Cate was carrying that entire second half of the movie. She's a huge movie star. And she was improbably replaced in that fifth shot by Indie actress Melissa Leo, who was a dark horse long shot, to say the least. As I said, I didn't think it was going to be an Indie year, but it seems that it is.
True. I just knew they were going to skip Cate this year. She was very graceful but in a conventional role, and nothing close to what she is truly capable of. I knew at least one of the indie/foreign trifecta would make it, but I'm disappointed all three didn't.
Obviously, I didn't think any of them would make it. As I said, I thought they'd go for the Big Gals. And they did. For four slots, so Melissa Leo, as grand an actress as she is, is really lucky she got the nomination. It, of course, will totally change her career. AND she was great in the movie, "Frozen River" which is coming out on DVD any minute now.
I'm glad u guys chose Cate Blanchett - she's a wonder in BB! I hope she'll get her third lead actress nom!
But I'm still all 4 a STREEP win! Oscar has been holding back for far too long now!! This yr's field has so many talented performers, any of them could make it to prestige list!
I am ALL OUT 4 a STREEP win - not for Doubt but for Mamma Mia!!
I'm quite delighted 3 of u chose Cate Blanchett - she's a wonder in BB. Hope she'll get her third lead Oscar nom! But this year's field so full of talents, anyone can break thru. CAN'T WAIT for Thurs announcement!
I can't believe not one of you think Kristin Scott-Thomas will be nominated for I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG. She has my vote for the SAG Award, which I think she has a chance of winning.
Unfortunately, I think Kristin is a long shot. She's competing with the Indie gals Melissa Leo of "Frozen River" and the recent Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins for that last slot. And none of them, shockingly, may make it. As I said on the show, I think it's all gonna be about the Big Stars this year. And the winner for Best Actress will be an American. Which would either Anne Hathaway or Meryl Streep.
Marisa Tomei isn't even lead in The Wrestler. She's being campaigned for supporting. At the GGs and SAGs she was nominated for SUPPORTING because she is NOT the lead actress.
Merrick Bursuk missed by just one!
