  • The great myth of the Sex Pistols is that they were untalented and random.

Steve Jones created some great riffs.

  • I agree with Immyandme. EMI IS THE SHIT

  • I hate grunge shit like sex pistols

  • @kickalion Don't say that here, if you wanna dis epic rock bands like the pistols, go find someone who gives a fuck.

  • @kickalion No one has, or ever will, care for you opinion.

The Sex Pistols are early punk from the mid 70's, grunge is a post-punk genre that started in the mid 80's.

Before you make a fool out of yourself again, do some research.

  • He knows more then me back then lol.

  • This guy may not be Jimmy Page, but he has impecable timing. He underates himself! He really made the Sex Pistols stand out from the crowd with his strong driving rhythm playing. As much of an influence in rock music as any of the great masters.

  • good God....i love this guy !!!

  • The tone of the gods . . .

  • Happy Birthday to me and the fucking legend Steve Jones :D AND Charlie Sheen.

  • the solo in anarchy is actually fucking genius

  • chuck berry, holly were steves fave guitar licks,.just speeded up

  • What amphead is he using? DSL 100?

  • I'm pretty sure it's the TSL.

  • @DJBkrabi Yes, it's a DSL 100

  • mad respect for steve jones

  • Always loved the sex pistols and always loved steve jones.

  • the pistols arejust an inpiration to me i was playing guitar for a little while thinking of giving up my mom ex punk lol told me look up the sex pistols next time you go to a cd store got the never mind the bollocks album picked up my guitar started to pick out the songs then seen a book that said sid was a huge ramones fan loved dee dee picked up the ramones first album picked out the songs now im hooked never put down my guitar listening to music 24/7 thanks to sex pistols ramones my idols :)

  • I love Steve! He'll always be my sexy pistol...

  • how much money do we owe this guy for the guitar lesson? beau coup.

  • You could pay him. I bet he would just love to teach people for free to keep his music alive...

  • he's totally amazed that they took off. like he's totally amazed that his simplicity has made him a legend.

  • Antologic RIFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • well that would be fooking right, wouldn't it.

  • his guitar goes up to 11

  • Who gives half a shit about technics? this is my guitar hero of all time. God bless him

  • did he stole that guitar from bowie??

  • @Freakmonday actually from mink ronson at a bowie show.

  • no actually he dident, that is a burny les paul witch fernandes gave him for free when he stopped using gibson in the late 90's,also the original gibson les paul was given to him by malcom mclaren who got it from sylvain sylvain of the new york dolls when they split. you can also see sylvain using it before steve in 74 on the don kirshner show on youtube

  • Oh I see now. It's hard to distinguish the two brands cuz I don't have a clear view of the headstock.

  • 3:44..

Yeah.. It still good Steve. It's still good.

  • Having grown up with the Pistols, this is fascinating.

  • the best!!! il meglio!!!

  • this always makes me smile....

  • please please please can anyone tell me how to get that sound. I have a Gibson les Paul classic. I've tried cranking the mids to about 8 or 9, treble 4-ish and bass 6 no reverb. amy suggestions would b good

  • Tune it down half a step

  • steve doesent play a half step down he plays in standard,i asked him when he on was on jj in 08

  • Yeah the pistols songs are in standard tuning

  • He certainly has done in the past. He's tuned down in this video, with the Neurotic Outsiders, and the entire 96 tour with the Pistols.

  • Also, have you tried the settings on the guitar?

I'd say 10 or 12 Gauge strings and turn the dials down a bit.

Standard tuning but down half a step.

With the Amp, I have a Marshall DFX50 and I put Gain, Treble, Contour and Bass all at mid.

Just play around with it, You'll get there eventually

  • i think you have a problem with the amp. there's no reason why you can't get that sound or even better using a les Paul and Marshall. the bloody things are MARRIED!!

    vINCE wHITe

  • oh by the way i believe he used a fender reverb not a marshall. great amps.

  • Here's the secret...and this is years of researching.....this was his exact set up when recording for "Never Mind.."

Gibson Les Paul (equipped with 490 Pickups)

    MXR M-104 Distortion Pedal

Fender 65' Twin Reverb Amplifier (loaded with Fane Crecendo Speakers)

  • he also used a gibson flying v,,im a huge jones fan ive been asking him also alot of the early gear he used.

  • Do you think he put that equipment together on purpose or was that just what he had ? I heard they stole some equipment from Bowie also.

  • True he stole equipment from Bowie. I think at the end of the day, it's just what he had. I could imagine he might've gotten the pedal on purpose since the Fender Twin can't distort like that naturally.

  • believe it or not, That is EXTREMELY useful to me. Thankyou :D

  • THANK YOU.

  • is it down to d#?

  • standad tuning if that's what you ment

  • to say you rock Jonesy is an understatement... thank you

  • but I would like to say this, I know his no Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, or Jimi Hendrix, but way I see it, he is underated as a guitar player

  • Pls dont take this as putting them down or anything, but the Sex Pistols are The Monkeys of the punk world

  • Do you mean that the modern bands evolved Punk into what it is today?

  • No, as in how everyone see them is all from Malcolm work, and the only reason that John Lydon join the band is the fact he use to hang around in the "Sex" store the Malcolm owned at the time

  • Wearing a homemade "I hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt.

Johnny said he couldn't believe it launched a career! =)

  • LOL well yea, it is that little bit of music that is well woth knowing to back up each other points, im saying this because that I did not know

  • Love it!

  • Steve jones stole his original Les paul, (not this one), off of David Bowies guitarist backstage at a concert along with some amps when the pistols were wworking as roadies

  • Yeah but did Steve but the ladys on ?

  • I think he bought this one, In the filth and the fury documentary he said he stole a les paul back stage

  • They wern't working as roadies, they wern't even together then, Steve, Paul and Wally Nightingale decided to start a band, they had no instruments so they snuck into hammersmith apollo when the roadies were setting up for the Farewell Ziggy tour, stole all the gear and cut the mics while the roadies were asleep in the front Row.

  • As for THAT guitar, it's a burny. His Gibson Les Paul has changed hands a few times but he has it back now, he has to keep quiet though because I likes to sell fakes as the real thing

  • hola!! MAESTRO!!

  • My mates dad had the original Les Paul he used, but had to sell it because he was broke...

    xx

  • oh but the original guitar was a Gibson les paul custom, but that is a burny les paul custom.... Story goes, steve jones wanted a custom edition les paul from gibson but they wouldnt make him one so he got the burny instead, apparently!! i know too much lol

  • they have a signature mod now tho

  • i heard that malcolm mclaren got it from Sylvain Sylvain when he visited the US. maybe not!... Dunno where i hesrd that lol, think i read it in a johnny rotten book, no black. no dogs, i thinks.

  • correct - the Dolls owed Mclaren and they paid him with the Gibson Les Paul Custom. Malcolm later passed it on to Jones.

But the one in the video is a burny les paul Japan copy - you can't buy this as it was individually made for Jones.

  • Burny fernandes les paul vintage white- only made for SJ. You can't buy this model.

  • lol steve stole that guitar, it used to be Sylvain Sylvains from the New York Dolls, check out the dolls video on Stranded in The Jungle, the guitar Sylvain is playing is the guitar he has, or atleast thats a rumor i heard haha

  • steve your still so wonderful

  • this make me cryn :´(

  • Tx for leaving up.

  • Steve jones maybe joins the stooges ! RIP Ron

  • he did play with the stooges lol

  • Wow. This brings me back... to Jr. High.

  • I taught myself how to play guitar by learning all the pistols tunes at school-Steve Jones always had great tone and I loved his chunky power chord riffing-not the best lead player out there(then)but that didnt matter-the songs more than made up for it!Steve is also one cool geezer!Would love to meet him and watch him play

  • 1:54 i love it =)

  • Boody Olly cud ave put some lerrics over that...u know what I mean? fooking awesome :)....

  • Steve, the greatest ever... an example to all the music world of the meaning of music and power of RnR. Tanx Steve for existing and for your wonderfull legacy. God bless you , your honesty and your music.

  • LIstening to just the sound on this, you could mistake steve for Derek and Clive LMAO!

  • I didn't occur to me until you said it. Yeah, hes going to to tell the story of how he fished lobsters out of Jane Mansfields...anatomy

  • Hey Steve Jones please make a never mind the bullocks guitar dvd!I'll buy it,as i know thousands will.Rock are a great rock guitarist.

  • I've been tryin 2 learn 'seventeen' for ages thanks 4 postin th vid ;)

  • 2:48 - THE song that made me learn guitar. I would watch this DVD segment for hours copying what he played. And I've mastered it =)

  • 1:35 -1:40 now that is some funny shit and he doesn't even say a word ! Steve Jones is one cool ass dude.

  • 3:23

    love that solo

  • great sound.

  • YES...this is the GOOD stuff !!

  • Steve is THE rock n roll guitar hero.

  • nothing as sweet as a sex pistols riff

  • what is the efect of pedal use he in this video, somebody tell me please.....//( que efecto de pedal usa para hacer estos riffs.)

  • none could be just the overdrive channal of the marshall or the ds1

  • great!

  • Thanks Brian9999 and Steve Jones

  • he s fucking great

  • Steve Jones reminds me of Kurt Cobain because he is a far better musician than he admits to being.

  • the best

  • yup, half a step down. tho with some tunes he used normal tuning. lot of people dont know that...

  • yup, half a step down. a lot of people dont know that.

  • The guy can play. And anyone who says he couldn't isn't as good as him.

  • is he using some down-tuning or something?

  • I still think that the E.M.I riff is one of the greatest riffs in rock'n'roll EVER, including Hendrix, Page and Claptout. Also E.M.I may be the first white rap number in rock history

  • does anyone know his gear? I know he has his own guitar, but witch amp and effects does he use?

  • steves gear was a '74 white les paul with single coil pickups and a 70's profile neck.

his amp was an early 70's silverface fender twin reverb (with matser volume control), with gauss guitar speakers, sadly, i don't know the specific year, and what types of tubes he used, but that's the gist of it, other than that, he used no effects pedals.

  • thanks!

  • i heard he stole the twin-amp from david bowie but i don't know if this is true!

  • Are you sure about single coils? Aren't those humbuckers in his Les Paul?

  • ya there humbuckers.

  • i'm pretty sure he used an MXR distortion. level/tone half way and distortion 3/4 are pretty good settings. and his les paul had humbuckers, and he used the bridge pickup.

  • Steve Jones is Hot.....

He might be kinda old but damm a great guitarist.

  • God he sounds so professional when he's talking. Jonesy's a real grand guitar player though, got to love him for that.

  • does he run the guitar straight into the amp or use a pedal?

  • Marshall JCM 2000 Here, I believe he used an old MXR distortion pedal for certain songs back in the day.

  • he used a 65 fender twin with mixed jensen speakers and no pedal...ive asked about that recently on myspace..he does have a real myspace even says it on his indie 103.1 show.his myspace is called jonesys jukebox

  • no straifgt into a fender twin reverb with master volume knob. i think he didn't use any pedal back in the years

  • i love the guy!!!!....master!!!

  • The axe Steve is playing was acctually stolen or bought from the N.Y. Dolls ,or so I,ve heard !!

  • it was stolen

  • He, Paul and Wally Nightingale snuck into Hammersmith apollo while the roadies for a David Bowie gig wern't around, cut the mics and stole all the gear. That isn't the guitar he stole though, that's owned by someone else now...

  • no its not i dont know where this rumor spreaded..he stole all the mics and amps and few other things...the first white les paul custom was given to him by malcom mclaren to learn guitar on as malcom got it from sylvain sylvain for a plane ticket witch he never got haha watch the new york dolls on don kirshners show on here and youll see sylvain using it all concert....and steve is still trying to buy it back from a woman in cali who malcom sold it to after the pistols split

  • What a bloke-No attitude and even runs himself

Down,almost...great songs that show how much the

The rest of the band owe him...No songs,no singer and Matlock was a great bassist,too...

  • This DVD is v good. I have to say that I personally prefer the Marshall sound after listening to Anarchy Live 77 the Twin sounds 'orrible. And lets face it 'e could use any amp he wants now and still chooses the Marshall. God bless 'is soul!!!

  • So self-effacing. The jack-the-lad exterior hides a sensitive soul. Great guitarist, many thanks.

  • he looks like a nike guy

  • he is, steve is great

  • God i wish i had lived up in denmark street, and had the pleasure of listening to this in the late 70,s

  • this video went surprisingly well...

  • i wish he'd still use fender twins instead of marshalls..marshall makes it sound close to studio recordings..i love the raw punchy sound of the 76 pistols

  • and do you know what kind of guitar is steve playing in this video??

  • hes playing a custom les paul i think -if im wrong you dont have to flip- lol but i know its custom

  • its a burny les paul by fernandes..theygave him free guitars till gibson offerd his sig model

  • it's a fernandes burny

  • les paul custom

  • there's now a steve jones gibson les paul signature ,but in this clip he's playing a fernandes burny,he should go back to using fender amps.

  • yes, i noticed a fender twin reverb in the anarchy in te uk video

  • yeah i also comment on a about 30 pistol vids sayin wished he still used the twin he stole from bowie..marshalls make his sound to close to studio,i like the original raw punchy sound the twin gives

  • Hes playing a Burny Les Paul made by Fernandes...they gave him free guitars from the late 90's to early 2000's so he stopped using gibson until about 2 yrs ago

  • He stopped using Gibson when the Pistols got back together in 1996 because they wouldn't give him any to use on tour. So he swapped to Burny's, and used them until 2003. When the Pistols reunited in 2007/08, however, he went back to using Gibson as they now (and about time!) appreciate his place in Les Paul folklore and supply him with his instruments.

  • actualy hes only used burnys in early 2000 to about 2 yrs ago...all in the 96 he used a gold gibson lp custom, sparkly blue gibson standard and a black lp custom and one cream gibson lp custom...its on the cook n jones site

  • Nice clip. And everyone said Punk is only a 3-according-systhem.!? I've don't see that by Steve...!!!YOU???

  • 3 according systhem? dont you mean 3 chords.

  • is it true he stole that guitar of mick ronson

  • He's also a fantastic kisser!!! Oh my! You might not thinks so by looking at him but, seriously...yummm! Of course that was 24 years ago but, things like that never change!

  • Anyone else think Jones has never stopped taking it personally that people thought the Sex Pistols couldn't play? He can OBVIOUSLY play.

He's one hell of an underrated musician.

  • I agree

  • He is quite underrated in comparison with Rotten and Vicious(especially the last one).

  • he didnt like sid he said so him self.

  • Seventeen sounds alot like Green Day's Sassafras Roots riff, maybe Billie copied it from them since he was Sex Pistols fan. W/e still cool.

  • you meen greenday rootsriff sounds like seventeen!! greenday sucks dude all new bands sucks best bands 60's and 70's

  • Yeah maybe if u read it,i said maybe Billie NOT STEVE copied it from Steve and the Pistols. And your comment is semi true, there are some good bands today but the majority of music is shit, most of the good music is from back in the day.

  • i know i was simply syaing the pistols first in order not green day..you have wrote what i wrote.

  • I agree.Greenday more like Duran Duran than the Pistols.

  • well said, i cant stand greenday and that cunt that sings for them in his shit eyeliner

  • that hurt...not really and to clarify i was talking about sid vicious.

  • @Idol2Idol

Green Day in the 90s played simple stuff and none wore eyeliner. They stuck to what people would normally wear. In 2004 they simply changed. The reason you hear them so much nowadays is because they're more recent music is more accepted into normal mainstream viewers.

But if you take time to listen to their 1994 record 'Dookie', you'll see how much change they've undergone. Who knows, you might not even know the songs.

  • the sound if his guitar, and the way he plays is so god damned unique. it cant be mimicked.

  • I love Steve Jones. I think he would be somebody really worth knowing. He's really underestimated compared to Rotten and Vicious.

He has been known to flog these guitars occaisionally too.

  • The Sex Pistols sound, never bettered by anyone.Nirvana tried to out do the Pistols, close but it wasn`t as good as nmtb.

  • in total agreement, nothing beats a Les Paul thru a Marshall...NOTHING!

  • And he's Playing a 'Burny' Les Paul Custom great sound and its a just a jap copy check out the Greco/Burny/Orvilles beat Gibson hands down and going up in value fast.

  • Listen to the sustain.

  • If this video wasnt here I would never be able to learn how to play anarchy in the Uk correctly

  • so rhythmic man seriously

  • Steve Jones 4 ever !!!

  • Who's the lucky bastard doing the interview? When this album came out I traded about 20 albums out of my record collection to a used record store in Berkeley to but this album. My friends thought I was f*ckin' nuts!

  • Problems. The opening riff, he must off made his own riff out of Iggy Pops tv eye.The same chord played with the open A but played another way, great tune aswell!!

  • still modest even thou he plays pretty well i cant read music nor have i received lessons practice and passion is what makes guitarists like him gr8

  • damn.its so shameful that Steve Jones isn't celebrated as a guitar legend
