Does anyone how to play that intro guitar riff, I wanna learn it so bad,but no matter how i try i can't get that ringinn' sound. It seems to me that mr. South used a twelve string guitar for it. Is it so or not? If anyone know anything about it, please write me back.Please. Greetings from Russia
The na-nana-na part, Joe South stole from "The Beatles - A Day In The Life" which The Beatles started to record on the 19th January 1967. Check it out in W i k i p e d i a. There's a quite long article about "A Day In The Life".
joe south challenged the conservative elements of the late 60's in Newcastle Australia. That valve fed bass still cuts a swaith through mediocrity of today. Thanks for posting. youngrascal
@joeatkinson0 You mean Deep Purple. They did this after South, not the Who. Not trying to be a know-it-all, just making sure you know the facts. Cheers, keep rockin'.
@AdKraemer Apparently Joe South wrote it for him (though I could be wrong, I've just in this past few minutes learnt about it because I love Kula Shaker's version and wanted to know more about the song), like for instance Neil Diamond wrote a few songs and The Monkees recorded them. It was quite the done thing back then, which kinda makes things confusing to be honest!
Rudikai100..his "brief" body of work was about 15 years!! He has written many, many hits for so many others....from ROSE GARDEN to Games People Play...like so many singer-songwriters..his recorded material never sold as much as those who covered his tunes. Games People Play was his biggest seller..i believe...still...such a GREAT ARTIST!!!!
Love this song, I had the opportunity of meeting Joe South, great person. He gave me an one on one concert which i enjoy very much. i can wait till i hear AVM's Hush version.
I LOVE Joe South's original version! It's a joy and honor that Joe gave his personal blessing to AVM to record 'Hush'. Joe is an amazing songwriter and a wonderful person and friend. After hearing the AVM version for the first time he said, "It made the hair stand up on the back of my neck!" God Bless you, Joe! We love ya!
This is definitely the best version of this song I think. It passed me by for years, but when I finally heard it I was blown away from the ripping guitar intro (what a sound, who played it? Joe himself?) onward.... The whole thing has every ounce of energy thrown at it by everyone in the studio and should have been a major hit. A pity it's better known by the weaker Billy Joe Royal version, and of course the Deep Purple and Kula Shaker versions too.

Joe South's body of work, even though brief, should be more than enough to get him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
His original version of this song puts Deep Purple well in the shade
Outstanding!
