lasciai che incrementasse il mio senso di tristezza...la mia allora costante algofilia da pentagramma....Forse la loro più riuscita espressione....Un capolavoro!..una viola così non la si può dimenticare...
@MrGerbilGoof Uhm... no, it's not. This is the album's most lyrically complex song, and it's an early example of avant-folk. If there ever was a filler on & Nico it would be "Femme Fatale," but I don't even feel comfortable with assigning it that label.
@MrGerbilGoof Enable for it to be a filler it would have had to have been composed specifically for the album. This was not the case. "Black Angel's Death Song" was the very song that attracted Warhol's attention at Cafe Bizarre... before they ever thought about making an album. So, not only have I explained it's one of their most artistically creative tracks on the album, but I have also proven that it was composed well before there were even thoughts of releasing an album...
This song is about a man that has all the choices of the world all set out in front of him but he can't choose which one, he doesn't want to choose just one so the black angel weeps because she know he will end his own life and not her, because epiphany's terror reduced him to shame, because he saw that he wasn't meant for this world and all the things he could choose to choose, he knew the truth, not even the heroin could dull the pain so he chose to go
@anthonyisgreener I think it's often unnecessary, at best, to try to make sense of the VU's poetry. This, to me, is the music of something like urban fragmentation.
One hundred people only bought the Velvet Underground's first album, but today everyone of them is a musical critic or plays in a rock band [Brian Eno]

Bought this finally at the age of 16 in 1979 ; what a joy ; it blows my mind with it's power and intensity.Darker than anything the brilliant Stones did and this album definitely influenced the Stones 'mark 2' with stuff like Sister Morphine and other dark songs of theirs
@Vesters1 The idiot is you.... as a 100% card burning conscientious objector hippie from high school graduation in 1967, I can testify that this album was an integral part of the psychedelic scene. There was not a hippie in sight who did not know this album. The light shows at VU concerts were every bit as tripping as at any Dead concert.
@adamwillb and... John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Mo Tucker. Nico had absolutely zero input in terms of the song composition and Lou Reed gets way too much credit for the band's sound.

The instrumentals sound a lot like My Bloody Valentine. They must have been very inspired by The Velvet Underground. Great bands, both of them.

adamwillb 3 years ago 38
@adamwillb Thank Andy Warhol for the peeling banana
Doomhead22 1 year ago
@Doomhead22 never really understood what exactly is the appeal of this banana to so many people.
In terms of inpspiration the album cover is insignificant compared to the music of the band.
But i guess it has always been cool to think and discuss with others of the genius of Andy Warhol...
Certainly a grossly overestimated eccentric...Can't really see much in his art at all.
No offense to anyone, thats just my opinion.
On the other hand, for me, this album is the BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME
