Yes but Van Cleef was basically a "bad guy" in this.
He became what we in America call "a sacrificial lamb".
It's just film making showing good VS bad.
I didn't agree in this film though but that's how it goes.

The ending is what tops off a really good film. Gives it truly epic feel, the characters change and unexpected plot. Great spaghetti film.

What I didn't like is (SPOILER) is he get's offed by his student at the end.
