This is the true Superman II! It is a shame on the producers did not let Donner and Mankiewicz finish II as it would have been an epic picture like the first film! At least the Donner Cut was released!
I don't care what anyone says but the Richard Lester version of Superman 2 is absolutely superb. One of the best films ever made. Lets not forget that before the release of the Richard Donner Version of Superman 2, which is also just as good; everyone loved and still loved it.
Richard donner's superman was my childhood favorite film the production values of krypton and the fortress especially blew my young mind,he is the only director of the series who new how to treat the material with the upmost respect and make it epic in scope, singers film, while you could see the money on the screen and routh was terrific in both roles the story never got going I guess it was the wrong film at the wrong time lets hope another rebirth is imminent with Henry cavill's take I live in
Uh I think this is the Richard Donner cut. The version in theaters gave credit to Richard Lester. This says Donner, not Lester. Both cuts, in my opinion, are both good, but Donner had better material filmed. also, Marlon Brando didn't recieve film credit in Lester's Superman II, he got it here.
Although the Richard Lester version of the film was very well-received by the critics when it was originally released, the Ken Thorne arrangement of John Williams' music was univerally panned (Williams left "Superman II" when the Salkins sacked Richard Donner), calling the Thorne arrangement with its overemphasized reverb "…a high school marching band version." Thorne should have known that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." That was the films only real "black eye."
Idk. I like both versions of Superman II. Actually I like all 3 versions cuz theres that extend for TV only version/Laser Disc version that extended scenes from Richard Lesters version. I can watch both versions. Its just different ways of telling the story.
@Sarasdad91 This is the Donner Cut. You know, the version without the shitty Ken Thorne rearranged music and the slapstick bullshit comedy a.k.a. the REAL Superman II.
@thesyfychannel15 I think your missing my point. The first Superman 2 opening that was released int the theaters had scenes of Superman the movie mixed witht he credits. This was intended to update the viewer from Superman the movie. In other words It;s like saying Last time On Superman.
@Sarasdad91 I think YOU missed the point. The reason why this video isn't called "Superman II The Richard Donner Cut - Opening Credits" is because this is the real Superman II, the version that was originally ment to be. In this version there's a pre-credits recap of Superman I ending with Zod getting released from the phantom zone by the space-born nuclear missile. As a result there's no need for scenes of the original to be inserted into the opening. Also read my top rated comment.
@thesyfychannel15 So this Superman ll pre assumes you saw the Superman movie. Okay I'll go with that. This is also the only other Recognized Superman movie, as 3 and 4 are not accepted Superman movies. That's why Returns picks up where this one left off.
@qwuezalothus Which version? I'm not picking on the Donner cut if that's your impression, nor am I picking on the Lester one. I'm just saying that Lester's version is the inferior one in every respect.
The one great travesty that the Lester/Salkind vision did to deprive the world of was the sound of a John Williams composition of a General Zod theme!
It's a fanciful wish but one thing that I do wish after seeing Richard Donner's superb vision is that Johnny would put something to that extent in his last will and give the fans some super music of what he would have done for this movie!
@qwuezalothus I disagree I loved what Ken Thorne did with Williams original score. The wonderful high camp performance of Terence Stamp alone was worth the ticket price. If you add in the great story, well I could see how you could like the first but the second one beats it hands down for me. In fact until Superman returns it was easily the best of the franchise. Brandon is brilliant as Superman. If posible, even better than Christopher.
Superman Returns is like a loveletter from Bryan Singer to Richard Donner. Singer left az the X.men-franchise and brought some castmembers with him to Superman Returns, which in reality is nothing but a copy of Donner's movies. The plot is full of holes, the positive characters are questionable in their morality, the negative ones are cartoonish, and the powers of Superman are ones again beyond believable! It's just a lame boring repeat of something the's needed to be retold/rebooted.
@qwuezalothus I agree. Singer tried too hard to copy what made Donner's Superman great without fully understanding it. The end result isn't so much as a bad movie as a boring, mediocre one. It's like Star Trek III, it had all the elements in place (story-wise) to be just as good if not better than the Donner films, but failed to use them right. It was a giant missed oportunity, and if Singer did made a sequel, this mediocre train wreck would have been salvaged.
Well a few credit mistakes on this guys! Richard Lester Directed Superman 2 NOT Richard Donner also Ken Thorne did the music score based on John Williams Composition. Susanna York starred not Marlon Brando. :)
@seanvilla710 hhehehe, NO!!! Donner WAS originally in the director's chair for about 78% of filming time, and the producers wanted Lester to take over, via Donner quit, all of Marlon Brando scenes filmed by Donner were gone, and walah behold the corny, yet sometimes alright Lester version, whereas the Donner cut was the Original Intended film, abehit some of lester's scenes had to be used in order to explain his story. This happend with the movie Legend as well. Now the DC is MUCH better!!!!!
Just watched Superman I and II (The Richard Donner Cut) in theaters. Both movies are still awesome and still hold up! The opening title sequences never get old!
With the down turn in the Superman franchise, they really ought to consider releasing a remastered version of this in theaters. I think the high quality of the direction, and the nostalgia would provide a much needed shot in the arm. Richard Donner could provide a new ending, and refine the footage that was used from screen tests. I bet it would go over well.
@MetalHeart8787 I don't even go to the cinemas anymore, i torrent all my movies, i got a huge collection of everything really haha :D Can't stand kids nowadays in cinemas eating their chicken and chips in cinemas and all it takes is 1 fucking idiot to spoil it for the rest!!
@pandagal21 i agree. it belongs on the big screen in the first place. you can just feel the power & drama. the salkinds & lester ruined everything. truly sad part of it is Brando, C. & D. Reeve aren't alive to see all this. this cut should have been released in the movie theatre. that would have been nice. when i hear this theme it makes me think of Reeve. just glad that i've gotten a chance to have met him & gotten his autgraph.****
@d4seasons I couldn't agree more. Too bad Brando and Reeves never saw the Donner version. To me Reeve is the only superman. I really hated Superman returns. The effects were great, but the casting was terrible, and that's the most important thing.
@Baxrc thanks for writing. R. Donner shot 70 % of the film & he should have been allowed to complete it. if only he & J. Williams were to continue the project we would have had a mega package like star wars , indiana jones , BATMAN , etc. this RD cut was much better & dramatic. if you look carefully @ the end where SUPERMAN finishes off those three villians & lois lane runs into SUPERMAN's arms you will see a slight difference in appearance for the both of them. ****
@d4seasons The Salkinds were more after the money with the Superman franchise rather than producing a mega-package of films. If they have stuck with Richard Donner,it would have been comparable to Star Wars,Indiana Jones,Batman and the others.Too bad that it did not happen. But at least,we got a chance to view his probable version of Superman II despite of being 25+ years too late.
This is basically the same as Superman 1, this is why Lester intro is better, its creative and different, and that S shield looks ugly honestly

No doubt the dislikes are the people involved in the Superman recrap coming in 2013.
Routh was not Reeve but he should have done sequel.
Reeve was the best and this is still the best of the franchise.

@SpiderBoy992 Here's a little task for you:
Which is the cheaper alternative when a film has been 78% shot by it's director before being forced to quit? is it:
A) have the new director finish the movie and re-shoot some of it slightly to make it more light hearted or
B) Give him a whole lot of money and have him re-shoot the movie from scratch.
The Salkinds chose B) and they were idiots for chosing that.
