  • And, I don't know about Naptural85 being a 4a/4b. Maybe it's her products or the way her hair hangs but it looks like it is a whole new texture that Andre didn't realize existed yet. I haven't seen anyone with her hair texture.

  • I don't pay too much attention to the hair typing system but my hair is just like your hair.

  • how is the jamaican castor oil working on ur edges?

  • You're right the typing system both typing systems should be used as a guide...it's not gospel. I have 3 different textures on my head that defiant depending on products used. But nonetheless I love it and I listen to my hair and give it what it needs...moisture and to be left alone lol

  • Only now using bentonite clay for nearly a year now do I have a 'curl pattern'. It's more curly now and it clumps but as soon as it dries, the hairs remains separate. My hair isn't coarse and it's more 'fine' or thin than my sister who could rock an afro! XD

I go on forums and just skip the posts mentioning 4a and 4bs gather together because I'm not one of them!

  • I get absolutely confused with the Andre system with 4s and 3s because my hair isn't 'kinky' or 'nappy'. I don't have a curl pattern. It doesn't clump together and it's kind of more straight but not wavy. :/ Wet, it doesn't have ANY curl defintion, and when I twist my hair it unravels easily. It doesn't hold a mark when unplaited and there is no 'shrinkage' WHATSOEVER!! 'Shrinkage' was an alien concept until I talked to my friend a couple months ago!

  • Very informative video, I like how you touched on alot of things. my hair has definite coils, but the individual coils are miniscule(sp?) like smaller than a penspring. I also have 75%+ shrinkage so in your opinion, would I be considered 4b or still 4a. I know its not important but I still would like a second opinion.

  • Tu es trop mignion!!!!!

  • Hey afrikanhairgod just coming to thank you adding me as a friend I hope that you can keep uploading videos to make us happy and that one day you will subscribe to my channel so I can return the fave :) thanks again keep pushin bro

  • I agree, curl typing should be used as a guide. But what really matters most is the hair texture, density, and porosity. That really determines how product will react on hair. It is good to know our hair type though, it helps us know what we're working with. Very interesting!

  • So true. I sub to over 100 people I can't think of two people who have the exact same texture. I used to be hung up on the typing system when I began transitioning but now I focus less on comparing letters and numbers. lol

  • correction *I meant Curl enhancing smoothie* :lol

  • I look forward to your thoughts on hair typing? I've given up on that. I don't know what I have. I just know the first half of my hair is wavy and the back half is spongy coils.

  • Yes you hit the nail on the head. I use to read product reviews and stay away from certain products because the 4b or 4c reviewers said that it didn't work well. In particular for the Shea Moisture line. Recently I decided to try the Coconut and Hibiscus curl defining cream (not for curl def. b/c I don't have curls) but for moisture. I didn't expect it to work well BUT OMG I was wrong! I am so impressed with this product! So I agree with all of ur points. Thx for the thoughtful response.

  • I will say, I love the way you turn around while in front of the camera.

  • Nappy, kinky, curly are all relative.

  • I am now getting into using the LOIS system, which, in my opinion, works better than the Andre system.

  • I definitely don't get into the classification of naturals for division sake. And I have not met any naturals that think this way...thank God! I think the classifications could definitely help in other ways. People don't need to see this as an us vs. them thing because that would be ridiculously silly.

  • Great point, good honesty keeping it real. your hair looks great regardless of what type you make your hair is look great keep up the great vids! : )

  • I liked this video great points you have but i really dont get the hair typing thing people would say to me you have good hair do you have indian in you (maybe somewhere down the line but idk) but my response to them kinda of comments is diffrent then just thank you why would I just say thank you I would SAY so do you if you take care of your hair everyone can have good hair beautiful hair if they take good care of there hair or try to

  • great vid! i never use the hair typing :)

  • I agree AHG we are experts in our own hair :) great video

  • HAIR TYPING - just another way to separate us! They did it with light skin dark skin, now this - they never stop!

  • @supynorr Word.

  • continue....ok done detangling. Next. LOL.

  • Ohhh when I first went natural, I wanted to cry so much because I had the hardest time detangling!!! I ripped out so much of my hair...combing, combing and more combing to get it untangled. But then one day (8 years later lol) I thought to myself, " Girl your hair is curly (I have really small coils) why are you trying to comb out these little curls?" So now I just dont' even fight. If it wants to curl up I let it! I just finger comb now. Sooooooooooooooo liberating....seriously. Now I am like..

  • i loved your vid! your hair looked great :)

  • Well, whaddya know? I've got lovemaking hair! :D You are a hoot, AHG!

Anyhow, I DO think that Andre Walker's system is useful. My hair is in the 4s, my daughter's is in the 3s and there are noticeable differences in how products behave in our respective heads of hair. That doesn't mean that EVERY product for afro-textured hair is going to be a hit for me but it DOES help narrow the field quite a bit.

I don't see it as a hierarchy that encourages divisiveness either, just a handy reference tool.

  • omg, we have the same hair types 4a,b, &c...i also have a small patch in the nape that is 3c (the curls are crazy big & do not shrink like my other hair strands). when i upload my natural hair journey vid, you'll see what i mean. and people also tell me that i'm not 4c & that i'm 4b/4a. i can't anymore! lol i just pay attention to the thickness, coarseness of a person's hair, to see how a style will work on me. have u tried eco for wags? just tried it on a patch & was amazed at the definition.

  • LOL! You're absolutely adorable. I love your face at 3:49 :)

Thanks for this vid because I too struggle with my extremely kinky, coily nappy hair. I try to stay away from this whole typing business as it's just another way for the black community to divide and catergorize themselves. It's just like janeblow80 says...afro textured hair that needs water and oil.

  • Thanks for doing a response! you shoulda seen me over here hype when I saw it lol... but yes, I agree with EVERYTHING you said. And the way you describe your hair is exactly how I would describe mine. I think people try to g check you when you say you have 4c hair because they feel like 4c hair can't have any coil or curl at any point in the hair which is completely false. It's like they're saying "your hair looks to good to be 4c!" smh Some people need to re-evaluate their thinking for real!

  • I use to be into the hair typing a lot, only because I thought if I find people with the same hair type there products would work for my hair, but that's not true, so I don't really care about it anymore.

  • I totally agree with you that hair typing is a guide. My hair is very cottony and I don't see a whole lot of other YT'ers that have my type of hair. LOL at 6:14 - 6:30, I must confess. I've done it also. Regardless of the hair typing system, I have learn more from other YT'ers about my hair then I have ever learned in my life.

  • I'm so over the hair typing lol

  • @RellaBella92 I completely agree!!!

  • Great video. I don't even use the lois nor the andre guide. I got afro textured hair that needs water and oil. the end.

  • @janeblow80 EXACTLY!!! Once you take all the letters and numbers away you still are left with the same issues no matter what type you have: breakage, dryness, thinning, split ends, ect.

  • hair hair hair......my hair even curls up more or less depending on the conditioner or shampoo uses will alter how the hair reacts when it curls up.

  • @Br0wnSgr and i thik LOIS is too complex

  • @Br0wnSgr Yeah some products like that define curls more than other.... All I know is its way too much going on on my head to be tryna classify all my strands into specific groups lol
