@TyZi187 The picture may not be very sharp, but it could very well be a water pump. It´s not like you said "in the middle of the street" but on the sidewalk. And we are talking about the year 1838. There wasn´t a water system in every house like today, so many people had to go to public water pumps or fountains to get fresh water. In many old european towns you can still see some of these fountains, they are not just there for decoration. Most of the pumps have just been removed.

There are actually loads of people in that second photo, the reason they don't show up is due to the picture taking minutes to actually be fully taken. The two at the bottom show up because they we're there for the entire duration of that time. You may also notice light on all sides of the first picture, this is because the picture actually took a full day to be taken and all of the light is being generated by the sun :)

Wow. You should learn more about Irish history. I have loads of books, which I'm currently reading, about the 800 year struggle. It's funny though, that even though Britain has such a long history with Ireland, they learn almost nothing about our struggle when they're in school. Although, they did have a lot of other bigger colonies. I'm gonna get myself a copy of a GCSE history textbook to see what they do learn.

Thanks for mentioning a lil bit about Ireland :) Im Irish and actually, to be honest I don't think that many people died BECAUSE of the famine, i mean there was other food, but it was being shipped to England. England didn't like us... :L they didn't treat us fairly. the children were taught at school that the Irish were dirty, poor, animal-like creatures. The only reason we were starving was because of them. I have nothing against the English now, though.

@shadowthehh2 for a good chunk of them, yes, pretty much. recalling that poverty in past centuries was much more widespread, they probably did hear of other foods, but couldn't afford much more. it became popular enough that the poor and farmers mostly lived on it, with a third of potatoes going to livestock, and its popularity probably gave it some significant standing in the economy. imagining what happens when disease pulls all of that out from under them, it makes sense.

The first pic ever uploaded on the net was not those women. When I was in High School (9th grade) 1984, a magazine called "K-POWER" gave some of us modems (measured in baud rate, I believe) and we chatted, shared files. etc.
