His main advice appears to be "have good parents". Doesn't help me much as I had abusive and narcissistic parents. My dad was in WW2 too but always booked leave time before an offensive to avoid injury. A six year party for that lazy coward.
What an inspiration. I hope and pray that his family and children have the strength to deal with his passing, that he had for living. My heart and soul go out to them and to him. If we had people like that running countries, this would be a much better world to live in.
Much respect to this man. My father was also diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, It is very hard to deal with for both parties and this lecture is an inspiration. I am going to show this video to my father :)
To those who critise this man: Its about how you can life in order to reach happiness. Hes not trying to be a hero or gain praise.. he left the video for his kids. Lets get a reality check, if his motives in life were to step over others for money, he'd be a banker not a PhD advancing the state of human knowledge, so that you can enjoy all the innovations that we have today and which make our economy strong. Ignore his valuable advice if you choose, but youre only cheating yourself, no one else.
I knew the negative comments about this guy would come eventually.. He basically was an arrogant jerk who stomped all over people to get his way to the top. Then at the end he started spewing a bunch of Hallmark Card cliches and the Oprah crowd started to worship him. I'm sure it fed his massive ego until the very end.
To all the ppl who insults this man is a stupid person I bet you that no one who has postes anything bad about him couldnt even 2 word of his speech so stop hating and get back to ur boring lifes filled with doubt and carppy jobs and stop hating on ppl who have money and phds and cant get on TV, ur nobody just another SSC number with a mac, And If u belive in God u know he doesnt approve this type of behavoir. Khun Randy Paunch's speech will be benifitial to everyone who listen and here what he really left benind. Let's show to our kids to induce them to develop their childhood's dreams. Thanks to Randy and may he rest in peace with God.
Why must religion be judged on if in his entire lecture he didnt speak one word that has to do with God. His speach was of life a life that we were given in a way no one is truely sure of. But either way we all reach death but what we do with life and the time that is given to us is our decision. Religion was not born for those who are weak yet for those who want to believe and have faith. Thank you Dr. Randy Pausch for your words may you R.I.P. and may some of us learn from your example!!! :]
people please stop the crusades. this isn't the place for you to try and slam someone who is dead about his religioin. you obviously haven't learned anything from him because you're waisting your time leaving negative comments online instead of doing something usful. to suggest that this man deserved his death because he chose to live his life without god or religion says everything you need to know about the sorry subject.

BIKabballa - you seem like an intelligent person, but "self-obsessed/absorbed, conceited, throwing a pity party" dont seem like negative comments to you? I disagree & I DEFINITELY disagree about ANY of those terms applying to Dr Randy! His lecture is all about him because it was written for his KIDS to feel like they could get to know him & learn from his life lessons. That, & further attention to pancreatic cancer, is all he hoped to accomplish. And God DID bless him by allowing him to do that!
Have you listened to the lecture and REALLY understood what the message is? Did you REALLY listen and digested every word? OR you merely jumped into your OWN conclusions without FULLY understanding? Now THAT's SELF-OBSSESSED! Stating your own opinions without proper interpretation and wisdom.

Thank you- I opt NOT to discuss "intellectual" matters with someone who doesn't even know what he is talking about- using heavy but empty words. Life is too short- with or without cancer.
I'm saddened to see some nasty comments on here(Blkabballa - you say you believe in karma? Writing negative comments on youtube about an amazing(dead)man is sure to bring a lot of good to you). If you don't care about that, care about those of us who don't want to "hear" it! Now, as with everything, you simply can not have positive without negative, light without darkness, etc. You claimed to be saddened, by your interpretation of something I wrote. That is your choice.

So Jude, to reiterate my point, this man suffered from the all to American affliction, which is Self-Obsession. If he was as self absorbed and conceited throughout his entire earlier life as he demonstrates in this Last Lecture, than I would say yes, Karma was knocking on the door of his life saying 'Hey buddy, get over yourself!' When you really look at it, this whole thing is one Big Pity Party. If my noticing that makes you feel 'saddened', you may want to reevaluate your value system friend.

And one final note. I am not certain, though I strongly suspect Mr. Pausch was an Athiest, as are most Marxist College Professors. They think they have it all figured out, and therefore can relegate GOD to the Dark Ages. As if The Lord is no longer in existence. You know, the whole pseudo-intellectual 'God Is Dead' tripe. But the very same dolts say it all came from the 'Big Bang'. Now that theory is certainly as much, if not more of a 'leap of faith' than ANY Religion on the face of the Earth!
In the Book of Proverbs we Find: "The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction." King Solomon goes on to warn us about False Pride; "Because I have called, and you have refused...I will mock when calamity overtakes you... when distress and anguish come on you. Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me; because they hated knowledge, and didn't choose the fear of Yahweh."
Im sure he made alot of money exploiting the fact that even when he claims he doesnt want to be an object of pitty, people actually sees him that way, wich in turn gets oprah to give him a huge bill for his lecture.
Nobody should need a dying guy going over his life to realize all that can be done in a lifetime.

Well Pietro, for the most part I agree with the points you've made. I do find his story inspiring, yet at the same time he comes across as so self-obsessed that it's pathetic. Perhaps that's why Karma laid that Cancer on him in the first place. Yet another Cult-of-Personality flash in the pan. Could his dreams have included more noble things such as working towards world peace, and eliminating poverty disease and starvation?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So the 'Headfake' is that he claims he doesn't want pity, but ends up getting pitied worldwide. So this half-baked drivel is the best people can aspire to in these days and times? Of course the College Campuses are havens for Atheism and Marxism, therefore it makes since that this tripe would appeal to such Godless people with empty lives and bankrupt souls. 'Tis a Pity! And Ms O can take her feminism Drama jump in a fvcking lake with Obama!
I dont think Karma would lay cancer to balance this kind of person/dreams. We all could have the dream of universal justice and equity, but maybe thinking that way is too deep for this situation. I agree with the over-self-obsession, but the guy was dying, i guess hes entitled some ego. My point wasnt specifically about him. I just think the way he faces his upcoming death is as admirable as it is pathetic the way ppl feel guilty for being "worse" at living than what his lecture sais he was.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You know what I think the reason people flocked to this 'Last Lecture' is because he didn't 'Look Sick'. For a person in such an advanced stage of cancer, he looked quite well. Fact is, people do not seem to want to be around anyone who looks ill in any way, much less watch/hear a lecture from them (baring a few very exclusive situations and unique people). If he looked like most other cancer patients towards the end, nothing would have come of any of this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And I do believe that karma can create cancer, or cure it. IMHO Think about the semantics there; self-absorption, obsession, consumption. Is that not an exact metaphor for the nature of cancer itself?
Karma can create cancer? Are you a scientist? Are you certified to say such an IGNORANT and SHALLOW comment? What about ALL the other self-absorbed, obsessed-compulsive folks who does NOT get cancer and seems like karma doesn't apply to them? How about all the corporate evils, criminals etc?
Instead of posting STUPID remarks-why don't you do YOUR part in improving the world and promoting PEACE and LOVE. There is so much misery in the world-what are you doing about it?
BIKabballa he admits early in life 2 self-absorbed, acted like know-it-all, & rude 2 others. Conditioned 2B that way early in life will likely B it at end of life as we live in our early life & end of life as often we see clearest then. What he is pt-ing out is early life gives us our drive, our dreams, & our character & we should care about children's experiences most of all. He gave speech 2 tell his kids that hear he is lecturing which was what he did, but it was them he wanted 2 teach & love
This comment is for HAsshish, Badhabit or whatever his name is. You are a total ignoramus, a person not deserving to even listen to a person of Randy Pausch's intelligence. This man lived a fuller, more beautiful life than most of us will even with his short time. By God, it sure shows how huge of an influence parents have on their children. Imagine how great his parents were.
Hi Randy, That was truly amazing. You will be an inspiration to all those who have come in contact with you and to those who have had the good fortune to share your video.
Life is such a gift and we very often do not appreciate its value.
if you have Real Player on your computer a box should pop up on the upper right hand corner of the video when you wave the cursor over it. when u click on it you'll b able to download videos. ones worth keeping such as this.
I as so moved by his speech today, I couldn't believe how positive and how much he was embracing the 'now' of life. Amazing. Inspiring. God bless him.
This is one of the most moving and heart wrenching speeches I have ever watched! EVERYONE should take a few minutes and watch this video. I want as many people as possible to see it, SO... I posted it on my FaceBook and MySpace pages. God Bless Dr. Pausch and his family!!
God bless this man and his family that is so lucky to have him as their father and husband. I am going to watch this video everytime I need a pick me up..
Great lecture, although he wrote it for his three young kids at first I know that everyone of us that have seen it, are going to be more than grateful for every word he said, and appreciate life as it is. Thanks Dr. Pausch, greetings from Costa Rica.
God bless you and your family. I pray for you to stay and feel strong. I hope you and your family receive all you pray for. We are all going to die.We just don't know when.Doctor's are not God. All we can do is live today...tomorrow is not here yet... all we have is today... Hope you get stronger day by day...
First off, thanks for sharing! (I would have missed out) And I ditto what sykickg said...amazing~ It's not depressing, but rather strengthens my resolve to experience what this man has/is...If he can enjoy life in the face of death, why can't I with hopefully so many years ahead of me?! ^^
I didnt find it depressing. I found it to be very inspiring. His talk isnt about death, its about life... and how to live to accomplish your dreams. Life is like this; we're all in a sailboat, and its not the wind that determines our destination in life, its the set of our sail. Most people complain about the blowing of the wind, and that does nothing. He understands that the wind blows on us all, and has set his sail of better thinking to live a happy life, and sharing this with others.
I have to agree with xemb23. I find this depressing without feeling inspired. Perhaps it's a matter of the circumstances surrounding each of our lives that causes us to look at the same video and be affected so differently, but I felt fine before watching, and once it was over, I was thoroughly depressed.
It is depressing that people die suddenly and tragically. Death also happens to young people. We all have to accept this fact. However, his speech was about life. Embracing life, enjoying life, fulfilling your dreams, showing gratitude. These things are definitely not depressing.
I understand what his talk is about. I still find it extremely depressing. As per my previous post, the circumstances of Pausch's life are different from mine, and his talk only reinforces my conviction that I can never realize my childhood dreams.

Hi Randy, That was truly amazing. You will be an inspiration to all those who have come in contact with you and to those who have had the good fortune to share your video.
Life is such a gift and we very often do not appreciate its value.
Thank you for you courage and spirit.
Love to your kids and god bless.

I as so moved by his speech today, I couldn't believe how positive and how much he was embracing the 'now' of life. Amazing. Inspiring. God bless him.

Great lecture, although he wrote it for his three young kids at first I know that everyone of us that have seen it, are going to be more than grateful for every word he said, and appreciate life as it is. Thanks Dr. Pausch, greetings from Costa Rica.
