If you focus on her close-ups, you'll see Ricky Nelson took his looks from his mother. Great song. Irving Berlin all the way. For that reason, I'd have also liked to hear this song done by Mabel Mercer.
Harriet is simply wonderful in this film and this song is marvellous. The words are perfect if one really takes them in, in the context of the movie. Great melody and a fabulous piano introduction. Harriet is so sweet and 'innocent' - it all fits perfectly together!! They really knew how to make movies back then!!
if anyone's ever had the misfortune to see the version that the british public had to put up with in 1936 then you'll know that this is much better, the censor people in the uk didn't like the use of the word satan and so it was edited and so didnt make much sense
Well, you wanna know what? I disagree with you and OhGodisGood. I think she fit wonderfully in the movie, the song is great, and all is spectacular with it :)
irene dunne in my opinion would have fit the role better wilsondylanmccartney . Not to mention that she was very over-shadowed in the film by fred, ginger, and scott.
Always loved this song and performance. That gown! That figure! That face! And a great singer to boot. To think she ended up Everyone's Mom. Does anyone have the film where she does a chicken dance complete with her cluck-cluck-clucking and walking like a chicken?
Beautiful song, nicely done. That was one heck of a good movie, too, for which this song was written. ["Follow the Fleet," 1936, starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Randolf Scott, Harriet Hillard, the music of Irving Berlin.... oh, and lest I forget, you will also find a young Lucille Ball, long before her "I Love Lucy" fame.]
@inksac Thank you for offering this opinion about Ella. I would've thought Mabel Mercer. But you're right. Ella fits the song, too. You say she did a rendition of it?

This is a very famous moment in Hollywood musical film history. Harriet did a gorgeous job in it and the breathtaking gown is a sensation in itself.

Your dad was a sailor? Nah, seriously, I've always loved this song. Ella Fitzgerald did an awesome version, but I haven't found it here yet.
