I just finished the book, how close is the film compared to the book? The book was amazing, and the bits I gathered from the trailer look dead on,I picture Rainbird looking younger and more Indian-looking,though.
The book is amazing, one of my favorite books, and although I have not seen this movie, it looks like an extremely poor adaptation of such a great book.
Sure, it's corny, but Stephen King is a masterful book writer and we enjoy the films as a result, He's just THE MASTER OF HORROR, that's all! I want this on BluRay, about time. I saw it theatrically when it was new and recorded the TV supplements at the time...to Beta cassette!
Seriously, theres a real life firestarter in Philippines..
I heard it on news,it's a little girl named Rose and nobody can explane it how can she start a fire and how can she predict the time if there's a fire ,it' kinda creeps me out in watching the video footage when she starts a fire
@JRproduction101 King says part of this story comes from Charles Forte's old "Book of the Damned", it chronicled various mysteries and stories he could write about at that time, it's pretty interesting, look into his biography! This was back in 1984 IIRC, King was asked about it on US TV
This is such a sad movie and book. She goes through what every child fears and worse! A lot of stephen king stories are sad as well as scary.(Example:Carrie)
@rainbowmuppet They're both awfully similar. That would be a kick-ass battle for sure. Besides, both movies have a girl who discovers powers and uses them for many reasons. Crazy.
I read the book and it was awesome and scary as hell, but I wasn't sensing that form the movie. I mean Rainbird look just like another Native American, where in the book he was very scary to look at and more evil than anyone else at the Shop. He was the top reason I found the book to be scary.
@BPgamemaster12 I'm reading the book right now, and Rainbird does sound scarier in the book. Tall, strong, menacing. In the movie, he's creepy, but not tall or strong. More like a wise old man.
@RandomUsername010 yeah but in the original xmen they werent hailed as mutant freaks they were hailed as heroes it was only till the late 80's till the series launched that anti mutant agenda
Did this movie remind anyone of Akira? i mean it's very similar to that awesome Japanese animated Sci-fi movie as they both have telekinetic/pyrokinetic people in it
This has been my favorite movie for nearly 30 years. I was 12 when this movie first came out. Unfortunatley, I was not old enough to see it in the theaters when it did. I have been dreaming ever since of being able to see it in the theaters at least once. I did read very recently that a remake IS in the works. However, it will NOT be like the original. The character of Charlie will have more of an "Edge" as articles point out. It will be coming out in 2014.
Magnolia 296, I agree completely. Drew Barrymore was a brilliant child actress, and I think to this day she still is an amazing actress. And yes, the '80's were fantastic. I haven't really left the decade in a sense, haha. Yes, a phenomenal book and film.
@connolly48 Hi, the movie has an "R" rating and that's probaly due to the content.Came out in 1984.But it's a well done movie.I saw it as a kid and still love it years later.Drew Barrymore was awesome.I read the book which was good...but movies based on novels are usually differnet.I mean look at Stephen King's The Shining...he so disliked the original and even Children of the Corn.More a chance for film maker's to put on a screen what they imagine..Today it would be 14A.But a good movie
Yes, this is an amazing story and film. And Barrymore was (and is) an amazing actress. It's timeless. Everyone did a fantastic job playing their parts, and Barrymore definitely shined.
This is no fiction. Not too long in the past there was a girl who have the power to burn things by means of looking only to it but it is not her fault because she also cannot control her pyrokinesis like the girl on the video so they put her into a mental hospital with a special ward which resist fire only for her.
The part that really sticks in my mind (because my mother did it, without telekinesis) was the scene in this movie where Vicky (Charlie's mother) pulls out a pan of something from the oven and Charlie sets it on fire...
It was older movies like this and Scanners that inspired Stan Lee to create the X-Men. The original ones were Children of the Damned and such. Then Stan likened X-Men to the Jewish Holocaust. Love the concepts behind this sci-fi theme.
@JVcrow44 Definitely Charlie. Without any hesitation. Charlie is so much more powerful. The crazy scientist estimated that she could eventually split the earth into two halves. And she was a child, he said that when she is going to be teenager, she will be even more powerful.
@lookintothesun007 I'm going by the book, she had telepathy in the book, her thoughts were projected throughout the whole town, and before she died in Sue Snells arms she entered Sue's mind.
This has got to be one of the corniest, dryest narrations in all of movie trailer-dom. The soundtrack is on point though. Good movie... But they forgot to mention her dad has powers too!!
@deucedot So does her Mom -also known as "The Touch"; all SK's vision (fr/ The Dark Tower saga). ;). Just one of his Constant Readers. Just think of: Lost.
Charlie! "Back off, Back off!!" I saw this way back when, I taped a bunch of interviews, including ET's behind the Scenes and both Drew with KING on morning TV interviewed. Hope to find it for my channel, it got lost some time back
Wow! SCI-FI/Thriller classic from the old good 80s. Drew Barrymore showed brilliant acting. The same with David Keith and Martin Sheen. Drew was the best kid actor I've ever seen - way better than Macaulay Culkin, Elijah Wood and Dakota Fanning together.
