If you think that pepper spraying is bad, I've got news for you. The U.S. government is engaged in the targeted elimination and forced disappearance of U.S. citizens through the use of psychological torture that is being inflicted through multiplexed community harassment protocols as well as the use of directed energy weapons and chemical contamination of targeted environments. I am being victimized by this system of torture as we speak. This behavior is treasonous.
Good job making an absolute mockery of a disgraceful police officer that does not understand the U.S. Constitution, which he has swore and oath to protect and defend. However, both police officers and these protestors need to step back and understand how they are being manipulated through the Hegelian dialectic, where conflict is being created to pit groups against one another for the purpose of offering a predetermined solution, which is an even more massive police state.
@TheGurkenfass "Good artists borrow, great artists steal." It is a parody song slide show, nothing an avant garde, were you expecting original ideas? Not all comments are serious. Some people say they like the video.
Really? It might be up to a judge to decide what peaceful assembly means but I bet the judge will know what HOLD HOSTAGE means. In case you don't know, here it is: HOLD HOSTAGE: Any situation or leverage used to entrap or corner someone without physical restraint. And that, my UCD educated friend, is what your "peaceful" protestors decided to do when they would not let the cops leave. I say let the pepper spray fly! (oh, I still don't see camp out in the first amendment of the constitution)
@oreide1 I don't think the protesters should have sat down around the police. It was not the wisest choice. But as Dalton said in Road House, "Be nice until it is time to not be nice." I don't think it was time to not be nice yet. Reasonable crowd control means not exacerbating the situation. The police are paid to keep the peace yet they made the situation less peaceful. Being UCD educated only means that I spent thousands of dollars on a library card & that I care how my alma matter is viewed.
@robroy I congratulate you for getting your degree on your dime and the sacrifices you made to get it. Too many children today expect Mom and Dad to pay for it. You're one of the exceptions and have probably learned the value of hard work. My argument back to you is the students were warned many times what was going to happen, but they choose to remain in place. It goes back to be being held hostage. Impeding law enforcement isn't a wise choice. I respect your right to disagree.
@oreide1 Impeding law enforcement is not a wise choice but the law enforcement is there to maintain the status quo so I can see the rationale in being frustrated by police officers coming to break up what was a peaceful protest. Harboring freed slaves in 1863 was impeding law enforcement as was getting in the way Bull Connor's firehose in 1963. I'm not saying it is the moral equivalent, but college students sitting down on the grass where they each lunch should not expect to be pepper-sprayed.
@robroy In defense of law enforcement, they were told by the students they would be let go when they let the students go that were arrested a few minutes earlier. Then they circled the cops so they could not leave the area. How would you feel if a group of people who hated you circled you yelling demands? I think if they had tried to step over them then somebody would have been bumped or a finger step on. Then there would have been accusations of physical police brutality.
@oreide1 They were worried about accusations of physical police brutality so Pike casually peppered sprayed the same people he easily walked over? I understand trying to rationalize the police officer behavior. I know police work is hard because they can't make everyone happy (and the Chancellor threw them under the bus after the fact) but I think they didn't use all their resources. Power is arbitrary. Yes the protesters should have let the arrests be made and continue but now they're martyrs.
The right to assemble and peacefully protest does not include the right to put up tents or domiciles and camp out. Sorry, the original drafters of the constitution never thought that a bunch of stupid kids would leave the college classrooms their parents paid for to put up a tent on the campus lawn. Get over it.
@oreide1 UCD is a land-grant university - not a private college. It was initially funded by taxpayers. That is the point of the protests. Public universities should not be privatized. I attended UCD and, with the exception of with their tax dollars, my janitor father and lawn-mowing mother did not pay for me to be in the classroom. I paid my fees with Pell grants and student loans. And it is a up to a judge to decide what peacefully assemble means - not a cop or a youtube commenter.
@robroy Really? It might be up to a judge to decide what peaceful assembly means but I bet the judge will know what HOLD HOSTAGE means. (oh, I still don't see camp out in the first amendment of the constitution)
@robroy Oh, and by the way, I'll comment on whatever I want to. If you don't like it then make it a private channel. I'm relatively certain a judge won't look at my post to decide what the word "assembly" means. Interestingly enough, that's EXACTLY what you're doing. Your trying to make people believe your rights were violated because your ”peacefully assemble" was broke up and pepper sprayed, correct? So unless you're against free speech don't be so fast to point fingers at anyone.
@oreide1 I didn't tell you to shut-up or delete your comment. I think you have a right to voice your opinion. I just think matters of constitutional interpretation is up to judges. I don't think it is valid to assume that everyone that attends UCD is a pampered rich kid. (I lived in my car during my first year of college because I was refused financial aid and I had to chose between rent and tuition.) Even ignoring the right to assemble argument, pepper spraying in this matter is bad policy.
@XboxBadBoy18 But yet I think it was inappropriate for Officer Pike to pepper spray peaceful protesters. Those soldiers died so that in America we can be free to voice our opinions. That soldiers died after swearing to defend the Constitution. I included that picture because I thought Officer Pike's disregard for the first amendment was disrespectful to the soldiers that dies defend that right that all Americans, regardless of political side, should possess.
Not to mention that you guys seem to have lost sight of what is actually being protested for in the first place. Now you either want the chancellor fired or the police officer(s) involved fired. You are no longer protesting the tuition increases, just simply going for blood. Too many bandwagon people that don't even know what they are fighting for, unfortunately.
@SeveranceExpress Katehi told to the cops to move the protesters but claims that she instructed she "didn't want another Berkeley." Then the UCD cops went and did something that got even more negative press than the UC Berkeley cops. I went to UCD. I know the exact place this happened. The protesters were in no one's way (except the cops when they allowed themselves to be encircled, & even then, they could get through). As Pike is being thrown under the bus, he should learn to never trust power.
@robroy I find it amusing you mention that you went to UCD, cause I currently go here and have seen the protests up front and in person. They are taking up the quad, you say people have the right to camp there? Do we have the right to walk through there or spend time there? Cause barring the circumstances you currently can't. They were in the middle of the walkway that many people go through to cut through the quad...and they were told many times prior they can't set up camp and need to leave..
@SeveranceExpress When I attended UCD there was all sorts of political activity. The Davis College Republicans had a vibrant presence on campus and, while I disagreed with their politics, I was friendly with their members. A university should be a place where ideas are exchanged. If you don't like the Occupy Movement then you can ignore it or choose to counter-protest. The quad is big enough. Google "Mario Savio" and you'll see the UC has a long history of Occupy Movements.
@robroy I'm not quite sure what your point here is? You are further proving that you lost sight of what was originally being protested for. It got more negative press because of the way it was spun as the innocent protestors, when in fact they really weren't all that innocent. Both sides made mistakes..but overall the point of the protest was to combat increasing tuition fees...not to get people fired, which seems to be the current aim...
@SeveranceExpress My points are 1) Students should have the right to protest. 2) Pepper spray was excessive force. 3) The Chancellor should have handled it better and not be allowed to wash her hands of it. 4) Now the students are more galvanized than ever so the Occupy presence will last even longer. 5) This video is about the pepperspraying but, knowing people in the movement, their message is still against large tuition increases. 6) You only like one Maury Povich video, so are you a troll?
@robroy I actually don't like any videos, never hit like on that dumb video so not sure why it put that up there. No I am not a troll I just disagree with what's going on. Also, just because it happened in the past doesn't mean it's okay. Their right to camp infringes on our right to walk through there or sit down out there. NO ONE sits out on the quad now other than the occupy people, where as before it was filled with people. What gives them that right? You can protest without camping.
@SeveranceExpress Well then I agree with you that the Occupy Movement should not have a monopoly on the quad. However, I still believe they should be allowed to have a presence. I am sorry that their presence is not allowing other people to hang around the quad. Their leadership should do something about that. Of course, will the events of November 18th, now they are most likely less willing to give up an inch. This is another reason why Katehi should have handled this differently.
@robroy I guess you misunderstood me at first because I support the ideals behind the Occupy Movement. I just felt that they were/are handling it poorly and at some point they kind of lost track of what they were fighting for. I've talked to friends/other people on campus and many of them don't care too much about the tuition and such...they just want to go for blood. Obviously not all are like that but a good portion seem to be and that's where I disagree with them.
@SeveranceExpress I think they have become enraged and that clouds ones judgement. It is similar to how Pike was in the belief that everyone must comply with his demands and if a person does not comply then they deserve to physically suffer. Now protesters have martyrs and clear enemies. Katehi could have let the impending holiday diffuse the situation. What if the occupy movement made a mess of the campus over break? Then fellow students would looked down on them. But now, lines have been drawn
I find it amusing how wrong the protestors are turning out to be. You were asked multiple times, very nicely I might add to please leave. You are allowed to protest, you are not allowed to camp. You were constantly pleaded to leave and then finally the cops came. Before he pepper sprayed he went up to each protestor blocking the line and said if you don't move I will pepper spray you...you didn't move and so he did, are you really that shocked? You can only push someone's buttons so many times..
@SeveranceExpress I undertand some people believe police officers are infallible but that is not the case. They are human and sometimes they make demands that we are legally not required to follow. In Lundberg v. County of Humboldt the courts ruled that non-violent protesters should not be peppersprayed. I would ask the question, given the outrage, if it was a smart idea for the cops to excessively attempt to force compliance on this issue.
@CamperCarl00 Perhaps, having served on the undergrad electoral body and running twice for mayor, I am biased about my beloved Davis. The police serve at the will of the people. The police do not make the law but the enforce the law. You are correct in that the protesters were committing a crime but police have discretion on how to respond. The Chancellor claims she told them not to use force. Personally I think the chancellor put the cops in an impossible position, which is why she needs to go.
a ridiculous over response by a cop is now met by an even more ridiculous over response by police haters. Get a life you hippie yippe teens living in moms basement. Go get a job.
@tzotzo I do have a job. You ever heard of a hobby? I used to be a substitute teacher in Davis and some of those people "not affiliated" with the campus that the Chancellor said made her concern for UCD student safety were actually Davis high school students. Literally children sat down peacefully protesting the excessive tuition hikes that will affect their future and police responded as if regular citizens were violent criminals. Shouldn't patriotism mean respecting the constitution?
@robroy yeah no problem, but this video above is just as ridiculous and over reaction as Pike's was. My comments are directed at those producers of the video.
@tzotzo Yeah, I'm the guy that made the video. It is satire. How is it as ridiculous as pepper spraying unthreatening peacefully assembled people as they sit on the ground? Are you the type of guy that says people are being "just like Hitler" as well? It seems like a false comparison.
You know, I live in Oregon, and from my experience with occupy portland, it's not that the group is so bad, it's that you call it a peaceful process and when anyone does anything violent you say that they're no longer part of your group. They're breaking up the protest because the protesters can't keep their members under control, and when shit like burning money and turning a flag upside down starts happening, then yes, it's time you pack up and get the fuck home.
@CamperCarl00 But the same can be said for every group. The Tea Party originally were against bailouts but then their tent grew and it included people that were basically just pissed that a half-black guy was the president. Then the Tea Party people said "Oh the racists aren't with us." The chancellor complained about non-student involvement. I was a sub-teacher in Davis, I saw Davis high-schoolers sitting in that circle. Davis is a collegetown. Live in Davis and you are in the Davis community.
@robroy The problem is that most of those students probably wanted to have a legitimate reason to get out of school. That's the dilemma though with unorganized protests that it gathers people from all walks of life and not necessarily ones that are following the same cause as those of the group, especially if their cause is a very general one. With Occupy Portland as my example, even those who were considered part of the Occupy group were pushing back a police line and provoking officers.
@CamperCarl00 But the UCD Protesters were under control. All the students wanted to do was peacefully assemble. Not one cop was assaulted or threatened. Pike walked over the line of students. I cannot speak for Occupy Portland but I know there was no reason to use pepper spray. Those officers came looking for trouble. They were looking to deal with criminals, even if they had to make people criminals so they could deal with them. Students showed more self-control than the professional police.
@robroy At least he didn't whip out mace, or use a taser, or hell, he could've beat the living shit out of every single one of 'em. Police officer's are given that right when protestors fail to cooperate with the law. Peaceful protest coincides with leaving an area once your time is up, staying there any longer is in fact a crime in which discretionary force may be given out. Trust me, Pepper spray and a few nudges is the least they could do in response besides letting all of Davis go to Anarchy
Pepper spray! Because people sitting cross legged on the ground with their arms linked pose a threat and are considered violent. I have a friend who is a retired sheriff's deputy. He told me that, on average, 35% of new police cadets are macho, muscle bully types before they attend the accadamy and are therefore predisposed to using excessive force, pepper spray and tazers. In short, they like it. Pike is the epitome of a lazy fat ass pig who actually enjoys inflicting pain. Great video.
@zoomustard Because they weren't just doing that, they didn't have an issue with the protesting. The issue arose when they set up camp and stayed over night. They were asked to leave, some did others refused. The officer told them before he actually pepper sprayed that if they didn't move he will spray them. They stayed and suffered the consequences. Your blanket statement is kind of pathetic and you assume quite a lot. Shows more about your character than the cops even if he did make a mistake.
@SeveranceExpress Because he "told them" he was going to use undue and excessive force, it's OK? Does it not seem strange to you that campus police are armed like Columbian drug enforcement commandos? Pepper spray is to subdue a clear and present threat to an officer and, perhaps tazing if that fails. You're seem oblivious that free speech and assembly has been under attack here since the beginning of the Cheney regime and his "free speech zones". A reason for assembly is irrelevant.
@zoomustard I never said what he did was OKAY, but they were warned and chose to sit there. Both sides were in the wrong. Many students left when told what would happen, others didn't. I feel that there are better ways to protest, no need to camp on the quad infringing on other students/people's freedom to walk through or sit there if they choose to. No one really had an issue with the protesting...it's just when they chose to set up shop and stay there.
@SeveranceExpress While I agree with you that everyone should have access to the quad, your main issue seems to stem from the new American rallying cry, "Give me convenience or give me death." Police have to recognize that citizens peacefully assembling, and even perhaps not obeying the codes of the university, does not make them violent criminals. Just as if someone violates the UCD principles of community, it does not them a criminal per se. The admin should know how to deal with this better
lulz!

I was really shocked when he came out with his cans, shook 'em, and sprayed the kids. Some of my friends go there. Hope they didn't get sprayed.

CamperCarl00 3 months ago

SeveranceExpress 3 months ago
@SeveranceExpress Because he "told them" he was going to use undue and excessive force, it's OK? Does it not seem strange to you that campus police are armed like Columbian drug enforcement commandos? Pepper spray is to subdue a clear and present threat to an officer and, perhaps tazing if that fails. You're seem oblivious that free speech and assembly has been under attack here since the beginning of the Cheney regime and his "free speech zones". A reason for assembly is irrelevant.
zoomustard 3 months ago
@zoomustard I never said what he did was OKAY, but they were warned and chose to sit there. Both sides were in the wrong. Many students left when told what would happen, others didn't. I feel that there are better ways to protest, no need to camp on the quad infringing on other students/people's freedom to walk through or sit there if they choose to. No one really had an issue with the protesting...it's just when they chose to set up shop and stay there.
SeveranceExpress 3 months ago
@SeveranceExpress While I agree with you that everyone should have access to the quad, your main issue seems to stem from the new American rallying cry, "Give me convenience or give me death." Police have to recognize that citizens peacefully assembling, and even perhaps not obeying the codes of the university, does not make them violent criminals. Just as if someone violates the UCD principles of community, it does not them a criminal per se. The admin should know how to deal with this better
