I live in Maine, and whenever my family goes up to our camp in the summer, we always hear loons. To be honest, they scare the dickens out of me when they come out of nowhere, but they are beautiful [:
Thats one sad loon, normally when they make this sorta sound it means they're not too happy. It's a really eerie sound early in the morning when it's still dark really eerie.
One of my earliest memories is from 1982. I heard this very same sound inside inside my grandmother's cottage in southeastern Ontario (near Madoc) while the sun was setting. The sky was orange and pink, and I remember hearing the sound. I think I was sitting on somebody's lap. Probably my mother's. And people were puttering around like it was nothing. (They're all rednecks.) But this sound still haunts me today. It is so icy, so ethereal, so forlorn.
Reminds me of algonquin park in Ontario, Canada. Loon calls are hauntingly beautiful.... lying in a sleeping bag and listening to their calls (often in combination with wolves howling) is an experience I wish everyone could share.
I remember in the old Marathon games by Bunjie (way before Halo) they used the Loon as a background noise on certain levels. It used to freak me right the Fark out!
Whenever I hear that call I always feel like the bird is destitute, like it wants something it can never have. The call is eerie and mysterious. One of my favorite things about Montana and the reason i miss it were the loons...
0:08 Ever since I was little, at my cabin that particular kind of call has always filled me with fear. They may be loons but at night they sound like ghosts on the lake.
Thank you all for the positive comments! Maine is such a beautiful place and the Loons make it even more so. Please check out my other video-Loon Call Part-2 for more!
i love the loon's call... definitely erie, yet so majestic and wild. i camped up in northeast minnesota this summer and would sit out by the fire for hours just listening to that call.. as well as all the other sounds in the night of course (including the rare and distant howling of wolves). great place to experience wildlife.. nothin too special about the physical geography but the dense boreal woods is definitely a creepy place to be at night
honestly the best place to experience wildlife is in the BC outback here in canada, random bears, although they may be dangerous still very beautiful to see, coyotes, wolves, tons of birds
some places they are so accustomed to people they will come right up to your camp [the birds at least]
even here in calgary alberta you can walk past cemetery hill and a random coyote will walk across the street... happened to me a couple times, it just stood there looked at me then went on his way
fantastic!! I love the loon calls. One of nature's most beautiful sounds. I rent a cottage at a resort here in southern Ontario, Canada. Right at sunset, the loons come out and they sound amazing.
thats why i love canada, its my home and has far better wildlife than most other countries, i live near the mountains so i tend to hear and see animals every single time i go camping, this summer on my way back through kananaskis country i saw a black bear cub just walking on the side of the road, my bf pulled over and drove really slow so i could hang out the window and get a really good pic of it
wow that sounds awesome. You said you live in the mountains? Whereabouts? I've always wanted to take a trip out west and see the great plains and the rockies. I live in Brampton, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto...so we don't have much of a natural atmosphere around...but a quick 2 hour drive north or northeast, basically anywhere along the shores of the great lakes...its a totally different world...great scenery, nature, and beaches...and that's where I spend most of my summers.
i went on a outward bound trip in the north of ontario, it was beutifull and there was a buntch of them. If you like camping its defenitly a nice place to go (we where on the missisgi river)
My dad and i use to go to Maine fishing and always hear them that was about 27 years ago oh how i wish i could bring them back....I love and miss you dad....SONNY
When I spent a month in Alaska I heard two talking for hours.. A bald eagle flew nearby and they started making a different noise though.. more unjulating(sp?). It's the sound you hear most often in music that "has loons". This is their calm signal, the other one is when they're threatened.
Aaaahh... I hear this at my house near a lake in Quebec, best song to fall asleep to!

So beautiful... This gives me shivers down my back and tears in my eyes. I long to visit such a place one day and hear this bird for myself.
