One of the greatest Capcom (and arcade) titles of all-time! This game had everything: combined robots, awesome BGM, and the perfect balance of gameplay and difficulty. I beat the game on one coin back when I was 17 after trying for weeks. A beautiful moment in my life. Love. This. Game. I still play it on MAME 20+ years later.
Almost 2 credited the Turbographax 16 version a few min before typing this. Its a lot easier due to the Level 3 shotgun doing as advertised and destroying shots. The occult goats head at the end creeps me out. Kinda feels out of place in a robot suits vs aliens game.
wicked game....80`s....bunking of school to go play this....they should release a new version of this..as these were good game...unlike the games now which can be finished in 2-3 hours
OMG Brings back memories..i was in the army 1987/1989 and i played this game on arcade machine. Took me about 3 1/2 weeks and a lot of cash to finish the game with over 3000000 points...no one ever beat that record :)
Hey did you also notice at the end of the game, they spelled "Congratulations" wrong?! And also, the guy that designed the game has the first name "Poo" lol
Damn this was my all-time favourite arcade game! I loved everything about it :D I see you managed to complete the game on one credit, but did you ever complete the game on one LIFE?? I did :D Only once though lol
I beat this today on my modded PSP using 2 credits. I will try for a 1 credit win! Thanks for the inspiration, this game is my greatest favorite of the 80's arcades.
brilliant game! my lousy arcade had it set to insane difficulty - still managed to finish it often - and yes minus the tip of the fingernail everytime!
used the upgraded 3-way for pretty much everything, found the shotgun didn't seem to nullify enemy shots otherwise facing the 2nd boss would've been easy, at least that was fixed in the PC engine ports.
Indeed my all-times favourite, I used to finish it with a coin too, in easy mode of course haha :D if you play in normal mode is very difficult because almost every enemy fires at you from the beginning and it is a nightmare in hard mode.
I went to the arcades to play it once in a day everyday, I loved the music, specially that on the fourth stage (the longest) it was heroic, almost sad and that on the 7th stage (the one that looks like lava) sounded great!
Ah the memories...I used to play this all the time at the arcade when I was a kid (omg 20+ years ago!). I could finish on one coin (about 75-80% of the time) and it was INSANE at the end. I preferred to use the machine gun auto while combined and then use the 3-way as the back up. Classic Capcom goodness. Thanks for posting!
I LOVE this game. One of my passions along with R-Type & Rolling Thunder. At the time, it was the closest thing to playing a Robotech-like game (Alpha-Beta fighters). Man, like 20 years ago. Anyway, my bud's and I would get out after class (Math 210 - CalculusI I think) and meet up at the Student Commons where one drop would get me to the end. Onlookers would gather like "The Last StarFighter" or something. I wasn't even that good I thought. (Ah! the glory days when my reflexes were young).
Wow, that must have taken nerves of steel! That was awesome. I also think the music in the tg16 version sounds better but it wasn't all bad. Thanks for the vid.

Oh yeah, I preferred to play with the Player 2 robot (better combined weapon/boomerang 8 way) with Auto 2 (straight rapid fire).

I remember playing this game on 1 of my summer vacations.
Always liked robots, so this game called my atention right away.
Those times the TV series Robotech was also popular.

Another tip to help you finish this game.
When you collect the alpha beta pickup it gives you 2 hits
So if you see one and you have 1 hit left ; get hit and then pick up
This means you 2 hits again.

you're playing on easy mode. arcades were usually set on "hard" so enemies shot bullets at you from the very beginning

It is on the easiest setting. No need for cheating.
I practiced quite a lot before making this video.
Besides, if i cheat in game, I mention it in description.
By the way, I beat the game almost everyday (with some continues) in the arcade about 20 years ago and it wasn't on the easiest setting.
