This process is much easier in NJ... simply tell the nice attendant how you'll be paying, how much you want, and of what type, and wait until it's done.
My first time getting fuel in PA was interesting - my mom insists I was doing it correctly, but still the thing kept shutting off every quarter-gallon or so.
The first time I pumped gas, no gas was coming out because i didnt have it in the right way. I had to go inside to have the clerk lady show me.. it was way too embarrassing. I was 16 or 17.
