anyone know a good tutorial on how to sidechain with a muted kick so that it still has the sidechain effect without the kick. I want to sidechain a vocal sample and I can't figure it out.
u make great tracks good sounds, but thats not how u sidechain on the right method compressors are not made for sidechain effects at all :P the correct and first way to make side chain is to use peakcontroller with blanace in an opposite/negative way, thats built only for sidechain effect :P goodluck
a little note for newbies out there. try using a high hat with the same beat placement as your kicks. then use your high hat to sidechain. so that the cut off doesn't last as long. then mute your high hat and leave your kick on. this can be used for tracks with faster placed kicks.
see whenever i sidechain usin this method, its usually the snare to my bassline, (not the sub, the like wobble basslines) and it makes the snare sound like its got a chorus effect on it whenever i turn the sidechain knob up. when its all the way down to the left obv it doesent do anything.
this was very helpful...tho when I raise the Gain in Limiter on my Bass, the kick and bass clash all over again...could I apply Limiter to my kick and turn up the gain?
@theofficialDeFalco Its an automation method that makes some sounds silents while the kick is punching and make them audible when the kick goes off. Its intended to prevent the kick get buried for the rest of the instruments, specially pads and basslines or to keep the levels undistorted.
@djslash20 thanks for ur comment! =) but how to know wat sounds to sidechain?? would it be more for leads and pads that this would be recommended to do??
very nice explained, but it grooves weird on the strings. the internal solutions from logic and live seem to be the only good ones, since in all other daws you hear a delay on the sidechains -.-
Ah, ok. Just figured my problem below out. I was wrong. The previous commenter was right. I like that this tutorial is short and well to the point, but there's a mistake after he sends the kick to the bass insert in the mixer. He then turns up the volume of the send. You're don't do that unless you want doubled kicks with one of them using the effects in the bass insert.
Oh ok. Hm, just read another comment further down saying that the issue with the tutorial is when he turns up the volume knob after sending the Kick to the Bass sidechain. He says you shouldn't, and that it is a problem with the tutorial. Not sure if my way is correct, this other poster's solution is correct, or both would work? Grrr...
Is this a kind of a mistake in the video? Shouldn't you "sidechain to this track only" or disable the send to master? Otherwise, you get the sidechained sound coming from the Bass insert AND the dry sound coming from the Kick insert going to the master. In other words, doubled kicks. I'm keeping careful control over dB levels of everything in the track I'm working on, and suddenly my kick was several dBs louder than expected until I clicked "Disable send from Kick to Master" from Kick insert.
Ok I got the side chaining to work but when I click on my kick channel, i then click on my synth channel and click on the arrow and then click side chain to this track. It works and all but my kick audio actually comes out the synth channel using its effects like distortion and stuff... I see you didn't have any effects on there so i couldn't tell if this is supposed to happen but whats the point of side chaining like this if it does happen?
OMG I've been trying to side chain with the fruity peak controller on a track with 5 + synths and sweeps so i had to make different muted kicks for all of them because you can only link 1 thing to a controller thanks!!!
How do you set up a ghost kick, and also when I have Bass, Pads, or whatever I have side chained to my kick some some of the effects I use on the parts side chained to the kick carry over. Like If I load up a delay or reverb I will hear it on the Kick as well. Not sure how to fix that. Amazing tutorial,
i dont understand. i have sidechained to my kick drum but when i go to use FL limiter its always on pause and never shows the sound even when i hit play. whats going on?
@killlagger468 When you see the big PAUSE in capital letters, click right on that word and it will unpause it. Then, you can see the audio being detected again in the Fruity Limiter.
@ZgtPe3PP3eRzzz Dude, c'mon you think i didnt try that?! I Forgot to Enable the FX slot in the Mixer...Weird why would you disable that as a feature? o.0
@RumandAce when sidechaining, dont move the knobs to increase the volume, because the sound of your kick is going to the master and the other channel too, and from that channel to the master again, this tutorial has an error, that is!!!!, just right click and sidechain, but dont increase the volume...
Is there a way to make the sidechain only respond to low frequencies? Like say i want the kick and snare on the same track and I have them side chaining to a pad track. Is there a way to make the pad only "duck" to the kick drum and not the snare?
i dont think there is really a way? but what id do if i were you is add another track with a kick with no low frequences at very low volume and have your pad side chained to that instead, it may even bring more brightness to your kick
i think its inportant to side chain, and not just side chain the lead synths with the kick or the bass but many other things to make sure that the kick is driving with nothing cluttering it up. experiment with sidechaining almost anything. you would be suprised as to what results you can get.
There is a much easier way to do that. Just duplicate a kick drum on the beat track, and get the peak controller out. Keep that kick muted (since that's just your sidechain only track). Then, just group your synths to one track (unless you want a more personalized EQ) and link those tracks to the sidechain track. It's a lot easier, and it's a quicker method. The result is the same, and you save time.

@wicketts16 Sidechaining is an arrangement ( in sequence ) of the out put of the controller's signal path i.e. Reverb, gate, compressor ... All these are dynamics ... which control Sound signal. When you Sidechain or "Daisy Chain - old school" you essentially Direct the beat i.e. Kick to a compressor which if connected to the other synth i.e. strings (trance music) Via Bus & auxiliary it creates a depletion of sound or compression - Every time the kick comes in it compresses the sound of strings
@wicketts16 making it seem like the strings get stronger in signal causing the amplitude (volume) to rise. This effect is used in many modern songs but is predominantly found in Electronic music such as Trance, Progressive house, Dubstep, Electro house etc....
I meant to say compresses the sound of strings for a very short time then the compression recedes allowing for the String's signal to gain amplitude. WHew
@wicketts16 it stops basses and pads from drowning out other instruments in the track. after applying a sidechain effect the track sounds less cluttered but sometimes it can be overdone in my opinion, especially when people aply heavy compression to vocals. if done just right sidechain compression can make a house track sound much better.
@MarqLouieIVI it basicly brings down the sound volume (for example a synth or bassline) everythime when the sound you're sidechaining hits or makes sound (for example the kick) & indeed if you sidechain it alot like he did in this video you'll get a fade effected (Gated) Pad or synth
@wicketts16 It's to get the song pumping. The other tracks compress when the kick drum triggers the compressor. So the volume of the other track goes up and down based on the kick/compressor settings. Used to make the kick more pronounced as well in some music.(more of a subtle thing) But in dance music it's all about the pumping :P
@wicketts16 It's very simple - When you sidechain your kickdrum, you overload it so when the synth / lead is added, it will give like a fading punch effect :-)
hey i have a question. im havin trouble sampling. when i add drums to the sample, the volume of the sample lowers. how do i keep the volume of the sample at the same level with drums as it was by itself?
Is it just me, or does bass needs to be a bit louder because after you side chain/compress it? I can barely hear the sound while the kick is playing over it. Idk maybe its just me. :)

@wicketts16 To give a pulsing kind of beat, it adds to the music.

Hope that helped :-)

@Agniveshbaghel Even when not turning up the volume, my kick and drums change in sound when I sidechain with an instrument/pad.

alextorti3 7 months ago
Is it just me, or does bass needs to be a bit louder because after you side chain/compress it? I can barely hear the sound while the kick is playing over it. Idk maybe its just me. :)
