Its pretty obvious 2jzz410 didn't know who Riche Flores was. Just let me tell you if you didn't know....... I'll make it simple, if your really a musician then you should know who Eddie Palmieri is. Every one of his musicians over the last half century are top notch and regarded as the best of the best! Riche happens to be one of those. This was just a demonstration of speed of hands. RIche has played all over the world and is one of the most humble people you could ever meet.
Some pretty harsh comments here, but mostly good, and rightfully so. Richie is a GREAT conguero! His speed is awesome, and he DOES have musicality. It's not just his speed, but how easy he makes it look. And for him, I guess it is! Great stuff, man!
I think Richie Flores is super talented and I admire his unique technique.......We are just lucky to have two of the most talented tumba players around...............Lets celebrate the richness of the music and the diferences in style rather than coming here wasting bandwith with all this negativism. It is OK to prefer one or the other; try to enjoy the music more and worry less about convincing others of your opinions or tastes, it will make for a better world.
Music is an expression........Do not forget that..........
Richie Flores has blinding speed with his hands; he knows that and he has created his personal style based around his
speed, exploiting it to the max.......Once he was asked in an interview, who he thought was the best tumbador, and he replied: Giovanni Hidalgo, why? Because he is the most complete; he does everything well.........I could not agree more.... Comparing tumba players is like comparing singers; it is what you like,
i find richies solos to be unique- they take congas playing into places no one else goes- to advance u must take risks - he never plays it safe - dont get me wrong he can swing a band with a solid back beat as good as anybody (like alot of other players) but when he solos its electric- there is something exciting seeing someone play to the edge of there ability- especially when your one of the best in the world- thats whats makes him great- and that what makes him different-
You really must have no life or be a frustrated musician to worry about what I think. It's my opinion. Oh wait. I'm sorry I must have forgotten the internet is serious business. And, your opinion and words while you sit behind your little screen and attack me make me laugh. Typical internet tough guy. LMAO! But that's cool. Richie is fast as hell but speed is not the be all end all of being a percussionist or musician for that matter. Cool for the first 20 seconds then just boring.
Stop the inderect comments towards Richi Flores and just enjoy his playing...you quickly compare him to Giovanni Hidalgo and say Richie is Horrible but I dont see any videos of you guys playing any instruments on here with your names on it. Meanwhile, Richi and Giovanni will get together for a live jam and enjoy the heck out of it, while you guys here keep with the dumb remarks....Enjoy it for what it is. There is no "right or wrong" way of playing congas...Every Style is different !
there might not be "right or wrong" but when there is no flow, it should raise some critique. why not use technique to ENHANCE a groove and not ABANDON it by falling into a spiralling, horrible display of non-musical rudiments... I'm all for developing technique but this is ridiculous. AND this is not the worst I've seen hiim play. I've seen Richie play enough times to say it has nothing but rudiments behind it. It's simply boring and tasteless.
I think Richie is real good, the thing is we see him and we think wow he is fast just like Giovanni. But he is no Giovanni but his techniques with his fast hands qualify him as one of the best.
i am more of a tradicinal conguero but ican see the musicianship in this solo.you can argue that he's playing fast just to be a show off but in my opinion i think this is really the style that suits him. think about it, he would probaly bore himself to death if he played slow knowing he is capable of superspeed. if you listen carefully he is telling a story in this solo,it's just so fast he is almost breaking the sound barrier.
usually when i hear people putting guys down about speed is cause they have non!!! I think Richie has his style.. He just happens to express himself in a fast way... If you guys can not except that than keep your comments to yourself. Anybody who puts down Richie has to be Stupid or Jealous, Mario Monaco NYC
Yes, i agree...Richie got his own thing and it works for him. I like his sound even if it might be overbearing for some musicians. I also do notice motivic development and polyrythmic vocabulary in his solos. And no, I do not think it is circus act.
Yea , incredible , sometimes I wish these type of congueros will use their chops in amore musical way instead of a competition to see who is faster. No offense but It looks to me more like a circus approach than music. Chuchubesi
Realize that a conga solo is not unlike a set solo, and I've heard set players who use their solos to show how fast they can play...but chuchubesi, I agree with ya, man--anyone can play fast, but the really talented drummers, congueros and bongoseros make their drums sing...
If you're playin' so fast you're knockin' your congas over, that's too fast, IMHO...
I mean do not take wrong, nothing worng with playing fast as long as musical instead of a bunch of notes that to me do not say any thing bro,.. I prefer you tell me an story on your solo and developed to something. You know , after Giovany there are so many cheap imitation and people do not play who they are , they just trying to compete and music is not about competition , is an art.

if there was an Olympics of conga playing...
The need for speed is a human nature so there's no fault here especially since there's musicality in it.
Some people totally sacrifice musical ideas for technique and that's a danger.
Keep it musical folks! (Or you'd better have really dazzling technique to keep us entertained for a while.)
