@boysforpele1989 I agree. People find reasons to fault her because of her face work, but people also fault celebrities for getting older. It's kind of a no-win. We all change as we pass through time whether naturally or by our own devices. Tori's message for me has always been one of personal responsibility. It's not her job to make us feel better about her look. She has made it her job to write good music, and she still does that. All else is, to me, secondary.
wow this was when her face actually looked normal. her plastic surgery looks awful and her face actually startles me now when i look at it,. what a shame she bought into all the stuff i never thought she would. she looks gross now.
I feel that i should add to the song analysis by pointing out that the line "could you even let it be mother mary of it all" not only references the magdalene vs. virgin mary, but is also a nod to the Beetles song "Let It Be."
This is gorgeous. When SW came out, I remember thinking that she had lost her edge. Maybe she did a little bit, but this is so genuine, so authentic & heartfelt. These days there's other stuff interfering with the music. Need I say more?
I've said it before but, in the Scarlet's Walk years, Tori's voice and presence were really beautiful. I mean, they're always great, but, there was just something about these few years.
you have to be careful with gnosticism though. the gnostics didn't really necessarily believe that shit about mary being jesus' wife. she was most likely just the next one... the person he was passing the torch to. look at tori's song mountain. "kiss the brave men that you thought had you protected."
Tori's explanation for the song is that in the Scarlet paradigm, scarlet is taking a taxi to chicago from which she will take another taxi to new orleans - where "taxi ride" plays in. the story goes that the driver for the ride to chicago is a gay christan man and he is the mrs.jesus referenced here. she is singing about the disonance of his existence, the history of conflict that he is living each day.
I also feel the song can be interpruted to be referring to the feminist glorification of mary magdelene and all that davinci code stuff - tori believes in it, the sacred feminine. thus, mrs.jesus. "could you ever let it be the mary of it all" - this is mary magdelene not mary mother of jesus.
People don't know much about Gnosticism, they miss Tori's references to the Gnostic gospels; I suspect that even when she "explains" what she's talking about she is dimming it down for the masses. Mrs. Jesus could be Mary Magdalene = Jesus' wife. The gospel of Mary said that Mary held the true bulk of the wisdom of Jesus' teachings. See also Gnostic texts referring to Samael or Yaldeboath, the Demiurge, who she sings to in "Original Sinsuality" on her Beekeeper album.
@meadowsleigh Agreed. Her engagement with mythos, especially christian, christian mystic, and the eastern philosophies and their discursive effects is always so beautifully wrought. It requires a bit more of a grasp of subtlety and some literacy to truly savor some of these less-accessible pieces. Basically, it's just damn good art.
@meadowsleigh But also, Mrs. jesus can symbolize the feminine of Christ, which "christians" denounce and attempt to annihilate. And i totally agree with you though. But you know, some people can be just so stupid, that this, the substance, the magic of Tori's work is... boring. In programming of celebrity culture, they'd rather talk about plastic surgery mysteries, and adolescent wishes for 'old', read young, Tori. She is a evolving Goddess and her substance will always be her might.
