  • texting on mobile phones will be the next big thing. In fact, I think moble phones will eventually replace PC's over time. Apps will take over browsers also

  • @vatpil59 the cloud will replace everything!

  • I think email has it's own purpose. It doesn't require an immediate response. Email fits its name; it is electronic mail. I like adding weblinks to email to direct people to certain websites. And I like attaching files and pictures to illustrate what I'm talking about in the email. Also, it can be used as an electronic paper trail so you can go back over prior emails to make sure you understand what someone is talking about. Smart, simple and effective. A foundation of digital communication.

  • @vidform this should be top comment. Very true.

  • facebook replaces email... easily

  • @PeeWeeLeagueGaming But it not going die off.

  • @PeeWeeLeagueGaming Except the information sent on e-mail isn't sold off to advertisers and the governement.

  • @derick1259 Your argument is invalid. You can turn that off in preferences.

  • @PeeWeeLeagueGaming It doesn't really make a difference if you turn it off in the preference, all the information still goes to the IAO.

  • He drives slower than my grandmother!!!

  • Do you by any chance have an iOS vs Android video?

  • No way, E-mail itself is a huge part of the mobile market. It's the most efficient way to communicate now. I use it for RSS with blogs, and for my clients when I'm working on a project. It'd be like thinking that the phone won't be used, these different means of communication are here to stay. They solve a problem, and communication is an awfully big one that e-mail addresses.

  • Email is even MORE Essential than Snail Mail. It may evolve somehow but its not vanishing. Too many people are reliant on it. Because of Email, the United States Postal Service is suffering a financial mess. The USPS has to revamp its whole structure and eventually be limited to Package delivery - if FedEx and UPS dont put it out of business all together.

  • email is the oldest technology on the internet and also one of the most needed of them all.

many don't know this but the US army invented email in the late 60's for battlefield communication.

  • What kind of car does he have?

  • @datnewkiidftw I think Chris drives a Toyota Prius

  • The people who thing email will be obsolete in 5 years are born in the 20's.

People who born in the 90's: smart!

People who born in 20's: are dumb!

  • Do you think Gmail will surpass all the other mail programs...it is the best!

  • Email was originally created for personal (friend to friend) messages, not for sending me 10 000 spam advertisements a day.

  • skype is the easiest way to get a hold of me if you know me.

  • As much as I want e-mail to die. It won't. What will replace it well. E-mail has replaced regular mail. What will replace e-mail. E-mail is dead to a lot of us because of Facebook, IM and other social networks. But! E-mail is electronic mail. YOU CANNOT DESTROY IT BECAUSE IT IS A CONCEPT!

  • I think email will be present in two forms:

-Gmail (Email that offers many other functions such as file sharing)

    -Facebook (and other social networks.)

  • I always have 3 pinned tabs opened in google chrome for Gmail, YouTube, and Facebook.

  • I really found the idea of no more phone number, but a cyber presence really interesting. I am old enough to remember The days when your phone prefix was a Status Symbol!!!! (in fact I remember the days when there was no prefix!!!! Then it was names: hunter8- 4567. Then 488- and that too was a "good" phone number. Today, the only-imagined has come to be. Face Time. AIM. Email Face Book. Twitter. No I don't think that email will die off too soon. There are private things people need to communic

  • I don't think so. I think of email as the formal way of communication of this time. The phone to me is more informal and therefore relaxed, where as email is basically sending a letter and that is classy :)

  • email will be around for a long time too many ppl have it. its now ubiquitous like having a phone number.

  • well id say we not to say its obsolete so we stop getting spam

  • I checked my email while watching this. While not realizing also. Pretty...Epic lol.

  • Not a chance! Just like everything else E-mail will improve over the years...I know that there is like Facebook, Twitter etc...But think about for the companies. I'm sure they will be a lot of companies, elderly and people who are not that too good with computers that will still use the E-mail facilities!

  • @colinmreid Exactly. I use facebook and email more than anything but email is person to person. Often, facebook privacy is void.

  • its FACEBOOK!

  • 0:03 Roadhouse Blues!

  • Email as a platform is a fantastic experience and i honestly don't think anything that could be invented that will kill email but rather improve upon a simple idea of people being able to send messages to other people in a very simple and easy way.

In the last 5 years what technology or service has be created that has made anything else obsolete? I know i cant think of one that has stopped EVERYBODY using what they were.

  • the person in the box car Honda Element to pirillo's left at 2:40 to 2:55 was taunting him to speed up and/or race lol. A FREAKING BOX HONDA ELEMENT! ( Scion XB is even more of a box-on-wheels=fugly and NON aerodynamic) FLIP HIM THE BIRD CHRIS :p LOL claim in your defense you were playing Angry Birds too much

  • I love email, I never stop reading and sending them, I would love to see email addresses standardized across all mediums such as to call a phone use a email not a number and the same for all other services would be great I think

  • i dont care if email becomes obsolete " which usually is in the eyes of the elistist punks" or not. If i DONT want to talk to someone and/or see their faces ( video chat, skype etc) I WILL use email. They dont like it. THEY DONT have to communicate with me. Doesn't hurt me one bit.

  • 50 years maybe 5 years no chance

  • I completely agree with you, Chris. I think that email will remain the dominating means of communicating over the web, and I definitely like the idea of having a set and verified online address. Personally, I hate using video/voice services - especially on my phone -so I'd probably end up a mute hermit if it faded into the obsolete void of cyberspace.

  • I use email alot especially since its sync'd to my phone. It def will not be obsolete within 5 years.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Chris! I love your 5 years prediction video! :) It is always interesting to listen to, and it is exciting to see how ti actually turns out in 5 years. :D Keep it up.

  • def not. my reasoning is where would amazon send their receipts when u buy shit online.

  • I use imap - so i am checking my email every second :D

  • Letters still haven't disappeared. TBH this was a pretty dumb question.

  • I check my email around twice a week XD

  • Hey Chris what is your opinion on the idea of every person being assigned an Online iD by the government that they have to sign into everytime they get online and having their Online history attached to their iD and every site would only require your ID pass code and account number instead of Email and password or

    Screen name and password?

i heard about something like this being planned and i wanted to know your idea on it

What is your thought of this?

  • I check email about 3-4 times a day

  • Awesome video Chris!

  • Skype doesn't require wifi anymore :) lol

  • I check mine like Once every 10 minutes or so, but granted I have my email on my smart phone, as well I have linked all my emails to my mail application. As well I have growl, so I always know when I get an email!

  • @lockergnome: your thoughts on software freedom? Do you think we should be permitted or prohibited to share, change and study every program we use?

  • @lockergnome Do you think social network messaging could replace e-mail? You've got the inbox, for people to reach you offline, and if you want to find a person or company, all you gotta do is search the name. If there's someone you want to message, but you don't have their e-mail, that can be quite a hassle...

  • I don't think email will go away for a while but I hope it does. lol

  • Emails won't go obsolete because all these websites you sign up for will usually require email.

  • Email already is the snail mail of the last decade.

  • I use email a lot too. I hope email doesn't become obsolete. For email to be a good form of communication, people have to check their inbox more often. Many people only check once per day, and some people check even less often than that.

  • Skype work on 3G u boner

  • Email will not die in next years, because its one of the fundaments of todays communication. - Who remembers phonenumbers of everyone he knows?

Emails are more easy to remember (depending on the choosen adress of course) and emailadresses are often used as user id's on web services.

I think email will evolve in security and so on (at least it should), but instant messaging was the only thing I gave the opportunity to outdate emails and even that did not happen. Both things coexist very well.

  • Of course not!! It's like saying smoke signalling will make a come back! Most of electronic transactions require email for invoicing etc, etc social networks and text messaging have their limitations as well

  • I think it will become obsolete to Facebook. I think Facebook will change from a social network to a social utility

  • I don't even think snail mail will every go away. Sometimes you need to send registered letters and sometimes you need to send private emails through pop3 servers.

  • I love that all the cars on your left keep passing you.

  • @coldchickenfeet That's what the cars on one's left are MEANT to be doing. :|

  • @coldchickenfeet its called the fastlane -_-

  • @coldchickenfeet the left lane is usaully the fast lane

  • @coldchickenfeet

Hey everybody! Chris Pirillo here with two hands on the wheel, four eyes on the road, and ten under the speed limit!

  • @coldchickenfeet left lane is for passing lol

  • @coldchickenfeet He's a mac user.

  • live feed is down

  • WHY YOU STARTING THIS SHIT AGAIN MUSIC ON TOP OF YOUR VIDEO AGAIN YOU DONT STOP WHY DO YOU HAVE IT ON THERE AGAIN WHY YOU BEING AN ASS

  • question : what are your opinions on net neutrality

  • SO CHRIS WHY DONT YOU SEND MY MESSAGE ABOUT MY 3 QUESTION I SEND TO YOU AND WHY CANY I SEND A COMMENT ON YOUR PAGE BOOK OR ARE YOU JUST BEING A BIG ASS HOLE

  • Question : Is unlimited internet (for all ISPs) a good thing or will it just ruin the market and the boradband speed?

  • I get an email like every five minutes.

  • Good points, and agreed.

  • lol look at how slow he's driving and everyone speeding up to pass him

  • Will Email be Obsolete in 5 Years? I sure hope not

  • @lockergnome i really need help in empire avenue, my share is 0.00, you said keep it at least 1.00, what should i do

  • CHRIS WHY DONT YOU ANSWER MY QUESTIONS THAT I SEND TO YOU ARE YOU BEING AN ASS HOLE

  • Will Christina Aguelera ever shut the hell up? I think not.

  • Once very 3 minutes :P

  • Never mind email, I'm intrigued as to what car Chris is driving!

  • "E-mail on my phone....I'd go nuts"....too true!

  • Where will the desktop be in 5 plus years?

  • No. I don't see email becoming obsolete anytime soon. It's an efficient way of communicating anytime and anywhere, and as it has been in the last few years, it's evolving. Gmail with priority mail, video chat, phone calls, and IM, Yahoo and AIM with chat.... I think it's a necessity to be honest.

  • Love email...You can respond WHEN you like , easy to manage (folder).

SMS and MMS are just popular because they are cheap ! (IMHO ) Those who dont want to sped for data plan loves Messaging.

I've try everything... and always come back to gmail...eeeeh email i mean ;)

  • Use email every day. If email died, I would lose valuable relationships with people everywhere. I talk to people I would never have met without email. Email is never going to die. There are millions of people who use it every day.

  • Newsletters are obsolete.. just a waste of space ..

  • I don't think is will be obsolete, I always use electronic mail.

  • there is already skype for ios.

  • You can really get the difference between vlogs in the car (sober) and in his office ('drunk') =)

  • @geunsjl hah nice catch

  • Check email? Apple's mail applications checks it like every 30 secs.. Multitasking people!

  • Email will never become obsolete, neither will the desktop OS, neither will the Mouse, neither will the telephone or the television, or the oven. You know why? Because they work and do their job. Nobody will go to the trouble of fixing a problem that doesn't exist.

  • I think i use Email, Phones and Texts equally (even though it would be 33.33% therefore no equal parts lol) But facebook is just to see what others are doing and organise events not for contacting someone for anything other than events.

Everyone over 21 in Australia ive met use it for quick comments pictures and events most of us still call and we have one of the worst Telco industries in the world for price.

  • Email only sucks if you need a quick response, almost no-one I know checks their email more than once a day (I speak as a student)

  • I use email...I like email. Its free, fast, easy to use and I can send stuff using it as well. I give my email out more then my phone number. My most of my clients use email and I often only deal with them via email.

  • I agree! Some people still are not able to manage their emails yet! Maybe the "new" unified Facebook messaging is the way to go...

  • Email is not going away, I am not sure if phone numbers go away but that is possible. I really don't think Email will evolve more than it is I mean, what more could you want in it? I definately think our phones will evolve I imagine we will have a system much like IM services to where you can do audio call or video call. I use the Mac OS X Mail app and it checks for email every minute automatically. Email is my primary and Favorite means of communication. When I need to call someone I VOIP.

  • I remember when Google said that Wave would replace E-mail, big fail..

  • I agree email is not going away and I would agree phone numbers might go away.

  • Question: What happens when a cop pulls you up?

  • chris why dont you send me messsage to my questions i send to you or do you think i am no good and a loser and a retart

  • It's too early to say if email will be obsolete. Everyone still uses it. Almost every time you sign up to a website or service they require email verification. Now SNAIL mail could be obsolete after the baby boomer generation is all gone.

  • I SO agree. E-Mail will evolve, but not become obsolete.

I use E-Mail all of the time as well.

  • @chrishooper68

    well i dont!

  • I don't understand the top comments! Did He not just say it wont?? What the heck haha!

  • He ran out of things to talk about.

  • I paused the video and started writing this.

My prediction is he will say yes Email will be obsolete:

I was wrong, man... rapture sucks...

  • for conversation, i use facebook messages or wall posts. i only use email for when i buy something and get a tracking number and stuff like that. i literally have no email contacts... obsolete for me!

  • will Chris Pirillo be obsolete in 5 years?????

  • Two hands on the wheel and four eyes on the road, haha. It's hard not to instantaneously like this guy. :)

  • Question: Are power Pc's obsolete?

  • Most of my e-mails notify me of messages that come from other social networks, most of which I've read before being notified.

  • slow drivers will be Obsolete in 5 years lol

  • If email went away I would be screwed.

I rely upon email + email folders at work to organize and prioritize.

  • Once a day

  • i think this is illegal in Australia (recording while driving)

  • @navez123 is it also illegal to talk to the person in the passenger seat?

  • @WinterXL No, but I get where youre coming from. This is slightly different don't you think?

  • HOW SLOW DO U DRIVE????

  • i dont think email is obsolete, but your empire avenue stock sucks and its dropping like obama's popularity

  • You're getting passed by everyone, I hate drivers like you. Lol.

  • @MarkBTW LOL. being safe while driving and recording at the same time.

  • We will all be obsolete in 5 years.

  • we all die to day

  • I agree. Email is still the major communication tool used throughout corporate life. I cannot image life without it. With all of the IM apps out there today skype included, there are too many variances to allow communication across all of these services. Email is still the de-facto "service" that is universal.

  • chris how come i can not send any comments on your facebook

  • chris do you think i am a loser please tell me

  • chris i wanta to know if you can help me out with online jobs like lockerdome youtube and some other sites too will you help me out or not

  • with the growing accessibility of new phones to average users, more people can access their email from anywhere, and that may make email even more used than it already is. I know when i got my first smart phone, i checked me email way more than i did when i didn't have a smart phone.

  • Facebook is taking over.

  • Please stop with these obsolete videos, technology is impossible to predict.

  • So, even if email became obsolete in 5 years for normal users & was replaced with phone numbers or any other means of e-communication, I can hardly see that happening to the professional sector.. I work in a big company where we have to use email every single day for almost everything! Our usernames & passwords are the company's #1 mean of authentication..

  • Will I give a crap?

  • I doubt email will ever be oblate, but it will be unrecognisable within ten years. Change, not death, is the future of email.

  • what about security??? E-Mails, has less security. it can be hacked... i mean, more easly than a cell phone.

    dont you think?

  • microsoft well purchess skype ar its well be grate?

  • I check my email probably everyday.

I think the email will not be obsolete in the next five years because, to me email is a very reliable, solid way to communicate through the internet. Also email has been around for a very long time, since the 60's and I think if something is around for a long time, it will probably continue, although not all cases.

Here is a question, How can I learn what the Geek Squad does to fix computers, without spending hundreds of dollars??

    Thanks

  • I use e-mail on browser and tab is pinned forever. E-mail is personal, not public.

  • i think that email will become bigger and bigger in the next few years

  • once a month?

  • I got an email while watching this video

  • i like the car ride videos more, for some strange reason.

  • Will Phillips screw drivers be obsolete in 5 years?

  • Email is not going anywhere...only a fool would think otherwise. Email allows you to keep a record of any communication. Voice? hahaha.

  • Youtube will turn into what Myspace did in 5 years

  • Anyone notice how many vehicles passed Chris in the background?

  • Will home phones be gone in 5 years?

  • I wonder why PGP never took off for e-mail sender verification. I certainly hope phones become obsolete, I've been considering dropping my contract and signing up with a data plan only.

  • Hopefully traditional (non-package) mail will be obsolete in 5 years, I certainly hope e-mail is here to stay for awhile.

  • QUESTION: When will human beings become obsolete?

  • @ogicabp4u That is really retarded

  • @ogicabp4u

When it finally dawns on them they are self maintaining cattle.

  • @ogicabp4u wen chris dies

  • @ogicabp4u Five years.

  • too much spam!

  • i don't check my e-mail that often because i have it sync automatically in my ipod so when i get an e-mail i check it right away.

  • What's this "Email" you speak of? Is that the predecessor to Facebook Chat?

  • Well, my personal emails, I actually do check by phone every hour when my email updates (if I have any). My WORK email, I always have open and check extremely frequently.

  • I never check my email, but i am a hardcore geek i just forget to check i wish my iphone give me a notification, or for that matter my ipad aswell

  • I check my e-mail every 30 seconds.

  • what car are you driving?

  • No

  • what kind of car do you drive?

  • We have already made writing a letter (snail mail) obsolete, we still need some kind of writing communication. If we strictly stick to video we may lose the ability to spell, LOL

  • What comes next for youtube? We have interactive games [the links to similar videos], and we have youtube 3D, but what's going to be new after that?

  • @supertaylrock1 Smell-o-vision.
