what a beautiful piece of music, would love to know what the title means, have always enjoyed clannad's music but this i think has to be one of their best absolutely gorgeous easy listening
What's with the whole "I'm Irish and you're not" crap? Seriously, it's a bit elitist for you to dictate what nationality someone identifies with. Just enjoy the song.
@Thuglordrpt There seems to be confusion around this. Firstly, the "foreign" you refer to is "Gall" not "Gael". Native speakers in Donegal call the language Gaelic (Gaeilic in the dictionary). In Munster it is Gaelinn (Gaedhealing) so when a standard had to be found, the Connacht "Gaeilge" was selected and is accepted by all .This does not negate the Ulster and Munster provinces from using what comes natural to them. Many outside Ireland say " Gaelic", why do Irish people keep correcting this?
@CizzaaSkittles the oldest latin inscription in Europe as well is on a stone on the Lough Corrib/maybe the aran isles. The Irish language is a lovely song, made up of many languages. So beautiful to hear, I used to sit outside the door and listen to my Grandma and Grandpa-they would stop speaking Gaelige when I went in, so i just used to sit outside and listen to them.
"It's Gaelic not Irish" someone better tell 99% of Irish people to stop calling it Irish so....
The correct pronunciation in Irish is Gaeilge btw, Gaelic refers to a group of languages
Why try to correct people on a subject you clearly don't know about? many of us are fluent in it, we don't need a "67% Irish" yank to tell us about our own language
There are actual Irish people on the internet you know, we'll notice if you're talking bullshit lol
ok, just cause your irish doesn't mean other people cant be. im irish, your irish. for one we shouldn't be fighting, besides your 1 out of millions of irish people. im more likely friends with more (irish)people then you know people.
First of all you're location was the United States before I said anything, so quit being a little bitch and changing it to pretend you're from here, the flogging molly background and and infantile knowledge of the Irish language that has been pulled from some web page is proof enough.
Second of all I'm from Ireland so no, you don't know more Irish people than me, plastic paddys aren't Irish.
Be happy with who you are, I only said shit cause you tried to correct actual Irish people about Irish
i think id know the ground im standing on is not the united states. when i turn on the TV. and the weather comes on its about the weather in ireland and the local weather in Youghal. the reason i changed my location to a random place in the united states is because alot of people talk shit about stuff they dont know. You know what your talking about. my apologies for calling gaelic. i got the two mixed up. simple as that.
@Isthistakenn "hello I am a stereotypical neo-Irishman, I hate Irish-Americans, don't give a fuck if the real father of the War of Independence, EAMON DE VALERA himself was an Irish-American, and big Jim CONNOLLY wasn't born on the Emerald Isle either, was born in Bonnie Scotland.." You know what? instead of being an arsehole why don't you take Irish-Americans interested in their heritage under your wing and teach them something about your country???
@Isthistakenn IRELAND IS A BANKRUPT COUNTRY TODAY. YOU NEED THE TOURISM MONEY. YOUR SUMMER ECONOMY IS RELIANT UPON TOURISM, AND A BIG FEEDER OF THAT COMES FROM THE UNITED STATES. I love Ireland and I am tired of young pricks like you ruining it for the great grandsons of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and the famine who just want to visit your country and get a sense of their family's culture. If people want to claim Irish descent, let them. Typical young Irish internet toughguy eejit.
We sang this tune in music class at my American school. It was "Sweet Betsy From Pike," and it was about a woman who went west and was abandoned by her man, though I think the lyrics were edited for our song book.

Irish people speak Gaeilge and Gaelic is a general reference to Gaels so it could mean Irish , Scottish or Welsh.
CizzaaSkittles 2 years ago
yes that was the point i was making. Gael, means foreign.
Thuglordrpt 2 years ago
Actually...
" gall " means foreigner.....
" gael " is a person of Gaelic descent.
(Collins Irish Dictionary)
Simple mistake.
