Hi Annie, your music is real food for the spirit, heart, and soul. Thanks ever so much for sharing, Janet, with grateful thanks from the Philippines :)
have i lost my objectivity? i just finished listening to lukas geniusas, prize winner at the last chopin competition, playing this etude, and find annie's rendition as good, if not better. annie, this is truly amazing.
Superb Annie! one of my favorite etudes (when Chopin puts the melody in the left hand its Always a treat) you play this with a pathos that i love! Bravo.
She is very talented but her over emoting with her body is distracting to the music. Too many young pianists try to look like adults or try to look like Lang Lang who I dislike because of his onstage antics. Just play the music without all that fake emotional drama. It's the music we want to focus on.
@AX9898r I've said this before -- this child is not over- emoting. This is her genuine body choreography that comes out of, and helps her maintain, her quite remarkable phrasing. Honestly -- is it any use to make comments that might make her self-conscious, when her technique and musicianship are coming in so well? If it distracts you, close your eyes and let Chopin carry you.
@manthasagittarius I doubt that Annie reads these comments because she's too busy practicing piano 10 hours a day. You miss my point. She is a very good piano player especially at her age, but her body movement looks contrived and to me it's like trying to listen to an 11 year-old sing about a romantic relationship. Weird. But I'm sure she has been coached this way from the very beginning by her teacher.
@SVGirl99 I believe I do take your point, and I think it says rather more about you and your perceptions about the emotive capacity of adolescents than it does about this young performer. If you watch her across a range of her repertory -- especially playing Bach -- you will see that her body choreography is appropriate to the piece, not contrived. This is her way of controlling her phrasing -- for her, it's whole-body and external; for others, more internal. Always an individual development.
The opening phrase was so beautiful and once more, as with the Ballade, what followed was pure poetry. How you anticipate the melody's overall direction without exaggeration but allow it to simply unfold.
The "cello" melody was well-shaped and very expressive right from the start.....In Cecil's version (video posted) the melody was a little sluggish and out of time....spoiling the opening of this master piece of true beauty.
wow i honestly wasnt expecting such a performance from an 9 year old... there are many kids who can play fast but she has a deep understanding and feeling for this study... and its not so easy work the different voices out and get them together!!!
Every time I think I've already heard your best performance ever, you come along and surprise me with a new video that's even more amazing. This one is fantastic. A whole galaxy of stars for you!
it is as if chopin himself is playing.. too beautiful.
