A cappella, with perfect pitch while seated. She made this look easy. Yes Bob, Joan can sing better than you can or ever could. Yes Bob, she can also sing your own songs better than you can. And she can even write great songs, too! She probable could have juggled while singing this song, she was that good and still is.
Well the vibrato is no longer part of her voice, range or intention. Treat yourself to listening to her newest release Day After Tomorrow if you want to hear where this amazing voice has matured to.. and in fact it has done so without this (gorgeous!) vibrato.
If you can't get with the voice at this perioud you probably don't want to hear Issac Stern playing the violin, either.
this kind of comment usually comes from someone who knows music intellectually instead of musically. I'm sure it's not nearly as good as it sounds. ;)
ROSEBERRY26-7/22/08-I have always loved Joan Baez, her voice sounds like an angel's should sound. "For All we Know" ; I have never heard that video but it is wonderful. Her politics and great sense of justice is great too. I got her autograph and shook her hand but I was so nervous! She is also very beautiful. She always evokes strong emotions. My favorite for 35 years!
Thank you. I've been looking for this song for years. And while I can't remember what I did last week I can still remember all these words !Not as brilliant as I remember, but at least it exists!
Also, does anyone know if Joan ever labeled herself as left or right? I haven't read her biography yet but she doesn't strike me as the type to be aligned with a major political party since, like someone said, she got slammed by both.
I checked out that video on myspace, thanks for telling me about that. It was okay. Joan sounded great but all those strings made it almost unbearable.
She was untrained until 79 which is when this was recorded. She had amazing pipes but was starting to lose some of her upper range at that time so she finally sought formal training. Her singing took on a new power, but unfortunaltely she basically blew off therecord industry for 7 years, right AFTER the lessons started,so none of the "new" voice is documented very well on her studio recordings. Her live performances at this time were stunning!
MS Baez also sang "Time Rag", did a nice interview with guest host, Betty White, (don't recall where Merv Griffin was), and proudly displayed her latest book "And Then I Wrote." Joan's performance was prasied by the other lady guests, like Shirley Jones.
Well, if you call working courageously to end a war even the political and military leaders of the time have admitted was a mistake...speaking and marching against oppression, torture and death by dictators and fascist governments...supporting and bringing attention to the displaced, starving and homeless...if this is "lousy politics"...then, by God, it's MY lousy politics too! Brava Joan!
Still lousy politics...way tooooo left-winged for me, like Nancy Pelosi and you know the rest. These people would probably want to negotiate with the murderous scum terrorists like Osama. Right???????
Ahhhh, come on Jerry, you don't really believe that nonsense do you? The neo-con media machine isn't that good at leading the willfully ignorant....is it? Well, maybe so. Too bad.
I still think Ms Baez has a beautiful voice, but like I said....you know the rest. The main problem is that liberals, mOST Democrats etc are still living in pre 9/11 times and belittle the threats to our national security today.
bush is the threat to our security. read the CIA reports. Terrorism is nourished by war and hate. And there's no way to stop terrorism militarily. Time for diplomacy and less of the USA ( that means ME too) exploiting the rest of the world. PEACE
I take your comments to mean we should negotiate with the terrorist states of Iran and Syria...come on , give me a break!! These thug governments support, finance, and spread hate & terrorism around the world. To them diplomacy is one way-their way. In addition they desire that Israel be wiped off the map, deny the Holocaust, and much more! G-D bless George Bush!!!
Bush's war has caused millions of deaths/injuries/homeless. No terrorist has come close too the Bush totals. Bush diplomacy in Iraq was to go in shooting against the advice of the UN and Europe, and look at the mess he's caused. But his pig friends have feed at the war money trough.
Jerry, I wish these issues were so simple. Yes, the actions and statements of some leaders in Iran, and other states are ugly and hateful, but if we can be honest about our own complicity in some of the ugliest regimes (Pinochet, et al) we supported, then we might be more credible as a standard for true liberty and freedom in the world. We have been lied to by our own gov., and when we ignore these facts and want to only view history through a 'USA above all others' prism, we share that blame.
You make some valid points, John, but we are living in a new world now-post 9/11 and very scary at that. Just trust the Republicans now who seem to recogonize these threats to our national security better than the Dems. A case in point , of course, is the Clinton Admin in the early 1990s who reactly so meekly to Al Quaida scum after they attempted to bring down the Twin Towers in'93. They knew where Bin Ladin was then but refused to take him out. .
Jerry, you seem to forget, or maybe you weren't around; Clinton sent in a strike against where Bin Ladin was at the time and caught hell from everyone for doing it. Do some reading.

Before you lump Joan Baez in with the restd of the showbiz "left-wing liberals", do know that she also took a lot of hits from the left, when she blasted Hanoi for its treatment of their political prisoners in the late '70s (around the time this clip was filmed). The Human Rights group she founded, Humanitas, went after right AND left wing dictatorships. She once commented "repression is repression", regardless of the politics involved.
If you think anyone would want to negotiate with terrorists is pretty naive Jerry. I'm a Republican but can't stand the scare tactics you and idiot Bush forces on the American people. "Be scared because those other people will be soft on terrorist and try to negotiate"
My exact point, no leader of ours will negotiate with terrorists. My point is the Bush adminstration forces on the American people that any other leaders would do so to scare the weak minded people in America.
Yes! those Military leaders weren't stickin their necks out with the Truth. Protesting against the war was MUCH more controversial then than now. Major Courage, just ask Bob Dylan(or read his autobiography)and see how scared he was to come out against the war.
She was the first musician to tour the South requiring integrated venues. She persuaded Carter to rescue the boat people. She has campaigned agressively against Commie torture in Hanoi, Russia, Poland, and Czechoslavakia.
She delivered 1000s of letters to POWs when the US was bombing it's own POWS. She sang at farmworkers funerals for Cesar Cahvez. She sang at Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk and Polly Klaus's funeral. What a disgrace!
Thanks for the reminder of who the real heroine is, and has always been. The one who speaks, marches, sings and has gone to jail for those most vulnerable...no matter the politics!

I agree that this is from 1979 and the fact that JB had recently taken her first formal vocal lessons (after the recorded version) is gloriously evident. What range, clarity and soulfulness! She also perfomed this from her chair on the Tonight Show (Bill Cosby hosting)around the same time.
I remember reading that Shirley Jones once said something to the effect that an acapella version of For All We Know done by JB on a talk show was the single most impressive display of talent and art she had ever been in the presence of. That's quite a statement, given Ms. Jones' history in the theatre. This must have been that show.
And Shirley is a big republican so she must have been impressed! Is that really a true story. The early 60s really loved the Diva sopranos: Julie Andrews, Shirley Jones, Marni Nixon and JB. They sold billions of records combined. Nowadays none of the current canaries dare try to sing (even if they could)in that legitimate soprano range.
I can't tell you when or where, but I do remember hearing it, so I assume it's a true story. I can only imagine what it sounded like to Shirley on that sofa. You can hear the audio on this get a bit blurry when Joan's voice hits that pure pure pitch, tone and intensity. I guess the equipment couldn't handle it. I've always wondered what Joan sounds like to herself in the shower.
