums. I will try do some mini tutorial when I get a chance tho.

  • Like this, nice work.

  • Thanks :D

  • Its all part of Reactor. First you slice up a single rock into small chunks. You can do that using Pro Cutter or with a script (many about). Then select all the chunks and apply a Fracture to it. What this does is holds the rock together so it looks exactly the same as the original rock, only when something hits it will it break apart.

  • How do you make the rock smash?

  • Noticed that the top link in the chain loses its position near the end, rather than re-running the simulation it would just be quicker to manually key that link.
