I only got to hear The Small Faces after reading Paul Weller's opinion on the band's greatness, now they're one of my favourites.I bought The Autumn Stone and Ogden's Nutgone Flake albums on CD and both are brilliant!
I just happened to notice that Ian is standing holding the sticks but am I mistaken in hearing the percussion or is that the striking of the accoustic guitar?
Just a great band. Steve had such control over that soaring voice and Ronnie Lane was definitely an underrated writer and musician. I think maybe because the Beatles dominated the scene so much at that time that here in the US this band was largely overlooked. RIP Ronnie and Steve your music will live forever.
Couldn't agree more!!!! Not only are these guys the most underrated band ever, they are simply the best band ever! No one can match their blend of raw energy, soul and confidence. Pure joy! Marriot has to be the coolest guy to ever strut the stage.
I dont see why people think they are 'underated'. I was a teen in the 60's and they were considered up there with the major British bands: Beatles, Stones, Who etc. And since the 60's that respect for them has grown !....I dont see any evidence of them being underated.
@pocketbookjulie: I was thinking UK really. They were certainly considered one of our top 4 bands when I was growing up. Not in the biggest selling (I mean The Hollies, The Searchers and others outsold them), but in terms of quality. The US didnt have 'mods and rockers' , and, where I cam from , they were THE mod group , (not The Who as portrayed by the media).
I have this whole thing on an old VHS video, it always made me alugh the longer it goes on, the more steve keeps buggering up the lip synching, and in parts seems to be singing over the top.
Ogdens Nut Gone Flake, one of the greatest albums of all time. Bought it the day it came out in America. Killed me they never came to the states to tour it. Finding these videos after 40 years is unbelievable! With the narrator even!
Interesting, the US never really got a full exposure to this band and obviously we missed a great deal of imaginative, progressive music by a versatile and talented group. Thanks for sharing.
sure, the most underrated band in Canada and the U.S.A., the Europeans loved them. This is my personal favorite Album of the Sixties, Steve and Ronnie, R.I.P. an Cheers Lads.
thanx john where ever you are . for introducing me to this l.p. i have it now on cd and just love it cant belive i used to play this orig . at your place.. awsome ..
Stones? Beatles? No. There are only 4 Small Faces! And only one Steve! And Ronnie! The best of all time, including the 67 delusion period. God bless us all, on the dusty road to God.
Two amazing voices in one band... Steve Marriot obviously has one of the best voices in rock and roll history, but Ronnie Lane's voice was beautiful as well.
just bought Ogden's nut gone flake and love a lot of the songs.....BUT, Stanley Unwin is annoying talking between tracks. In the day it may have been acceptable as part of the concept of the album..I don't think it works all these years later.
@bendobrin if we could transport ourselves I would choose to be in the San Francisco psychedelic era with Eric Burdon and the Animals...... in 1967 doing soooo much LSD with Eric Burdon.....
I saw Steve Marriott live many times after the Small Faces, sometimes in small pubs with only 50 or 60 people in the audience,he always played his heart out.Sadly missed !!!!
It just seems there is no justice sometimes. I mean Small Faces -the greatest band NOT to make it in America - to perform such songs at a par excellence performance. I show these to younger people at work and they are astounded to hear such great unusual music from the 60's rather than much trash today.
i love this band, this video, that singer !
