This song was played throughout the Hot Space Tour and to an extent, on The Works Tour. The live version of Staying Power is slightly different than the album version. Morgan Fisher would take over the keyboard parts and replace the Oberheim with the Roland Jupiter 8. Taylor would replace the drum machine with acoustic drums. Also of note is that it would be the only song played live in which Deacon played rhythm guitar, as the bass was done via keyboard.
I was taken back when Hot Space came out but now listening to it, the playing was top drawer. John Deacon was funking the place up with this bass riffs
One thing about Queen they were unique they never followed other bands that is what made them great.
"Hot Space" is my least favorite Queen Album, having been a Queen fan all my life. To me, they were my Beatles. This rendition of the starting track of the album is great, far better than the studio version. Brian May adds a rock element to this kind of music. From what I understand, Brian hated this type of music. The other three had to soften him up in order to get him to go along.
"The Game" was the album before this..Songs like "Another One Bites The Dust" & "Dragon Attack" had that bass driven funkier and more dance oriented sound...
I think that this album is a bit harder to appreciate from both the listeners perspective and the musicians perspective if your' just not into genres like soul, R&B and hip-hop...
I just tanscribed this from the DVD as I typed this...It is from about 16:27/0:143:31 til about 16:53/01:43:31...
My impression as a fan and a musician is that from a fans perspective many fans preferred the edgier side of perhaps "Queen I" and the more "Prog" sound of "Queen II"...Also I am 28 yrs. old, if that helps you see my perspective better...
Hot space is of one of my favorite albums...I love this song...I am listening to it live again because at first I did not care for this version...
If you remember he mentions something about, "Most of you know we got some new sounds out...For what it's worth we're gonna do some a few songs in the funk-black category. Whatever you call it...Doesn't mean we lost our rock n roll feel...We just wanna try a few sounds..."
Hot Space is pretty cool, but it is difficult to celebrate it live. It is better to enjoy in a disco, but hell, find a f´´´íng DJ in these times who put on that record.
I'm not a huge fan of Hot Space as Queen albums go. Nor was I a great fan of the studiio version of this particular song on the album. But, by god, playing it live changes this song completely. It is a great song live. Makes you completely re-appreciate it.
They realy went to town on the performence of this song(and Back Chat) because they realised that the dico/funk album versions were a mistake and damaged there reputation.
I remember looking at a Queen album I think it was the Works record and this dude walks by and made a remark about queers buying their music....and I did buy the Album....even after my friends heard it..and became Queen fans..I only saw Queen once back in early 70"s touring with Mott the Hoople....Queen just blowed people away it was so great !!!!
Hell yes! Me to!! Look, do you any other group that uses these typical drum machine sounds and synths? I want more of this music :) Any tip would be great! Thank you!
well in the studio version of staying power there was no bass line, it was made with the synth, and so john in the live version played electric guitar since there was no bass line to play
i'm not agree whit who say that hot space was a bad album, there are melodies very very good like life is real or back chat, freddie in this album sohws a very particular voice, powerful and sweet at the same time, he is a god!
Many people think that Michael Jackson influenced "Hot Space" but it was the other way round! Jackson himself admitted that "Hot Space" influenced some things on "Thriller" (he started to record it just as Queen finished recording "Hot Space", and Freddie and Michael were big friends at the time). So "Hot Space" wasn't really half as bad as most people labeled it, it was just it was unlike anything Queen have ever done. Personally I love this album. Shows how versatile they were.
You're right. When Queen recorded this album, they were experimenting with another kind of rythms. For example, musical taste of John Deacon was different from Brian and Roger. John liked rythms like Funk. You can see that in songs like "Back Chat". Experimentation was fundamental in this album and that's what kept them alive. In my opinion, it's a great album, totally different of the other ones.
i dont really like Hot Space album, of couse i love "las palabras del amor", "under Pressure" I preffer the hard rock/symphonyc side of Queen but this live version ROCKS!!
I'm not bashing it. I was just responding to HammerToFall saying it wouldn't be weird to like it better than Wembley, seeing as his voice is in better shape.
Nice! I've only started to listen to songs from the notorious hot space. But the songs aren't half-bad! If only it wasn't Queen who put out the album, then it might not have been held in such high expectation.:P
This song live kicks the studio version in the ass. Queen On Fire Live at the Bowl is a MUST OWN. The DVD is awesome and the CD is great. This album was my album of 2004.
i used to hate this song on hot space....that was then..this is now ....i appreciate their willingness to progress !!You have to as a band or you'll sink!!!Anyways red hot song...red hot Freddie!!!!!
