  • why this sonic youth picture?

  • Someone please tell me something about Joe Crow.

  • I remember this song from the Pillows & Prayers comp & the days when 99p for an album was still a bit of a gamble (50p p/w pocket money didn't stretch far!). Joe's original version makes Martin Gore's cover sound soulless & insipid...

If this gets played at my funeral I'll be very, very pleased.

  • It is about TIME...That is the message I get from this.

  • ok, i'm an idiot... i didn't know this was written by someone other than Gore... stupidity on my part... i often wondered why i liked his cover, but wasn't drawn in by other songs... now i know; again, i'm an idiot! That being said and accepted, i give proper respects to the original! this song has been part of my life's soundtrack-- thank you!!

  • Joe Crow is my uncle, but I know him by his real name. He's has also got an album released in 2009 called 'Coincidence'. He really is awesome!!

  • Thats a perfect song, a masterpiece of songwriting. Love the lyrics and melody...Awesome.

  • And thank you so much hahahehe1000 for putting this up.

  • this is love

  • John Peel was playing this on his late night Radio 1 show, winter 1982-83. Never thought I'd get to hear it again. Thank the heavens for YouTube!

Strangely I remember it being just the same as this except the ending was different, in that it finished on a continuous B note for the last few seconds before coming to a halt.

  • HAHAHA JOE CROWE IS FUCKIN BUNK AND WACK

  • I've been looking for this on & off for years. I had it on the vinyl (picture disc) Pillows & Prayers comp way back but someone "borrowed" it.. Great to hear it again - ace!

  • Well.... A huge thanks to Martin Gore for introducing me to this song..... Brilliant.

  • Strong track from one of the most essential compilations ever released.

  • I had a dream about this song...which I have not heard in about 20 years. Glad its on here.

  • ME VOY POR LA DE MARTIN L GORE

  • subtile

  • Yay, Gerhard Richter!

  • Wonderful version of this, I'm glad I found it!

  • I love this.

  • Wow!!! Thanks for posting. This track is wonderful...

  • jep, that's for sure!

  • me gusta mas la version de Martin Gore!!!

    pero esta es buena!!!!!

  • Joe Crow's version is one of my favourite 7"s ever. So melancholy, so simple...

  • Comment removed

  • Lol :'D it's so cute and simple.

  • hmm teledysku to tu raczej nie widać Ale muza za to jest super

  • One of the most under-rated diamonds on 80's... sheer quality!

  • :o only taken me 20 years to get to hear this original version ! love it .. thanks for posting up

  • haha i was gonna write the same thing

  • great tune best thing on the sampler

  • Thats my dad. You can find links to his stuff through cherry red records. Think there's a download there too.

  • wow! you must be proud!

  • Pure class!

  • Wisdom of ages...

  • This track sorts the men from the boys. With limited technology, (correct me if I'm wrong!) possibly an old basic drum machine (Roland TR606?)and Roland TB303 bassline macine? (or something similar) quite simply, the most beautiful and moving song I have ever had the pleasure to hear. Go Joe. You're 1 in a trillion.

  • counterfeit is a six-song covers e.p. and this is the original of the song compulsion written and recorded first by JOE CROW!

  • Simply thanks for posting this poem, the original one!

    My thankfulness is endless!

  • wow, this is amazing (i also love the martin gore version)

can someone tell me from which album is this song, and the year, please?

  • It is on a sampler called "Pillows and Prayers"

  • you can find that song on M.Gore album called "counterfeit" released in 1989 by Mute records. cheers!:)

  • I know that version, but i meant the original.

  • It never ceases to amaze me how wonderful You Tube is! I keep finding the songs I love that I thought were going to be considered way too obscure.

  • Tempo bom que não volta nunca mais, escutei muito isso no Der Tempel, no Cais, que mora em SP teve oportunidade de dançar acom um som desse. Incrível.

  • Great!!! I like it so much!!

Which one software did you use to do it?

    Sounds good.

    Nice cover. Good job.

  • @DIEGOKEN242 This isn't a cover, it's the original...

  • finding the right words can be a problem dont think so

  • This is the first time I've heard the original. I like both Martin's cover and this one. Thanks for posting.

  • marvel, betweentimes i cantillate it :))

  • thatcher's britain is perfectly right. a lot of my songs at the time were a touch acerbic, albeit tangentially, about that dried up crock of inhumanity.

  • geedam

  • Got to say your taste is impeccable ... Has probably been my favourite track off 'pillows and prayers' for the past 25 plus years .... However, always thought he was singing 'Jobs in limited supply' --- always thought of this haunting track was a meditation on Thatchers Britain ..? Perhaps it's just my agit pop brain working overtime?

  • Thanks for the compliment.

    No, its not about Jobs.

Or yes, about the job we have to work on until we go.

We got to move on sometime.

By putting one foot in front of another.

  • and

    AND ITS ABOUT TIME

  • PILLOWS AND PRAYERS CHERRY RED
