I travelled to India recently on business and was interested in buying a "sitar" for my daughter to play drone with me--visited a government sponsored craft shop to do so, got this, even told Customs it was a sitar, then when I got home and was looking up how to tune the sitar strings online realized it's not a sitar at all, but a "tanpura" or, in southern India, a "tambura"--background drone instrument for Indian classical music.
