Hi! My name's Lexi (: I'm the chick singer in the band Silk n' Suede that performed Forplay/ Long Time. I just wanted to say thank you so much for sticking up for me. I agree that wasn't the best song for my voice, but it's nice to hear someone tell off that guy that pointed out my shitty vocals. (: by the way, great piano skills! You're the man.
Dude.... thank you for showing me the way. lol. i Actually just started playing the keys, been a guitar player most my life. But i'm currently learning this song for my band and it's giving me a hard time. any tips? I have most the notation down but it's the speed that kills.
Dude.... thank you for showing me the way. lol. i Actually just started playing the keys, been a guitar player most my life. But i'm currently learning this song for my band and it's giving me a hard time. any tips? I have most the notation down but it's the speed that kills.
@Hodgkins91 well first of all, to be honest if you just started playing the keys then this song is probably too hard for you.
for tips, i would recommend general good keyboard form: like guitar, you want as much economy of motion as possible. practice the fingering carefully and make sure it's as efficient as possible, and keep your wrist and hand level; let the fingers do the work. keep your fingers on the keys at all times, even when not playing. hope that helped, good luck :)
teehee, heard a mistake :) G# SHOULD be G, only because "foreplay" is in the dorian mode. other than that, you are golden. and 100x better than i ever will be.
@uninspiredml hey, thanks for the compliment. i have to disagree , the note used throughout the song is Gb. while you are theoretically correct about the dorian mode, this song doesn't follow music theory exactly. Luckily many people write songs based on harmonic enjoyment and not on rote observation of music theory "rules", otherwise we would never have creativity in songwriting. It's a Gb. :) Listen to the record and see for yourself. The Gb plays a pivotal role in the main theme.
@uninspiredml haha, thanks. well, from my experience it can be a blessing or a curse working with a musician that can read. often a musician really good at reading music can't play without it or has poor improv or groove. i will say it's really handy for communication purposes if everyone in a band knows at least a little music theory....i'm lucky enough to be at a level where i can play with guys that (mostly) are both musically educated AND have groove and do things by ear. do you play out?
@zachpiano well, i actually play guitar, im not too savvy on the keys. i took a couple theory classes, and try to stay as knowledgeable with notation as possible, and i did get lucky enough to study classical guitar for a couple years, which is why i prefer fingers to a pick. but i do almost all of my stuff by ear. my friend and i sometimes do performances where we just have a set chord progressions and take turns improv-ing.
@uninspiredml that's cool. yea, i saw your van halen vid, that was very cool. i also do everything by ear. it's pretty much mandatory if you want to make a living playing music to have a really good ear, in my experience.
@zachpiano god oh god, that's not my cover, although i can play the piece. my profile thing must have been set to show "favorites", that is embarrassing..
i suppose i should probably post my own cover of eruption now to compensate.
Outstanding! This of course is one of many excellent Boston tunes and I have no doubt after hearing this that you probably wouldn't have much trouble doing pretty much anything! I hear you are a Kansas fan? How about doing "The Spider"?There are many excellent keyboard songs by Kansas also and I'd like to hear you do some of those. I'm going to go check out your band now!
thanks so much dude! i am planning to do many kansas covers, and of course the spider is on my list ;) i will check out your site, and excellent to hear of another kansas fan. i am a fucking diehard, they are almost all i listen to and i am terrified to hear that kerry livgren might die. i would love for you to check out niterail's site, we have an album out (although i wasn't in the band for that one) and another is in the works. thanks for the comments! kansas forever
Already done my friend. Your band is excellent! I'm a retired drummer and I had my hey-day back in the 80's.We put out an album and I've posted 8 songs so far on my channel. It was called Arsen. Just mostly plain old commercial dance rock!Seeing the vids of your band and listening to your samples brings back the urge! I'm sure you know what I'm talking about! The thing that satisfies it is playing and in front of an audience is the best!
:) thanks vance! i had a lot of fun with it. i'm having a lot of requests for sheet music so I'm going to be doing that...hopefully more people can enjoy playing it then. wonderful work on your recent videos, me and my brother really enjoy them. there's something about a harmonious combination of human voices that really resonates musically...maybe it's because it comes from our bodies and not some other source, so we feel a greater connection to it.
You figured all that out by ear?!? Great talent Zach, sounds just like the record I used to listen to back in the early 80's :) I posted an allegro to a sonata on my channel you might enjoy. Keep playing!
Hey Zach! Thanks for getting back to me. I actually already have the entire Foreplay/Longtime organ track all sequenced out and we've been rehearsing with it for a few weeks. I re-sang all the vocals in my studio just for fun and it sounds awesome so we may actually do a recording of it too! Thanks again man and let me know if you'd be interested in creating/recording some other tracks. You've got great feel... it'd be a blast to play along to you!
Amazing performance! Is there any way I can get you to play that without the drums and guitar? I play in a power-trio who does a lot of really awesome songs you'd never see three guys perform. I want to do Foreplay/Longtime including the intro but play all of our parts. We would be playing to your recording of the organ solo. Brad was a voice unlike any other and the 1st Boston record was groundbreaking. Again... fantastic performance!
i apologize man i forgot to reply to this. i will do my best to get this to you, unfortunately i may not longer have the original file :( let me know how the performance goes!!!! send me your email via pm so i can send it to you if i find it!
thank you so much! wow what an honor to be names after a boston song. good luck with learning it! some hints: there is a lot of triads...and repeated licks that transpose. so figure out the chords underneath it, then it will be easier...hope it helps ;)
awesome job man, i love this song, and you pretty much nailed it.
this is a minor thing, the part your playing on your left hand 23 seconds into the song, this is just what im hearing, it sounds like you play a g-flat instead of a g.
What voices did you use on the keyboard? Thats always the hardest part. Finding what voices sound like the actual song. Do you know of any websites that can help find these voices?
i don't think websites exist for that, and if they did, i don't think it would help you. the only way to learn how to replicate is to listen carefully and experiment. for this song i miced my keyboard amp, so the sound you're hearing is completely generated using live patches. I believe I used a custom B-3 organ tone, basically a tweaked version of "rocker spin", a pretty beefy and slightly distorted patch. then i added some slight reverb and chorus effect. hope that helps!
Hmmm... It looks fine in Preview on my Mac. Maybe you could try using a different PDF reader. If it doesn't work in Adobe Reader perhaps try Foxit Reader.
hey dude! to answer your questions, yes, i arranged an audio track in advance and played along with it. also i did not switch to piano, i cheated and put it in the audio track ;) i could have done it with a two keyboard stack, but i thought that would get in the way of being able to see my playing. good luck learning this one, it is a "bitch" ;)
good stuff zach, used to play intro to bloody well right back in the early 80's (try learning it off an LP !!), also minute by minute intro by the doobies. hey, maybe check out my original tunes. btw, your left hand chords on bloody well right is short a note, but you probably know that. :)
Unreal... GREAT! Are you missing a note in the very beginning though? The thumb should move to a G I think (F/G/F/G/Etc). It couldn't get much tighter than that though--IMPRESSIVE! VERY!
you know what man...you are absolutely right, i did miss a note in the beginning...i can't believed i overlooked that one. damn! good ear. i should have picked that one up. thanx alot for the message. what do you play?
The 5 people who disliked this prove to me that people can actually be tone deaf. Awesome job bro.
