I remember being at a bar across from the quad city downs.Al van zee was passed out face first at the bar.I'm having my beer when he comes out of it.He looks at me and goes" what the fuck you looking at?" Miss you al, wherever you are.
Wow, I didn't know Elizabeth Alex worked for them. She's on NBC Action News here in town in the evenings. I heard somebody say that she's planning on retiring this year, though.
Open smacks of former sister KCCI from a couple years earlier. Yet they had been sold off separately. There are a bunch in this same style with this same transition, such as WJKS and KNDU. Same graphics house?
I grew up 6 blocks from the station . I used to see Al van zee get booze ( I think) and snacks at the 16th st. gas station before they shoot the evening news. He was a great guy, but you could see the struggle within him..( i was about 10-12 at the time) but I knew even then. I ran into him at an air show after he was dropped, mid 90's he worked in IT for a while. Now he's in SD, and doing good.
Miss those old WQAD day, Neil still working there, elizabeth Alex at a different station, Al Van Zee retired, along with Jim Albreck. That set is the same as today as well, the bridge in this video, is where the WQAD logo is, Neil's side is the current bridge side. Pretty neat!

1990 was first year in US and also my first experience with American TV.
I looked forward to nightly news in Moline every night just for him.
Wonder where is he now.
I had a big crush on him.

Elizabeth Alex was at my hometown area's FOX station WFLX-29 in West Palm Beach on the 10:00 news which was produced by CBS affiliate WPEC-12.
Most recently, she was at the NBC station in Kansas City
