This is one of the most frustrating debates I've ever seen. The degree to which Hitchens' opponents miss the point is matched only by the degree to which he makes his point starkly clear.
Hitchens makes the valid point that one should use one's reason, but he lapses into unreasonableness when he asserts that since we are "half a chromosome away" from chimps, (biologically and genetically true) religion defaults to a simian exercise. Chimps use trees as their cathedrals, while men summon up Chartres, Haghia Sophia, and La Sagrada Familia. Chimps pound their chests but men make chant. (I also suspect that if Hitchen's did not have a British accent, he would have much less kick)
I don't think we're an era of fanaticism. On the contrary, we are recognizing it's fanatical, contrasted with the relatively reasonable era we are in.
And here (6:35) we see religion trying to adapt I think to modern times. Meaning, it has to adapt to nowadays standards of life and social structure, and how religions has to fit in with the political changes and it's following changes. Like, apologists will insist on texts being metaphorical and not literal interpretations.
He mentions it in a lot of his debates. Im not sure what your point is. I am catholic by birth but not in practise or in beleifs. So what is the point?
LOL not at all. Actually my intention was to point out the difference BETWEEN apples and oranges.
YOUcash espoused a point that I am making the presumption is based on hitchens being an atheist jew. I am point out here that there is a difference between being a jew by practise and being a jew by birth.
So my point is to confront YOUcash and ask him what he thinks he means by saying Hitchens is a jew. He obviously hopes to acheive something between the cultural and the faith overlap
@thetornado I wonder why that is. Perhaps it has something to do with the ease with which the Enlightenment permeated the ranks of the Scottish academy. After all, both David Hume and Adam Smith were both non-believers, or at the very most, Deists.
I am catholic by birth in the same way I am irish by birth. I was born into a catholic community, of catholic parents. To a lot of people this is enough to make you catholic. To jews it means you are always a jew whether you want to be or not. And it is to this fact that YouCash appeals to in the original comment above.

"'catholic" is not an ethnic group"
tell that the irish/scott's.
amazingjames311 3 years ago
And the Spanish and the Italians and the Columbians and the Mexicans ad infinitum. Catholic is not an ethnic group, tell it to whoever you like.

Scots are typically atheist (one of the first atheist martyrs was Scott) or presbyterian. There have been virtually NO catholic Scots since 1560.

"catholic by birth" ... What an absurd concept. Were you trying to make a hyperbole of the irony of his statement?

I agree, but it's a silly concept. I am trying to not let things like "catholic by birth" pass uncommented.
Superphilipp 3 years ago
Yes it is a silly comment. But it was intentionally silly to highlight the sillyness of YouCash claiming hitchens is jewish.
irishmauddib 3 years ago
Im 'catholic by birth' and anti religion because of reading.
HarveyBirdmanTk421 3 years ago
You're not catholic by birth, but by upbringing. That's a huge difference.
Superphilipp 3 years ago 2
I agree with Superphilipp. "Catholic" is not an ethnic group like "Jewish" is. You can't be catholic by birth. That is a ridiculous statement.
