  • well if i had a band i would be perfectly happy if people just lisend to my music, regardless if they paid for it or not. the most imporint thing is sharing your talint with the word for evryone to enjoy otherwise ur just selfish.i buy albums but its not like the band them selves dont tour

  • 4th dude...........

  • and when i say he was going to school i meant for music in college...

  • cliff burton is and will be the best for metallica, he not only played bass but could play guitar as well and we never got to hear that. cliff was going to school when they had all met so i know in my heart that cliff was the fuel that fed the fire. had the terrible accident never happened the sound of metallica would have gone a totally different direction and they probably would have kept that distinctive sound known as metal up your ass!

  • I Dont Know why people says that this is Insrumental,Cause , James sing:When a Men Lies blalala..... This song is very cool.

  • @MrJonnathan2007 This is instrumental song 'cause there's the music sounding through the entire song except for the short moment that James says the poem of Cliff, Metalica's bassist

  • @MartinPolonize ho do you think is a Better Bassist,Jason,Robert of Clifford?

  • @MrJonnathan2007 Why are you askin me this question? They all are great but Cliff was special, exceptional. He was musically the most educated guitarist. He could also play a classical guitar or electric or acoustic and what is more he known much about music harmony & theory

  • 4:25-7:25 ear-garsmic

  • ''Buy the next Metallica Album, but don't count on it to be good'' It's wasnt good, it was Fuckin' Awesome, Back to The Oldschool!

  • ADDIO MARCO

  • this song kickass!!!

  • 10 people died ?

  • what if i say that i own nearly all the cds ever made of metallica theyre all real legit coppies that i paid a lot of money cos i respect what u wrote back in the video. but i dont listen to that music i download flacs and listen to them cos theyre better quality even from the original record is dat still considered illegal

  • 4:52 to 6:35 is my favorite part of this piece of music. <3

  • 4:25-6:40 is THE most godlike piece of music I've heard. It's weird how a couple of notes can produce tears.

  • I have seen multiple shows. I drove in a foot of snow to see you in Boston a couple of years back. I own a $2500. KH2, which is awesome. I bought every, and I mean every, record, tape and CD you ever had, most several times over. Pirating sucks but shit happens, they are not true fans. The fact is, for $10 I am supporting my favorite band and I am getting a pristine copy. So Metallica, Slipknot and a few others are always going to get my purchase. All the one hit wonders can kiss my ass.

  • this song was apparently written for cliffs death. to honor thier friend. not make a buck. MakoProductions... yea fuck you and your public announcment.

  • youre a fucking idiot. they wouldnt have no reason to play anymore? why cuz they not makin money? thats bullshit a band makes most their money from touring stealing the music is jus hurting the record company. they should care bout playing the music than just some idiot pirating thier music. FTW.

  • im glad u put that message in the front of the song. i am a CD BUYER. i have to have the cd. i hate downloaded cds

  • y diddnt they put this song in gh metallica, fuck y couldnt they put all their instrumental songs n da game not just orion but all of em

  • Don't 'pirate?' To hell with that farce called 'Intellectual Property!'

  • You're using their music on a site like this and talking about anti piracy? what a hypocrite

  • this is actually the 4th... cause its anesthesia (pulling teeth), call of the ktulu, orion, then this one

  • 7:25 - 7:46 Rest in peace Cliff we miss you so fucking much!

  • makes me cry all the time. :'(

  • good song. one of the best albums they ever made, aside the other albums they made

  • well to @giorgio797 you join a band bust your ass to make good music and let people steal it from you and see if your happy about it. ive bought every cd ive ever owned and will continue to do so. if a cd is good it is worth spending my hard earned money on period. a cd is a work of art. How painters have you seen giving thier paintings away. how many tatoos have you gotten free. just cause we have the technology to copy dosent make it ok

  • i love the bridge that part sings and gives a beautiful feeling and poots you in a relaxing mood after hearing someheavy shit its great

  • Some people think THIS song was played at Cliff Burtons funeral, it was ORION. This was the first album with Jason Newsted.

  • “When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?” thats the hidden message

  • R.I.P cliff but he never played on this album his last album was master of puppets this song is a tribute to him

  • @thunderbluff3 umm yes but it was inspired by him he wanted metallica to be more melodic instead just thrash all the time. i believe he actually wrote the sing just didnt make onto a record till afterbhe died. definitely wasnt jason writing the bass line in this song

  • @Zimba3786 he did and the songs name is his favorite quote

  • R.I.P CLIFF BURTON <3 We miss you and your lead bass skills due to awesomeness <3

  • Uma das musicas q me fez qrer aprender guitarra, ouço desde 94, mas soh agora consigo tirar alguns trechos, eh fantastica a sensaçao !

  • RIP Cliff Burton

  • Best Instrumental ever

  • im gonna tattoo this phrase somewere on my body, the meaning means alot

  • pero y el del cliff burton

  • but if ppl dont make money for what they do, why do it, gotta pay bills one way or another. Sad to say if we do not pay for art, no one will make it.

  • amazing song but this is the 4th instrumental because 1st ot was Anasthesia(pulling teeth) a instrumental with only bass and drums. and then call of ktulu and orion and then To Live is To Die #4

  • EPIC!!!!

  • some people in here are nit picky little pricks...you call Metallica sell outs and think you know something about behind the scenes. Ever hear of Bob Rock? He produced the Black album and the rest up to, AND St. Anger which nearly killed the band. They should have fired him after Load in my opinion. Black album was the peak of their career and until the Death Magnetic didn't really produce much close to this... Long live Metallica

  • 10 pendejos prefieren escuchar justinaa barbiee jajaja

  • Almost 10 minutes... One better than the other... Speechless......

    ...EPIC!

  • 4:52 best part ! Think about Cliff its almost like a tribute

  • they dont get rich from selling albums they make money by playing fuck loads of gig's

  • @DiabolicalMinds Your dumb, most of an artists money comes from the albums they produce.

  • @itsmark123 ok, you win....

  • To live is to die, but love and have them die is a form of suicide.

  • Piracy or not. They need no more money , unless their materialistic ego drains all their funds. Most bands you hear, well they live in mansions, have NICE fucking cars, never have to worry about money. THEY DO get money from selling records its just that labels take like fucking 80% ( not a valid statistic). But they ARE millionaires. I dont know about you but I could live the rest of my life with just a little under 1 mil. Fuck *their* money.

  • this song is from when metallica was real and in the hearts of those who truly loved hard metal..some might remember the real matallica before they became sellouts, like they said they never would till this album made em rich, they were the best till they did this album.it makes you wonder if they never became rich woud their music still be as good.everything after this album sucks........

  • @mykawirocks during the time of this album all they cared about was there music and then they wanted to go to commercial metal and released the black album. but dude just imagine if they came out with another album like justice instead how bigger theyd probably be?

  • 4:52 part ALWAYS makes me cry.

When i hear it i just wont to be ,

and it reminds me the best Moments of my live ... :)

  • @zxcmateo so true it makes me think about cliff to

  • Well, this would be number 4. But even then, this isn't considered an instrumental by most people. To me it is, though.

  • this was instrumental number 4 wasn't it? (Anesthesia, The Call of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live is to Die)

  • @viperdawg41192 Yea man that's right, I don't know about load and reload and st anger, but I'm pretty sure suicide and redemption is there fifth

  • @viperdawg41192 You're right. Don't rely on what people on here say.

  • its not for moneys sake its for the future, I my self am a musician and if lars ulrich had not have went to court for musics sake to stop people from stealing music there would be no music in the future because young artists wouldnt be able to get up enough funds to be able to even record their music becuse of him i have a chance to make music and for that i revere him. maybe if you knew a thing about music you would understand this.maybe next time you will change your mind about this

  • @rushxanthem im with you on this one 2 if lars did not sue metallica would not be here because they would have ran out of cash by now. think about it people they have family's to support.

  • Are you for real!!?? How old are you guys? 4!? You really believe that shit!? Nobody makes money from sellig records but the label. That's why bands and "artists" have to tour, there's their only income. Why do you think there are people like BSB N sync Biebier Hanna M and gaga etc.. in this for? It's not for the love for the music...As long as we buy their albums label records will keep bringing us shit like that. Piracy will help corporations stop currupting art.

  • I am pro Piracy, I say let's all support it. Thus there won't be more artists and bands, as the ones I mentioned, that are in the game for the love of the money and not the music.

Besides, piracy helps musicians reach new markets and followers.

  • @MarqGerra You find it fair that a band spend Hundreds of Thousands of dollars to record an album, and for them to get NOTHING in return because people downloaded it?

  • @ilikehockey13 CORRECTION! Just thousands. The first Megadeth album, with all the money that goes to the band, the equipment, and the actual recording combined was only $8,000.

  • @the0guy0next0door And that was what, '84-'85? You dont think that there could POSSIBLY be a difference 25 years later?

  • @ilikehockey13 Well, nowadays, the money involved is probably around the $40,000- $80,000 for a band as big as Metallica. Remember, the money they make is solely out of recording and touring. Not the actual sales of the records.

  • @rushxanthem, If you are really worried about futurre of music then don't stop playing, or performing. But don't tell me that piracy is bad for it, because is not. On the contrary, that is how all new artists start in the first place. Selling their own albums first-hand. Until a label wants them to go global and make them sign a contract that benefits nobody but the label. And they are the ones that really are STEALINGS people's music. The proof is that nobody "makes it" until they got singed.

  • @MarqGerra i Agree with the fact that the label steals your money and also that the companys try to make you sound "the way they want you to" to me the only true music is the music that you and or your band writes/composes/performs..etc in my opinion to call people like lady gaga or those superficial pop stars "artists" is an insult to real musicians like Neil Peart or John Petrucci.

  • the best part starts at 4:30

    amazing

    R.I..P Cliff

  • Well I'm sick of bands releasing shitty albums, so fuck all this bullshit. Pirate to preview, buy it if you respect the sound.

  • @daviddemola What I do is download a song or two from a album then buy it later, but not from Walmart, they suck with album releases.

  • I see you're kissing Lars Ulrich's ass..

  • love this song RIP cliff!!

  • My Fav Part Starts At 4:52

  • This song is amazing, especially the intro.

    KICKASS!

  • @shauncFs some of metallicas introers are actually parts of other classical songs that were classical from differetn places.you can hear some of metallica songs are inspired by orchestral compositions

  • yeah its bad to pirate, but most music a band gets is from their tours, not the sales of songs. The record company is who your taking from, the multi-billion dollar companies wouldn't care from the loss of 99 cents. learn the facts bro :)

  • I understand wanting to help the artists, but most of the time I refuse to buy music from an artist unless I see them live where I can actually help support the band rather than supporting the recording label. I've been to concerts where the bands only do it for the music, not for the money. Those are the people that deserve my money and those are the people I will give my money. No chance in hell I am supporting the selfish pricks at the big label.s

  • Not a bad song on the AJFA album

  • One of the ways, Metallica came up, was by people making dubs of thier cassettes and passing them to thier friends. That's how I first heard them and don't worry, Mettalica got their money's worth from me, with merchandise, concert tickets, and cd purchases. Some of thier early cd's twice because they had been lost or damaged. Well until the Black album, then they sucked. If old school Metallica, time traveled to the future, they would beat the hell out of their future selfs.

  • @JRebel206 Duh, 20 year olds vs. 50 year olds. Who do you think would have more energy? Also if that could happen, they could probably make even St.Anger sound amazing. It would be cool to hear All Nightmare Long from 80's Metallica, but unless a time machine is made it will never happen. Probably.

  • @cubby3o5 I think you're right man. James is now almost 50 and his voice doesn't sound as great at live concerts as 28 years ago when they realeased their 1st studio album, right? But they still want to play and make music and I think that's good for us

  • RIP Cliff Burton...

  • Truly inspired...

  • really great performance! but the one of your mother last night also!

  • maybe originally for music and then needing the money. but selling tracks at zia or walmart or whatever is a bonus

  • ...i clearly stated the the majority of the income is from being signed to a label. and making music is making music, it can be your career, but the point is that you should make music to make music. anyone who only makes music for money (biebers) is out there for money, not music

  • I see nothing wrong with a band wanting to make money for the work they did. You want to get paid for your job right? well, so does Metallica. Being Metallica is their job and they (like everyone else) expect a check for doing that job. The person that said artists make money from shows obviously has no idea how that works. Sure, they make money on shows but that's not where the bulk of their money comes from. I would venture to say that they make less than 20% of their incomes from shows

  • @Pinion512 -- yes! fuck these slow minded fools who simply forget that making music and sharing the art is a job, a damn hard job. they say we should get it for free....lets see those morons contribute to the pile of free work.../\/\etal up all our asses \m/

  • @Pinion512 you are wrong. Artist make most of their money from live shows. Even newbies to the music industry know that. Less than 20% your insane.

  • @JRebel206 so you think that the 10's of millions some bands make a year is from concerts? That's the insane part. Having done some contracting work with venues I know that bands are not getting rich from putting on shows. they play shows as "advertisement" for cd's. Why do you think most bands (most, not all) do not tour until they have new music out or coming out?

  • @Pinion512 ok maybe that's true for some bands and bands that are really big but there are still a lot of them, that make most of the money touring, especially now, since the music industry has changed so much and it's less about albums and more about singles. That's what I was taught, in a two year music business, program. I will admit most of my experience in the music industry, is from the hip hop world, where this is true. Especially underground artist, who make most of their money over seas.

  • I am german, and i love metallica..cliff burton was the best, and he IS the best...fuck rob trilou

  • i suppose if you're justin beiber or whatever, then youre probably going to want to kill anyone who takes you're music without paying a dollar a song, or 14 an album. beware beibers, people are going to STEAL YOUR PRECIOUS ART WORK!

  • if i produced music(which i do), all i would want to know, is whether or not people were listening to aside from my own satisfaction of creating something. an artist wouldn't care where someone picked up his/her music. who downloads a song that they don't like?

  • when some signs to a label, they are making a shit ton of money, album sales help, but the majority of the money an artists make is from touring and being signed to a record label. any artists who are going to be offended by someone who is downloading songs, clearly only want them to pay THEM money through buying.

  • first of all, a real artist should only make music for one thing, and that is to make music. now obviously making music for money is very important. how much money do you think they make from touring?

  • 8 fuckers

  • Best part 6:16 - 7:25.

I will kick my ass, if I don't see them live the next time.

  • Great artists when they were on their peak, still one of the best on stage, but that thing about royalties is making me sick, especially when it comes from multibillionaires like Metallica. I'm sorry but if money is the only reason an artist is producing music, then he shouldn't be called an artist. The great achievements of the human community should be free for everyone to enjoy and communicate and no crumbling music company is gonna make me change my mind about it.

  • @giorgio797 dude i swear i thought the exact same thing when i saw the intro about pirating. i been playing guitar 5 years and i play gigs and open mics for my own satisfaction of sharing music...thats why everyone starts playing. cuz if u start only for the money ur music becomes soulless anyway. and if ur already sharing ur music with millions money shouldnt be a problem.

  • @giorgio797 Amen!

  • @giorgio797 I assume, being the paragon of virtue that you are, you refuse to accept a paycheck for your job. Unless, of course, you're referring solely to other people's achievements.

  • @giorgio797 look its not the artists as in metallica its their fucking record company not them.. so get that straight.

  • @giorgio797 but thats their job dude

  • @giorgio797 So I guess you work ad-honorem at your job? Everyone should have a right to your efforts for free? Many "achievements" the world over are motivated (and possible) because of money so get over it.

  • @giorgio797

i hope you know that many REAL bands(anything before 2000 mainly) dont care about HOW much money they make they get mad cus if you take their music for free they dont have any income and that means they cant afford to do what they love so they will either be forced to quit because theyre poor or become homeless with nothing at all...........also metallica arent multibillionares combined together they only really have a little over 5 mill.............thats actually not alot

  • @giorgio797 You must be a raging homosexual liberal then. Surprise surprise.

  • @giorgio797 If that's why you think they made St. Anger, you are wrong, they made they as a release for their pent up anger, that's why its so... I want to say harsh.

  • @giorgio797 Re all the Napster BS....Lars had a point.....does ANYONE work for free ? do you ? do movie stars ? union musicians ? professional athletes ? they are allowed to make money, this is america, I dont mind paying for music, hell i pay for everything else. They are millionaires because they are GOOD. Try getting NFL football players to play for free, or police and firemen to respond to emergencies for free. Good luck.

  • @giorgio797 That would be great if the music just leaped out of these guys but it doesn't. They spend months in the studio. Their families don't see them for days at time. They're all at each others throats until they put the album out. Then they spend a chunk of time on tour to promote it, especially Metallica. It's a fun job, but it's still a job and they deserve to be paid for their efforts. Having said that, they should make the stuff they made millions off already free for the public.

  • @giorgio797 listen Bob Marley then you tell me

  • @giorgio797 i agree man

  • Why would anyone pirate Metallica, when they can just go the store and pay a mere twenty or thirty dollars for an album? Or when in town, as they often are, one can be honored to hand over a good 150-200 dollars to see them live. It's money well spent!

  • its sad cus its cliffs last song

  • @1fisherpro actually its a tribute to him he was dead 3 years before :(

jason was on bass for this album

  • I eat, sleep and drink music and I am always promoting good music, to everybody and especially, people, who are lazy and more in to the mainstream. I am constantly giving people mix tapes . So I don't feel bad about pirating music because I make those artist money, by turning people on to them. I never bootleg music from the Northwest, because that is my home and my community and I support my community. One way I support my community buying their music. I also buy my favorite artists music.

  • look my video dyer's eve no drums sound /watch?v=oCcxzRddx90

  • if downloading music is stealing then we need to close every bookstore and library in the world. The xerox machine must be the most illegal thing in the world! Why did they even invent CD and DVD burners in the first place? I own pretty much every Metallica album out and I purchased them all legally. I'm not saying we should slight artists out of money, but they should go after their producers instead of we consumers. How much are the middle men picking their pockets for?

  • I held my breath from 4:26 to 6:00. i could have went longer but i didn't want to.. lol who has a better score?

  • i'm crying |*|-|*|

  • bands make little money of album sales, they make most of their money from performing... if more people are downloading, more people are drawn to the bands music therefore more people are going to see the shows. Pirating is the record companies problem

  • @homesliceman1 Right on man, I was trying to enjoy a good song, but I couldn't help but feel like I was being yelled at. Ruined the whole mood.

  • @ShokanPrince812 haha exactly, also isn't making a video about pirating and uploading the entire song a little hypocritical? were all listening to this song for free and the band isnt making a dime

  • @homesliceman1 That sounds right on the money. lol

  • @homesliceman1 actually the band is probably receiving Royalties for it being up here

  • wuddup wit all this anti piracy shit at the beggining. is that shit even necessary. jus worry about this awesome song

  • Comment removed

  • Viva La YouTube song ripper

  • speechless ..

  • I love pirating music. If you're rich as shit and complain about pirating (Lars) fuck you. Make music for fame or entertainment, not money.

  • Can some one tell me where I can find the 10:48 long studio version?

  • @mozleyman That's actually The Outlaw Torn that your thinking of. The end of it was cut from the album Load because it was so long. It's not this song, but this song also cut the end off for time so it scares the shit out of you when it cuts to Dyers Eve.

  • I can speak for most people when I say when we download music we don't plan to sell it on the streets....we plan to just listen to the music....

  • @Elmeromero1 that may be true but wouldnt you want to support the band by paying for it? If you like them why not support them?

  • @xerowrestling I "support" them when I go see them in their concerts, and when my hearing is impaired for a day because of THE HEAVY METAL.

  • viva piracy viva piratebay

  • I don't get it. You just posted "To Live is To Die" with a still picture of the AJFA album cover? Plus, your pretentious little anti-piracy message is a bit much. It's not exactly difficult to upload a song by a famous band is it? Oh and before you get back on your soapbox about 'piracy,' how about copyright infringement? No? Does that ring any bells? Don't get high and mighty about piracy when you've infringed copyright. That aside, I love the Instrumental, don't see this video's point though.

  • @daveydxduff well lets learn about copyright infringement. copy right infringement is the unauthorized use or sale of someone elses finished product to make a profit. i believe that would make this man here just fine since i dont think he is collecting a pay check from youtube. but your right, we all know about piracy and making a note in your song wont do anything to deter those that already pirate stuff

  • METAL MASTERPIECE!!!

  • This song is one of the reasons why metallica is what is....

  • lol nobody cares about that anti-piracy shit

  • @LifeInSwitch fuck you, seriously, just go hang yourself.

  • RIP Cliff!! You were the real son of God!!

  • R.I.P clifford lee burton 1962 - 1986 we all miss you

  • If there was no such thing as piracy, Metallica (and ofcourse other bands) would give concerts for free :|

  • 4:54-5:50 hit me :'( rip cliff burton <3

  • 4:54-5:50 is just awesome.

  • I love instrumentals its lets them focus on the music better to create a masterpeace

  • if an artis was to earn no money then there would be no reason to ocntinue to perform???

    FUUUUCKKKK YOUUU BIIIEEEETTTAAAACHHH.

I'll rip it and i will distribute it as much as i can.

Money is the last thing a REAL Artist will consider.

    Money is for recording companies.

    DAMAGE INC you fucking jew

  • the hidden text is "For Cliff the best bassist in existence." do i win?

  • I have hardly ever heard something beautiful like 0:00 till 0:57 ♥♥♥

  • But what if the album is bought second hand?

  • This is the deepest, most emotionally powerful song I know, and my sister thinks it's pointless.

  • Rest In Piece Cliff I know God took you cause he needed bass leasons...........Never forgot man NEVER!

  • hate to tell you guys but this song is NOT technically an instrumental. There are lyrics to it however the lyrics are spoken not sung. The lyrics are actually a poem that was written by Cliff Burton before he died.

  • @948hurley As it would appear the poem was actually written by a fella called Paul Gerhardt.

  • gvg

  • what a great tune :D

  • Do a toke at 4:26 and see how long you can hold it haha wicked part of the song, one of those parts you feel more than you hear kno wat I mean.....

  • @JustinLB82 to layte. i did a toke at 4:20 before i payed it ;)

  • @JustinLB82 Something beyond mortality...

  • @JustinLB82 Something immortal...

  • @JustinLB82 i totally agree man

  • Comment removed

  • actually i dont think the musicians make that much money from the records, of course, if they sell 100000 copies they get 5 cents each... than probably, but musicians get paid for playing shows... there they get 10 dollars from every ticket... you do the math...

recordings are more than a commercial to persuade people to go to concerts...

im not trying to advertise pirating... listening to this song without paying might already be considered as pirating... so... well you know? :D

  • awesome, but i like Call of Ktulu better. But thats just my humble opinion...

  • I play Bass cause of Cliff R.I.P Cliff Burton

  • Pirating is cool with me...I'm sure it's not that bad for Metallica....They have fucking billions..

  • @metalocalypse301 you dont remember lars ulrich freakin out on napster a coule years back?

  • @metalocalypse301 pirateing is stealing
