Not liking a game doesn't mean it sucks. sure FF 12 changed alot of shit but it was a good game and Dragon Quest 8 pretty much stuck to its roots. final fantasy xii gets ripped for its gambit system yeat dragon age gets praised for having the exact same thing under a different name, the voice actors for x were terrible. xii just suffered from a terrible antagonist. the people who made dragon quest 9 are from the Enix division not Square. the last great thing to come out of square enix though is the kingdom heart series.
I think its a real shame you didnt play through ff12 because, as you say, you love the ff games for their time commitments and all the sidequests and extra stuff to do. FF12 is HUGE filled with siquests and stuff to do: Get all ultimate weapons and equipments, find all the secret summons, find the super bosses and much much more. Compared to FF10, 12 is 4 times as big.
Based on, if you get everything, and i do mean EVERYTHING in FF10, you will end up spending 120-150 hours, if you do the same in FF12, you need to dedicate 350-400 hours to do so, its just that big.
So if the gambit system is what throws you off, i just want to point out that from the very first moment you start using gambits, you have to option to turn the gambits off throughout the game and play the battles like every other FF game...
Dont let this game slip Archfiend. Give it another chance and you will love it as much as FF10, i garuantere it because i shared the exact same femling as you when i first tried 12, i didnt like it so i didnt play it. A year later i found it on the shelf and i tought, well, im gonna give it another chance and you know what? I believe they did away with changing names for the narratives so they could be able to say each others names while talking to each other. Remember Yuna would only refer to Tidus as 'him'? I didn't really mind it I had my fun doin it with 7 8 and 9. Until they develop some remarkable technology that allows the characters to speak the new name you give them, I'm not trippin too much

To be honest, i think the start of FF downfall was FFX, a lot of people may not like it, but that really limited free world movement. Goofy, metro-sexual characters such as Tidus, and honestly, weak story plots. Games that where far superior where FF4,6,7,8 and 9. I pity anyone who invests time and money in RPGs. It's an overdone affair, battles are brainless and take too much time. The time of clever brainteasers in RPGs is long over - the whole attraction lies on story and characters, with games catering to pubescent idiots you can forget about it. The designs are a joke, everything is forcibly done more turgid than the last time.
RL without any sparkly, colorful effects is more exciting than this trite shit.

Hey Archfiend, if you like RPG's, you should REALLY try Earthbound. It's one of the most original games out there. Now, granted, it DOES have the auto-fight system, but the auto is so retarded, it's practically pointless unless you're grinding ;) Not to mention, if an enemy is so weak it's guaranteed to never even touch you, they instantly die :D The dialogue was so funny, I laughed my ass off. I guess it's time to stop raving about RPG's in this comment ^^

I agree with the rant about the gambit system, but what i do is i just put it on my party members, and the character im playing as (in most cases vaan) will have gambits turned off, so i don't have to worry about that shit.

IMO FFXII is a decent game,it just couldn't fullfill the build up it created.the problems I had with the game is that 90% of the time I think my party is severly underleveled and It's nearly fucking impossible to get weapons and equipment from those jars and that the rewards for the hunts are way too low.Also I didn't have high expectations of the game because I bought it for €17
@stormseye23 Don't people normally complain how games are to easy and short these days? Never played it though. FFX ruined it for me and it's all because of Tidus.
Also the hunts artificially lengthen the game and the rewards you get for crawling through a dungeon for 2 hours straight to kill that specific monster aren't worth it.
E.G. Some enemy who's location is only vaguely told without a specific clue.
The rewards are always like this:
X-amount of gil (which I could collect in 5 minutes)
a weapon or other item I could buy 10 hours of game-play ago
Some item that does god-knows-what
plus It seems my party is always 10 levels too weak
You said that FFX was the last good game Square-Enix ever made, and for the most part I agree with you, except on two games: Dragon Quest VIII and Radiata Stories. Those were exemplary games imo. Other than that, great job!
Never realised you made this video. Also, I agree, X was the best of them all. Especially the way you fought with the summons I.E You fought as them instead of just having 1 attack. I came on here expecting to hate the video, but I'm glad I was wrong. The main thing I miss from Final Fantasy is the actual RPG. It's slowly evolved from a jRPG to a soulless husk of over-hyped fan service. Mainly retaining it's sales from hopeful fans (guilty...) and newcomers who enjoy the anime-esque CG with "deep" storylines.
I don't think I'll ever understand the FF7 uber love, it's alright, but SNES FF2 is the one i drool over. I don't even remember if i beat 12, but i remember not really hating it. Awesome rant
My biggest gripe with Square Enix is doing away with the strategical turn-based combat. I'm talking about when little to nothing would happen until you decided what to do.
@wesclev83 PART of the same company. Squaresoft merged with Enix shortly after Kingdom Hearts was released. They were two separate companies both known for making some of the most popular RPGs.
Love the characters (even tho tidus was a winny baby), story, battling system especial when summoning aeons. Like 12 , ugh it pissed me off when the summons had a time limit. WTF! Why? And yeah the battling system suck, the story line bored me to sleep. Ugh it's just suck after 10. Thats what I had to say about that.

The last rumor was that Sakaguchi didn't approve of the merger so that was the motivation behind leaving. I'm not sure how factual any of this stuff is though.
It's really all hear say if you think about it since the media distorts fact and fiction all the time. So really I'm not sure if we will really know the true reason behind the actual fall of the company.
After Final Fantasy XI they made XII and that was basically still Square Enix.
In reality SquareSoft died a sad death with Final Fantasy 10 being the last game they ever made.
SquareEnix is so disgusting that they don't even take pride in their own material. Greatest hits games starting from FF8 up until FF10 are labeled as made by SquareEnix if its a Green label. The more recent copies.
I'm sure if its an older Greatest hits then it's still SquareSoft.
The reason why the present FF games suck is not because of the Squaresoft and Enix merge, but mainly because Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of FF, left SE during 2003.
Without Sakaguchi, FF will end as a rotting game. Look at X-2, XI, and XII: Sakaguchi never produced nor directed any of these games. And did they suck? Yes.
So in conclusion, I can't blame Enix for this mess. Its just the creator of FF who allowed the series to die slowly in the end.

Well my previous comments were my personal opinions.
If you kinda think about it, Hironobu Sakaguchi was basically the "heart" of the Final Fantasy body. Without the "heart", the body dies.
Now taht Sakaguchi officially left SE, the Final Fantasy series are going downhill and the body is going to rot.
I personally am going to buy Final Fantasy XIII. But this may be my last since the FF series is dying. Hopefully SE can make XIII at least something besides nothing.
Same here. Final Fantasy XIII is actually what i consider my last chance towards the company to redeem itself. I want the game to end up being pleasant,but seeing their track record I'm not gonna get my expectations to high.

Anyway other than that portion of the story, I actually did really enjoy the game and the other parts about the story like Tidus and the aeons, and how they were just dreams or souls er whatever, that was really interesting. I thought it was a good twist. The game itself was good but I didn't like how your characters really didn't have any limit to their abilities.
I probably would have really liked FF10 if I wasn't the only person on the planet who noticed that a big portion of the storyline of FF10 ripped off Chrono Trigger.
Sin = Lavos
Tidus = Magus/Janus
Jecht = Schala
Lord Seymor = Queen Zeal
Only real differences being Lavos is way scarier and more epic than Sin. Magus is waaaaay more bad ass than Tidus. Schala is a little more heart breaking for me than Jecht. And Seymor, unlike Zeal, had no real explanation or reason for becoming evil.
Seriously, Squaresoft used to make good Final Fantasy games up until FFX. After the merge into Square-Enix, the Final Fantasy games they made sucks to the bottom line, even FFXIII is just a rip off from FFVII, FVIII and FFX.

A lot of the pointers in this rant are well made man. Personally, I've loved Square-Enix's work dating back to when Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy 6 came out for the SNES, which was when I actually started getting into the franchise. I do not think Square Enix is a bad company. Because back around the time before the merger they rarely release most of their games to us (which some of their games release only in Japan meaning a majority of them could have been shit.. Now that they do people complain. The only bad thing is they do not focus on one project. Also you talked about that Final Fantasy movie I think it is the Spirits Within, which I do not think is a bad movie. Its ok.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who liked FFX. Seems all the people who played it back then hate on it and bash it today...and quite frankly, it's sad. Although, that said, IX was my favorite and still is. Believe me, I've gotten plenty of wtf looks.
Ther are some "good" ( but not es good as FF7/9/10 ) after 10 like FF7 Crisis Core ( even it is more a simpel hack and slash, but the Story is nice ) and Tactics Advance 2 ( Ok the Story sucks, but the rest was very nice and it is one of my faforit FF games ) and not to forgeht FF Disidia ( Ok im a fan of Fighting games and RPG and wenn you both in one game, just great )

To be honest, i think the start of FF downfall was FFX, a lot of people may not like it, but that really limited free world movement. Goofy, metro-sexual characters such as Tidus, and honestly, weak story plots. Games that where far superior where FF4,6,7,8 and 9. X was fun, but honestly wasn't anything compared to those titles, but I understand your hatred for Square Enix, perfect example is take a look at X and then X2. One has a story, the other is a teen pop video lol

I pity anyone who invests time and money in RPGs. It's an overdone affair, battles are brainless and take too much time. The time of clever brainteasers in RPGs is long over - the whole attraction lies on story and characters, with games catering to pubescent idiots you can forget about it. The designs are a joke, everything is forcibly done more turgid than the last time.
RL without any sparkly, colorful effects is more exciting than this trite shit.

Hey Archfiend, if you like RPG's, you should REALLY try Earthbound. It's one of the most original games out there. Now, granted, it DOES have the auto-fight system, but the auto is so retarded, it's practically pointless unless you're grinding ;) Not to mention, if an enemy is so weak it's guaranteed to never even touch you, they instantly die :D The dialogue was so funny, I laughed my ass off. I guess it's time to stop raving about RPG's in this comment ^^

I agree with the rant about the gambit system, but what i do is i just put it on my party members, and the character im playing as (in most cases vaan) will have gambits turned off, so i don't have to worry about that shit.

IMO FFXII is a decent game,it just couldn't fullfill the build up it created.the problems I had with the game is that 90% of the time I think my party is severly underleveled and It's nearly fucking impossible to get weapons and equipment from those jars and that the rewards for the hunts are way too low.Also I didn't have high expectations of the game because I bought it for €17

Also the hunts artificially lengthen the game and the rewards you get for crawling through a dungeon for 2 hours straight to kill that specific monster aren't worth it.
E.G. Some enemy who's location is only vaguely told without a specific clue.
The rewards are always like this:
X-amount of gil (which I could collect in 5 minutes)
a weapon or other item I could buy 10 hours of game-play ago
Some item that does god-knows-what
plus It seems my party is always 10 levels too weak

I came on here expecting to hate the video, but I'm glad I was wrong. The main thing I miss from Final Fantasy is the actual RPG. It's slowly evolved from a jRPG to a soulless husk of over-hyped fan service. Mainly retaining it's sales from hopeful fans (guilty...) and newcomers who enjoy the anime-esque CG with "deep" storylines.

I played x-2 and mind you it was partly lame but had nice side queests and replayability was pretty nice...

Ah i remember the last rumor.
The last rumor was that Sakaguchi didn't approve of the merger so that was the motivation behind leaving. I'm not sure how factual any of this stuff is though.
It's really all hear say if you think about it since the media distorts fact and fiction all the time. So really I'm not sure if we will really know the true reason behind the actual fall of the company.

Ya know,there is a reason that Final Fantasy COMPLETELY fucking sucks. I had just found out recently by picking up my older games.
I'm a game collector so i have all the games and their variations like (Greatest hits)
If you check an original black label edition of Final Fantasy 10 you will notice it was made by SquareSoft still.
If you pick up Final Fantasy XI for PC then you will notice that's the first chunk blowing game that SquareEnix made.

After Final Fantasy XI they made XII and that was basically still Square Enix.
In reality SquareSoft died a sad death with Final Fantasy 10 being the last game they ever made.
SquareEnix is so disgusting that they don't even take pride in their own material. Greatest hits games starting from FF8 up until FF10 are labeled as made by SquareEnix if its a Green label. The more recent copies.
I'm sure if its an older Greatest hits then it's still SquareSoft.
FF 12 is the worst RPG i ever played.

The reason why the present FF games suck is not because of the Squaresoft and Enix merge, but mainly because Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of FF, left SE during 2003.
Without Sakaguchi, FF will end as a rotting game. Look at X-2, XI, and XII: Sakaguchi never produced nor directed any of these games. And did they suck? Yes.
So in conclusion, I can't blame Enix for this mess. Its just the creator of FF who allowed the series to die slowly in the end.

I understand what your saying. Honestly,I've heard a lot of mixed rumors about the whole thing though.
I've heard the version of sakaguchi leaving,but I've also heard lots of other variations to the story though. I'm not exactly sure who specifically is at fault other then actually holding the company itself accountable for it's own failure.
I've heard the sakaguchi leaving rumor,the enix merger rumor,the squaresoft lay off/re-hire after the merger of enix rumor and another i can't remember.

Well my previous comments were my personal opinions.
If you kinda think about it, Hironobu Sakaguchi was basically the "heart" of the Final Fantasy body. Without the "heart", the body dies.
Now taht Sakaguchi officially left SE, the Final Fantasy series are going downhill and the body is going to rot.
I personally am going to buy Final Fantasy XIII. But this may be my last since the FF series is dying. Hopefully SE can make XIII at least something besides nothing.

They have to be held responsible as well.
The games aren't even mediocre. They are just so horrible that you can't help but feel like your forcing yourself to play through it to see an ending that you have a feeling will end up sucking just about as much as the entire game you suffered playing through.

Anyway other than that portion of the story, I actually did really enjoy the game and the other parts about the story like Tidus and the aeons, and how they were just dreams or souls er whatever, that was really interesting. I thought it was a good twist. The game itself was good but I didn't like how your characters really didn't have any limit to their abilities.

I probably would have really liked FF10 if I wasn't the only person on the planet who noticed that a big portion of the storyline of FF10 ripped off Chrono Trigger.
Sin = Lavos
Tidus = Magus/Janus
Jecht = Schala
Lord Seymor = Queen Zeal
Only real differences being Lavos is way scarier and more epic than Sin. Magus is waaaaay more bad ass than Tidus. Schala is a little more heart breaking for me than Jecht. And Seymor, unlike Zeal, had no real explanation or reason for becoming evil.

FF13 looks like it's going to be good because it's going back to the original active time battle combat system with just a few tweeks. Looks cool.
I just don't like how Square Enix takes so many risks when it comes to business. They bring out a game, or a new series that is mediocore and such etc. Blue Dragon for example. I was having high expectations for it, but SE is a risk taker, what can I say?

A lot of the pointers in this rant are well made man. Personally, I've loved Square-Enix's work dating back to when Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy 6 came out for the SNES, which was when I actually started getting into the franchise. I do have hopes for FF13 when it comes out next year. Also, I find it really awesome that you really like FF7 overall. Good rant bud! ^_^

I do not think Square Enix is a bad company. Because back around the time before the merger they rarely release most of their games to us (which some of their games release only in Japan meaning a majority of them could have been shit.. Now that they do people complain. The only bad thing is they do not focus on one project. Also you talked about that Final Fantasy movie I think it is the Spirits Within, which I do not think is a bad movie. Its ok.

Ther are some "good" ( but not es good as FF7/9/10 ) after 10 like FF7 Crisis Core ( even it is more a simpel hack and slash, but the Story is nice ) and Tactics Advance 2 ( Ok the Story sucks, but the rest was very nice and it is one of my faforit FF games ) and not to forgeht FF Disidia ( Ok im a fan of Fighting games and RPG and wenn you both in one game, just great )
