I can't wait to live to see the day when human beings aren't So Judgmental... Celine has her own style in which she's appreciated by MANY! Her (CD Sales / Savings Account) could probably prove that! She's singing here in perfect pitch ALL within her OWN Style! "Ms. Janis Ian" I believe would be flattered that ANYONE would sing her song (In Their Own Style) Try LISTENING TO THE WORDS / MELODY???
oh good lord! perfect example of someone with a good voice sounding terrible simply because she puts no feeling what so ever into what she is singing. Its funny to hear her sing this song anyways.
@JasmineAlaya Are you kidding me? Céline is one of the most emotive singers there is. She puts her soul into nearly everything she sings. We have to be watching something different, because it seems to me that she means every word of this. Even the sigh at the end tells how deep this song is to her and how much she's relating to it.
I must agree with some of the below comments. As much as I love Celine's amazing voice, this is not the song for her. All of the meaning and connectedness to the words is gone and it really does just sound like background music.
I allmost never react on a youtube post bus this really freaks me out. No interpretation, no feeling i'ts like putting a coin in a jukebox...Celine is a good singer in her own genre but please don't try to touch material like this...
I agree with infinera06, Janis Ian should have been asked to perform her own song but I suspect as superficial and shallow as the Grammy morons are, they opted to go with appeal and looks to boost their ratings.kind of a joke isn't it especially seeing what message the song is conveying
@infinera06 Well Celine wanted to sing this song as it means a lot to her - you may not know this, but her childhood wasn't easy because kids made fun of her and felt like she was so out of place. The original version will always be the best one, but all in all Celine did a very good job with it.
@MongoTheLloyd HA HA! I laugh back at you! Go back to masterbating to videos of that washed out Janis Ian. You obviously know nothing about Celine's career. And this will be the last reply you get to your sorry excuse of an argument...
@mannycampas Go back to 3rd grade spelling class, which by the read of it, you failed. I know enough about it to know there is a reason she is COPYING better people than herself, like Ian, down to the very vocal inflections used by Ian. When you have little inherent talent, like Dion has, you NEED to copy from genius. If Dion had an ounce of talent in her, she would be writing ALL of her own songs, throughout her entire career... like Ian. Dion has a talent dificiency dosorder.
@MongoTheLloyd Celine doesnt create anything!? Since 2003 she has controled her career, the songs she sings, how her "A New Day..." and now "Celine" vegas shows looked and the songs in it. She also had control over her "Taking Chances World Tour". And if you say shes not an "artist" for not writing songs, she has written songs for other French singers. And she sang the song the same because unlike some singers she doesnt ruin the song by completely changing it...
@mannycampas WHAT?? She controlled her career? She controls the songs she sings? She controlled a tour??
Pardon me while I laugh at you. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Good Christ. I needed that laugh. If these "amazing" "achievements" are considered "creations" by you, no wonder you like Dion. I put you in the same category as the other rocket scientist who attends an Ivy League school.
Ever thought of being a comedian? Think about it!! Perhaps you too can control your own career!!!
@killrblu haha wow! You really need to do your research before you post things, cause then you look stupid! Celine was mocked as a teenager because of her looks and her teeth. And some people still make fun of her. So the song fits her,
@mannycampas No. The song doesn't fit her. As stated, Celine merely COPIED Janis Ian. Not by singing her song, but by singing her song with the same vocal inflections... and apparently selling this copy to fools like yourself, with a pity-me story. Free clue: "artists" (and I use that term loosely since Dion doesn't really create anything, she just mocks what she hears, like a chimp) do not need to sell their songs with pity-me stories. Dion is a con-job. She fools the audience into liking her.
Janis Ian set such a high standard with the original, this is more a humble tribute to that, staying true to the tone and feel of it. Great Job Celine
After she finishes, she looks worried about the reaction she'll get, but when the audience warmly applauds she is relieved
never thought I'd say it, but....boring. Celine made it boring. so appropriate for celine to sing this. at the end, the looks in her face looking at the crowd means "i was an ugly duck too, look where I am now, I cant believe it".
Celine was an ugly duck who made it to the TOP OF THE WORLD. end of discussion
@expos73 It's not that I dont like her version; I can appreciate it, being a musician myself, I just prefer the original myself... it hits the heartstrings in a more unique way.
@warriordog1 Not to be nasty --but you should get your facts straight. Janis Ian won the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a female for this song. She also was the first musical guest on the debut show of Saturday Night Live on October 11th 1975 and performed this song. What's a year anyways..........at my age maybe a lot LOL
@700kotchi I was off by one year, easily explained away by my multitasking and an easy typo. My main point being the impression seemed to be that everyone thought Celine Dion wrote the song based on the comment thread. At least you (and hopefully many others) know that she was only singing Janis' song.
she needs to let Janis Ian sing this song who is the original singer/songwriter of this song Celine knows nothing of awkwardness. She's one of those shes singing about! Someone please SHUT HER UP!
@killrblu The original version is amazing, that's the thing with covers - it's hard to do a cover and not be compared to the original singer. Actually Celine knows about awkwardness as kids made fun of her when she was a kid - and I think this song quite describes what she went through back then. Celine did an amazing job on my opinion. She's my favorite singer but I think Janis Joplin was a fantastic singer as well.
@killrblu Janis Ian loved celine's rendition, check out what janis said on her message board :) actually celine was heavily derided for her looks as a teen by her classmates and the press and even later into her career she's still now constantly made fun of for her looks, although I think she looks pretty here in this performance.
I guess she is laughing all the way to the bank at all those people who made fun of her when she was in school, they are all probably fat, divorced, broke or in an unhappy marriage good for all of those looser, sing on Celine
@dleet101 wow this is Janis Ian's song, she is just covering, and I'm sorry I love Celine, but this was not a good cover. Janis voice, and they way she sings it takes you to that place! You ponder over being seventeen and having to endure bullies at school. This was Janis's real life which is why she could write it and sing it as she did.
@dleet101 Its a Janis Ian song... and a poor Celine Dion cover... down to the same way Ian articulates some of the lyrics. It isn't a cover. It's a BAD copy. Wait. You simultaneously cheer Dion for (not) overcoming the prejudices of youth, while farting out those same prejudices (fat, divorced, broke, etc). Clearly, you didn't get the message of the copied song. Not too surprising, since it was performed with ZERO emotional attachment.
@pathetic321 Her voice has changed during the years.. so she still hits very high notes but it sounds a bit different. And by "different" I mean still good!.. Nothing to compare with Whitney and Mariah now.. If you wanna hear an example, search for "It's A Men's World" from her last tour. =)
@pathetic321 : Mariah Still can hit those high notes now, if you look at her performance on ABC Christmas special. Celine is talented, but still not as good as Mariah.
@pengpengjulian umm i was highly disappointed when i saw mariah carey sing about 1 year ago she was not good at all it sounded like her voice was just wasted and had nothing left. So i don't think Mariah is better than Celine because everyone is still asking Celine to perform
@brayanm787 "Everyone" is still asking Celine to perform? I am not asking her to perform. I only know of one actual human who likes (liked) her, and that woman led a sheltered life. Like you, she wasn't too bright, and her musical tastes were limited as a result. I know many people who like Janis Ian, who actually has talent, plays guitar well, and writes fantastic songs. Celine? She simply sings.... she sucks off of others, and uses cheesy (velveeta) fake emotional tripe to win the audience
@brayanm787 It's ok. You do not need to apologize for not being as bright. Perhaps if'n you work real hard, you might be one day! Really? You go to an Ivy League school? you can't figure out where I got the idea you aren't bright? Hmm. Read your post. Clue 1: "Everyone is still asking Celine to perform". Clue 2: Vegas is where artists go to die because they can't book nationally any longer Clue 3: I never accused you of bringing up Ian. Clue 4: Who cares about Mariah?
@brayanm787 In summary, I could't care less how your educational resume' reads. Clearly, it isn't working. If that Ivy League school manages to issue you a degree, return it and slap the headmaster. Few people, let alone "EVERYONE" asks Celine to perform copies written by real singer-songwriters. Just as your education cannot help you figure out why "EVERYONE" isn't you and a handful of other feebs, I am positive that it won't help you realize Dion's insult to Ian, copying her vocal inflections
@brayanm787 In conclusion... Janis Ian has more talent in her little finger than any Celine Dion. Janis is a singer-songwriter. She doesn't imitate others and copy music. Janis, and most other popular artists can have a Vegas show if they wanted it. Most don't want it. Most do not consider "art" to be doing the same canned, processed, sterile show, 5-6 days a week, twice a day... for months or years... playing to old, fat retired women in moo-moos who desperately need a good cry.
@brayanm787 One last note. Another clue as to the fact that you aren't as bright as you think you are. Regarding your "I'm smart, I go to Ivy League.... yada yada yada"... George W. Bush went to an Ivy League school (Yale) and he was and remains a spittle-slinging moron.
@MongoTheLloyd That has nothing to do with the Price of tea in China.. I am nothing like George Bush.. He is a moron... and I am sorry who are you exactly to say that I'm not bright.... learn to stay on the subject of Mariah Carey and not bring Janis Ian... I am smart .... I'm sorry what school did you go to?... Please!!! get on my level of education...
@MongoTheLloyd Oh! Might I ask why do you hate Celine so much? Because she is more successful than you will EVER be.... Your probably a couch potato doing nothing with your life hating someone so fantastic.
@timsaxstanfield Celine Dion is not blonde, check out her singing Avec Toi in 1985 when she was 17 and you'll know that she can totally sing this song
There's nothing haughty about saying a person is offensive and stupid. That's just stating the truth. You can see that because others here also said you're offensive and rude so it isn't just me. Now use your little brain and try to figure out which statement you wrote that would offend people. Then look at the responses from people to that statement. By that time you should have figured it out. Unless you're really dense.
@parachuteboi dude I did click reply so I did exactly what you said I should do. And trust me I'm not putting words in your mouth. It was your comment that was the rude and classless one. You're not a good southern boy. Someopne good wouldn't have written such garbage. What's funny is I'm talking about something I and others answered by saying it was rude. If you can't figure out which one it is you obviously post many rude or insulting comments. Grow up boi.
@parachuteboi - DON'T bother yourself with this dipshit. I've TOLD this idiot how to use the reply function; he's just too old and dumb to figure it out. And of COURSE, I find the fag here, finger-wagging his way into someone else's posts, LMAO. "You're mean!" "You're a bad person!" "I didn't like what you typed here!" YUCK!! This douchebag passes judgment on everyone else but himself.
You made a mistake trolling my channel page, lasktguy. As I see, you still have lessons to learn.
have you seen tape of celine when she was younger..she was and probably felt like the ugly duckling when growing up . like fine wine she has aged and become more beautiful....and i love this version of the song
ok, we all know she has a beautiful voice, but does she really HAVE to re-do all of these classics ... some things are better left untouched. We ALL know how GREAT you are, Celine, come up with your own originals and leave some fame for the less known.
@gje96fcb why the fuck am i sad and pathetic?? all i did was state my own opinion, it has nothing to do with you so why should you fucking care?! YOU'RE the one whos sad and pathetic here. wow. what an idiot.....
Love this song. Reminds me of my sister, who passed away from cancer a few years ago. She loved this song, and I remember her listening to it when I was a child. She was never a "beauty queen", but one o fthe most wonderful human beings to walk this earth. this is for you, Sis.
So is she really singing this? Or is it a feed-back thing from a computer. I guess the speakers are under her hair. Maybe she is tired now from hooking up with that older [by 32 yr s] man thing she likes!
@VALMARIESASK you are disgusting and sad. shes in love and having a great life (and singing live) and you are being bitter and hateful and probably single and lonely. pathetic.
@soulconnection2010 Hi, Celine was asked to choose and perform one song from the Grammy Hall of Fame to sing on a pre-Grammy Awards tv special 12/08. She's talked in the past about not being comfortable with her looks from childhood on up. That would explain her choice of songs, I guess. On her website, I seem to remember Janis Ian giving Celine her best wishes and compliments. I agree, its a moving rendition. But then it's Celine.... incredibly gifted, humble, respectful and generous.
It seems strange for her to sing this song. She doesn't seem like one of the ones with ravaged faces lacking in the social graces desperately remaining at home inventing lovers on the phone.
I find it amusing that people assume all sorts of things about her because of how she looks now. She's admitted on interviews that she was teased often at school for her pointy teeth, her gawkiness. She was called ugly, vampire teeth, etc. Even to this day there are people out there who think she is ugly and looks like a horse. Why? She possesses a classical beauty and old world elegance that most people don't have.
People's perceptions are colored by their prejudice or preconceived notions
@gje96fcb yes but she spends that because she is insecure about her appearance and was often made fun of for it when she was 17. That's why this song means much to her and why she sings it so well
@gje96fcb you do realize she was younger once and came from a very poor upbringing. she was mocked for her looks as a kid so its perfect that she sing this song.
@atolm1 it would be if she didnt blend in with all other popular female singers and try to be famous for her looks. the woman who wrote this really felt it, however celine dion did not.
@gje96fcb youre either attractive or youre not. she is famous for her voice not because of her looks. Shania, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce those are beautiful women. Celine is all about her voice. Of course she wants to look her best, dont we all? But she still isnt beautiful but her voice is amazing. Why you getting all upset about it? Thank Celine for covering this song and bringing it to a whole new generation. I had never heard this song and im glad i did cause i love it.
@atolm1 take your head out of your butt dear.. life is not black or white. saying that you are attractive or not is not too intelligent and you did not put much thoughts into it. sit and think and you might realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@cboncklis did you read the initial comment i responded to? consider the source comment, it didnt give me much to work with as far as a response. i realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder but there are people that you cant argue are physically beautiful (such as the ones i previously mentioned) and Celine is not one of them. She is not famous because of her looks but because of her talent is what im trying to say whereas someone like J Lopez is famous because of looks not talent.
@atolm1 its sad that u found out about this song thru celine dion instead of janis ian, im 13 and i discovered the original. celine dion should not have covered it, her version is stupid and shallow
@gje96fcb I didnt know who Janis was and would never know unless Celine covered the song or some other artist I like covered it. As such if you are really a fan of Janis and the song you should be glad she has spread awareness of a great song and artist by covering it. I have since looked up the original version and love it as well all thanks to Celine covering it. How her version is shallow and stupid considering its very close to the original makes no sense. Sorry shes not ugly enough for you.
@gje96fcb Janis Ian is from MY generation and Celine did not made a shallow covering of this song. Celine was ridiculed by people and the press about her looks here in Quebec when she was younger.. So the song does hit home for her and she did feel it. You are 13 and you don't know much! You sound snobish with your comment more than anything else.
@gje96fcb How sad you think only the young and ignorant hang out here on the 'tube. I absolutely loved this song when Janis first released it, and Celine does a decent job here of covering it...and I know for certain BOTH of them dealt with the ugly duckling syndrome when they grew up, as a great many other famous beauties did.
@gje96fcb There's only one of me, and it's only arguing if you choose to treat it that way. I am disagreeing with and correcting your statements. I'm going on 49 years old and routinely surf the tube and even post videos I make myself....so suggesting no one of Janis Ian's era frequents this site is simply not true.
@jwramc i apologize, I have never met someone who is 49 and actually comments on youtube videos, sorry for discriminating
But although I am 13, I have spent a lot of time making myself familiar to all kinds of music, modern and older, and in my opinion this is a shallow cover and anyone who is singing at the grammys should not sing this beautiful folk song that was not intended for these audiences, and Janis probably doesn't like it either. It will also cause people to think the songs by dion.
@gje96fcb you can't tell if in this kind of audience, as you say, there isn't a girl or boy who felt the song. Céline was not a cheerleader, in fact she was quite ugly, and she never wanted to go to school as she didn't feel part of her class. She was constantly teased not only by her classmates but also by the journalists for her look. I didn't know the song before célien sang it, just like many others, so I am grateful céline introduced a lot of people to this beautiful song.
24 people don't remember what it's like to be 17.

At least you (and hopefully many others) know that she was only singing Janis' song.

she needs to let Janis Ian sing this song who is the original singer/songwriter of this song Celine knows nothing of awkwardness. She's one of those shes singing about! Someone please SHUT HER UP!
killrblu 1 year ago
@killrblu The original version is amazing, that's the thing with covers - it's hard to do a cover and not be compared to the original singer. Actually Celine knows about awkwardness as kids made fun of her when she was a kid - and I think this song quite describes what she went through back then. Celine did an amazing job on my opinion. She's my favorite singer but I think Janis Joplin was a fantastic singer as well.
IlariaCeline 1 year ago 2
@IlariaCeline Janis Joplin was, indeed a special musician, however, it was Janis ian who brought this our originally (and also wrote it...)
thetinman2000 1 year ago
@thetinman2000 Yes that's correct. Janis Ian's version will always be the best version ever, it's simply stunning!!
IlariaCeline 1 year ago
@killrblu Janis Ian loved celine's rendition, check out what janis said on her message board :) actually celine was heavily derided for her looks as a teen by her classmates and the press and even later into her career she's still now constantly made fun of for her looks, although I think she looks pretty here in this performance.

ummm it's not her song. Was wrote by Janis Ian and her big hit.
bobbypayne38 10 months ago 2
@dleet101 wow this is Janis Ian's song, she is just covering, and I'm sorry I love Celine, but this was not a good cover. Janis voice, and they way she sings it takes you to that place! You ponder over being seventeen and having to endure bullies at school. This was Janis's real life which is why she could write it and sing it as she did.
cammicty 5 months ago
@dleet101 Its a Janis Ian song... and a poor Celine Dion cover... down to the same way Ian articulates some of the lyrics. It isn't a cover. It's a BAD copy. Wait. You simultaneously cheer Dion for (not) overcoming the prejudices of youth, while farting out those same prejudices (fat, divorced, broke, etc). Clearly, you didn't get the message of the copied song. Not too surprising, since it was performed with ZERO emotional attachment.

@pengpengjulian umm i was highly disappointed when i saw mariah carey sing about 1 year ago she was not good at all it sounded like her voice was just wasted and had nothing left. So i don't think Mariah is better than Celine because everyone is still asking Celine to perform
brayanm787 5 months ago

Clue 4: Who cares about Mariah?
cont'd
MongoTheLloyd 4 months ago
@brayanm787 In summary, I could't care less how your educational resume' reads. Clearly, it isn't working. If that Ivy League school manages to issue you a degree, return it and slap the headmaster. Few people, let alone "EVERYONE" asks Celine to perform copies written by real singer-songwriters. Just as your education cannot help you figure out why "EVERYONE" isn't you and a handful of other feebs, I am positive that it won't help you realize Dion's insult to Ian, copying her vocal inflections
MongoTheLloyd 4 months ago
@brayanm787 In conclusion... Janis Ian has more talent in her little finger than any Celine Dion. Janis is a singer-songwriter. She doesn't imitate others and copy music. Janis, and most other popular artists can have a Vegas show if they wanted it. Most don't want it. Most do not consider "art" to be doing the same canned, processed, sterile show, 5-6 days a week, twice a day... for months or years... playing to old, fat retired women in moo-moos who desperately need a good cry.
Now. go cry.
MongoTheLloyd 4 months ago
@brayanm787 One last note. Another clue as to the fact that you aren't as bright as you think you are. Regarding your "I'm smart, I go to Ivy League.... yada yada yada"... George W. Bush went to an Ivy League school (Yale) and he was and remains a spittle-slinging moron.
Game. Set. Match.
MongoTheLloyd 4 months ago
@MongoTheLloyd That has nothing to do with the Price of tea in China.. I am nothing like George Bush.. He is a moron... and I am sorry who are you exactly to say that I'm not bright.... learn to stay on the subject of Mariah Carey and not bring Janis Ian... I am smart .... I'm sorry what school did you go to?... Please!!! get on my level of education...
brayanm787 4 months ago

There's nothing haughty about saying a person is offensive and stupid. That's just stating the truth. You can see that because others here also said you're offensive and rude so it isn't just me. Now use your little brain and try to figure out which statement you wrote that would offend people. Then look at the responses from people to that statement. By that time you should have figured it out. Unless you're really dense.

Just to ask why was she performing this at The Grammy's ? I love Janis, but this is a moving rendition
soulconnection2010 1 year ago

People's perceptions are colored by their prejudice or preconceived notions

isn't it ironic that someone who probably spends tens of thousands of dollars on her appearance would sing this song?
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb yes but she spends that because she is insecure about her appearance and was often made fun of for it when she was 17. That's why this song means much to her and why she sings it so well
capitalpulse 1 year ago
@capitalpulse if she didnt care about her appearance now so much, i wud agree. but she is as shallow and materialistic as all female singers
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb you do realize she was younger once and came from a very poor upbringing. she was mocked for her looks as a kid so its perfect that she sing this song.
atolm1 1 year ago
@atolm1 it would be if she didnt blend in with all other popular female singers and try to be famous for her looks. the woman who wrote this really felt it, however celine dion did not.
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb youre either attractive or youre not. she is famous for her voice not because of her looks. Shania, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce those are beautiful women. Celine is all about her voice. Of course she wants to look her best, dont we all? But she still isnt beautiful but her voice is amazing. Why you getting all upset about it? Thank Celine for covering this song and bringing it to a whole new generation. I had never heard this song and im glad i did cause i love it.
atolm1 1 year ago
@atolm1 take your head out of your butt dear.. life is not black or white. saying that you are attractive or not is not too intelligent and you did not put much thoughts into it. sit and think and you might realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
cboncklis 1 year ago
@cboncklis did you read the initial comment i responded to? consider the source comment, it didnt give me much to work with as far as a response. i realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder but there are people that you cant argue are physically beautiful (such as the ones i previously mentioned) and Celine is not one of them. She is not famous because of her looks but because of her talent is what im trying to say whereas someone like J Lopez is famous because of looks not talent.
atolm1 1 year ago
@atolm1 its sad that u found out about this song thru celine dion instead of janis ian, im 13 and i discovered the original. celine dion should not have covered it, her version is stupid and shallow
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb Stupid and shallow how?
vgsdstny 1 year ago
@vgsdstny the original has real meaning, she was the real thing, an actual folk singer. celine dion is a celebrity singing at the grammys.
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb I didnt know who Janis was and would never know unless Celine covered the song or some other artist I like covered it. As such if you are really a fan of Janis and the song you should be glad she has spread awareness of a great song and artist by covering it. I have since looked up the original version and love it as well all thanks to Celine covering it. How her version is shallow and stupid considering its very close to the original makes no sense. Sorry shes not ugly enough for you.
atolm1 1 year ago
@gje96fcb Janis Ian is from MY generation and Celine did not made a shallow covering of this song. Celine was ridiculed by people and the press about her looks here in Quebec when she was younger.. So the song does hit home for her and she did feel it. You are 13 and you don't know much! You sound snobish with your comment more than anything else.

@gje96fcb How sad you think only the young and ignorant hang out here on the 'tube. I absolutely loved this song when Janis first released it, and Celine does a decent job here of covering it...and I know for certain BOTH of them dealt with the ugly duckling syndrome when they grew up, as a great many other famous beauties did.
jwramc 1 year ago
@jwramc im confused, am i arguing with both of u?
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb There's only one of me, and it's only arguing if you choose to treat it that way. I am disagreeing with and correcting your statements. I'm going on 49 years old and routinely surf the tube and even post videos I make myself....so suggesting no one of Janis Ian's era frequents this site is simply not true.
jwramc 1 year ago
@jwramc i apologize, I have never met someone who is 49 and actually comments on youtube videos, sorry for discriminating
But although I am 13, I have spent a lot of time making myself familiar to all kinds of music, modern and older, and in my opinion this is a shallow cover and anyone who is singing at the grammys should not sing this beautiful folk song that was not intended for these audiences, and Janis probably doesn't like it either. It will also cause people to think the songs by dion.
gje96fcb 1 year ago
@gje96fcb you can't tell if in this kind of audience, as you say, there isn't a girl or boy who felt the song. Céline was not a cheerleader, in fact she was quite ugly, and she never wanted to go to school as she didn't feel part of her class. She was constantly teased not only by her classmates but also by the journalists for her look. I didn't know the song before célien sang it, just like many others, so I am grateful céline introduced a lot of people to this beautiful song.
unison89 1 year ago
@unison89 That's not the point. Janis Ian was a down-to-earth, real folk singer while Celine Dion is a mainstream pop artist singing at the grammys.
