As far As I am concerned, spiders in space are way cooler than finding solutions to economical or social problems, or problems like global warming. I don't care if humanity is going down the plughole, FUCK YOU, I have fucking space-spiders.
You'll be glad they spent the time and money to fund such research when your grand-kids have to evacuate the planet and actually have the means to travel in space to terraform another planet.
"In the 1970s they sent a spider up to Skylab, but didn't send food or water," she said, "then they couldn't tell if the web was built differently because of zero gravity or because the spider was dehydrated and starving."
The earth is in a world of shit at the moment with war and poverty and these jokers are wasting millions on spiders weavin webs in space. ET must be pissin in his pants
You're correct that the earth is in a world of shit. But for exactly this reason this kind of research needs to be done! This might seem a bit pointless, and it is kindof silly, but this is the groundwork for discovering how all kinds of life can be sustained in zgee for long periods of time. The long term solution to many of earth's problems are expansion.
Human population is beginning to expand well past a point of permanent sustainability while our resources and real estate remain essentially static. The only feasible long term option is to spread out, and that means understanding long term effects of zgee on life.
The world has always been in a state like that, but now with science we can get clues to how human minds work which can help because the state of the world is due to humans and observing a spider adapt in space is such a clue.
Besides, i doubt this particular experiment cost millions.
ET will be in agreement, remembering how they stopped their war and poverty by the same strategy, forstalling their species' extinction and so going on to increase their space travel tech.
Interesting video, would have been nicer had it actually had some information in it, perhaps a comparison between the normal pattern that species of spider weaves a web into under the full effect of Earth's gravity and the pattern it wove in microgravity.
Also the choice of song is atrocious. Seriously, classical compositions are public domain too and kids are not so fragile that a complex composition is going to shatter their minds.
The song is absolutely hilarious. Good idea trying to turn a silly children's song into a modernized blue note R&B mess. Makes the video kind of creepy IMO.
Our class is going to get these spiders when they come back down from Earth :)

Great comment! its true. You can see clearly that it is not a normal patern.

Other interesting points:
- the difference in web pattern of a spider born in space (i.e never exposed to full gravity) and a spider bought to space from earth.
- Also what happens to the spider if it was born in space and brought to earth.
